I've seen some older threads, but with the newer firmware on the PS3, it now can upconvert to the same resolutions as the 981HD. Has anyone compared these two for SD DVDs? I've seen the Oppo and it produces great results, but have yet to find out if the PS3 compares to PQ or not. Any thoughts?

My PS3 replaced my Oppo 981 in my AV rack. I couldnt tell the difference between the two. Plus the fact that the PS3 does just about all the things the 981 does, and Bluray. Only down side is you MUST have an HDMI AVR for SACD multi Ch. But it sure does cut down on the cable clutter.

I don't want to hijack but I was about to start a similar thread for my oppo 971H unit. I'm guessing the 971 is similar to the 981 anyway.

FWIW, I do know that my oppo upscales divx MUCH MUCH better than streaming divx with tversity, but I have no idea if the picture is being butchered by tversity or by the PS3 scaling. I think it might be the PS3, because when I tell the ps3 to output the original resolution, the picture is small, but looks pretty clear.

In any event, even if the upconverting of SD DVDs is the same on both units, I'm keeping my oppo around simply because it can play divx directly and with much higher PQ.

DIVX streaming with tversity sucks. It sucks on the 360 too. Never had much luck with making it look half way decent.

i moved the 971 upstairs after the firmware. 24 season 5 looked slightly better on the ps3 after the firmware so the oppo got demoted to the family room, but is still amazing at 42" and maybe moreso than it was at 110". the [british] Office looked better on the polaroid with the oppo than it did on the z4.

i think you'll be surprised by the ps3.

the funny thing is that before the firmware, dvd's were totally unwatchable and even made my wife groan about the horid pq!

Funny enough I have seen my friend's ps3 upconvert an SD DVD, but not my own. I was, in fact, impressed with the upconversion. I have been meaning to do a side-by-side comparison to the oppo.

In any event, as soon as the firmware is released with divx support, I suspect my oppo will be demoted to free up an HDMI port.

I just did a side by side comparison with MI:3, and I have to say, as much as I love the Oppo, the PS3 looked better! The picture was far more vivid, with colors bursting out of the screen. I thought nothing could beat the Oppo, but maybe it's time to sell it and just stick with the PS3...

Whatever one you prefer the look of. Most people seem to not be able to tell a difference or give the slight edge to PS3.

I have an Oppo 970HD and moved it to the plasma in the bedroom when I got the PS3. I think the Oppo's upconversion was a little better than the PS3's, but not so much as to continue to use a non-upconverting player in the bedroom or to buy another upconverting player for that screen. I'm quite happy with the PS3 as my SD-DVD, BD, and streaming video (from a NAS with UPnP) player in the living room.

1.8 added upconversion.

And you will obviously have to use an HDMI cable for upconversion.

I bought the Oppo a month before I decided to pick up a PS3.

The PS3 does a terrific job in my living room and the Oppo now sits in my bedroom.

I find there are a lot of Divx files that my Oppo will play but the PS3 won't.
So I still have both in my entertainment center.

Until my NTSC PS3 can play PAL discs, my Oppo will remain.

But, I think the PS3 does a better job upconverting, both with DVDs and DivX.
