I am having an issue with Drake's where the entire screen will just go completely black for about a second (maybe less) at totally random intervals during gameplay and even once during a cut scene. This black screen will last the exact same amount of time each time and it almost seems like the game is loading but I can't be sure.

I haven't had my PS3 for very long and Drake's is really the only game thus far that I have played extensively so I am not sure if another game will do it but I intend to find out.

I am currently on chapter 5 but I have been experiencing the problem all game long.

Could this be an HDMI issue or do you think that it is just the game? Anybody else notice this?

Thanks!

That is what I'm guessing is the issue, HDMI connection problem.

Just got done playing Ratchet and the GT HD demo / game without any black screen issues. Must be the Uncharted game and not the HDMI connection. Also, I have no XMB problems.

Also, I went back and played the Uncharted demo and I noticed it doing the black screen once when you first come to the big waterfall.

Couple of possible easy fixes (though you may have already tried these):

-Double-check your PS3's video settings. Make sure they match your set-up.

-Try different disc-based games (not demos on your HDD).

-Reinitiate your PS3's video settings (turn off the system. Then hold down the power button until it beeps a second time. ~5-10 secs).

-Try a different HDMI port on your TV or AVR. It could be a bad or finicky port.

-Try a different HDMI cable.

-Delete Uncharted game data (not your save game data!). I'm not sure if Uncharted has any, but it's worth checking. Probably won't do anything, but who knows?

-If you're not already forcing a particular resolution, try forcing different resolutions and see what happens.

I had some controller freezing issues which I haven't had since I played Resistance last which was months ago. R&C had no freeze ups nor did any other game. Generally controller freeze ups have to do with Blue tooth. This happened later in the game after say ch 15. Great game but it does feel a slight bit, very slightly buggy.

I've finished the game once, and I'm about 1/3rd of the way through a second time.

I've seen the black screens he's talking about--but only right before cutscenes. I understood it as the game loading for a second. No big deal, really.

Considering that's about the only instance of the game having any discernible loading, I didn't worry about it. It certainly didn't reduce my enjoyment of this amazing game in the least.

@bassmonkee -

I agree that the black screens don't affect the enjoyment of the game as a whole. TBH, I actually love this game! I went ahead and tested a different HDMI port, reinitialized the video settings, etc. and played some more Ratchet. It has to be the game loading or something to that effect. Also, it seemed to happen more on Chapter 4. Chapter 5 hasn't been as frequent.

bassmonkee - do you have the 40 gig? I do...just curious. Thanks.

No, I have a 60GB from January.

Glad to hear that it isn't affecting the enjoyment of the game for you.

It really is a great game, and the rumble is great, too.

Agreed bassmonkeee! Great game and great rumble! Sony needs to get the Dualshock 3 out to every market sooner than later.

Agreed again!

As for glitches/problems with the game, I have not had a single one.

you've never been stuck? I've been stuck exploring at least 3times where I had to replay from last checkpoint. I'm on my second play through on hard with 10 treasures left to find. Stuck aside, this is still a 10/10. Excellent game.

I played through one full time on hard without any "black loading screen." I did have one lock-up, but otherwise flawless. Playing on the NTSC 60gig.

I wouldn't call it a loading screen at all as it is more of just a black screen "flash". It's like the game is loading data in the background with these quick little flashes that cause the screen to blank, or go black, for that time.

The amount of time would be comparable to that of the blink of the eye. I realize it seems trivial and I guess some people may not even notice it but it was bothering me. And no I am not on any hallucinogens or under the influence while playing ;)

Mainly, I was just curious if anyone else has the same discerning eye as myself. This is by no means a deal-breaker for the game. If anyone is on the fence about this game please do not let this thread dissuade you from purchasing! :)

Normally, if I see an oddity in a game I will ask others if they have noticed the same thing happening.

Check and make sure your disc is clean, could be it's a little dirty and the ps3 is having a slight delay while trying to stream off of the BD...

The system and my games are as pristine as can be. I have also tried a different HDMI slot, video reset, etc...all of the suggestions that have been made in the thread but to no avail. Also, as I stated earlier Ratchet does not exhibit the same "black screen flash" nor does any movie playback which would rule out the HDMI handshake being the problem.

It would awesome if Naughty Dog came out and said that it is their method of loading data since you never see any loading screens in the game. Does anybody have a ND contact? I wouldn't mind asking them.

I've seen the blank screens... I think it's just loading a new scene or between cut scenes. It's not really a bother for me. Only noticed a few times.

Are you using 1080i via component?

Are you sure this isn't tearing?

I haven't seen any random screen blanking, but I have had the game lock up on me twice -- once in chapter 4, and once in chapter 18 or 19.

I made it to chapter 20. Then I decided to start over, and accidentally started to overwrite the save file:eek:
Naturally I pressed the PS button and select "Quit Game" hoping to save my file.

No luck.

The next time I played, it would load no further than the menu, just a black screen after selecting start new game (since mine was lost in the overwrite).

Kept changing setting, erasing save files etc. Nothing worked. ****.

Uncharted does not show any "install" data in the XMB, but apparently, there is some.

I copied all my saves to an SD card and did a quick format of the hdd.

Bingo. Uncharted works, and I get to play again from the start:D
