View Full Version : NEC XG LC Green tube Life?
Hi,
knowing that the nec xg lc's are hard on the green tube, what is the average hours time of a green tube before burn etc?.
Thanks
Ryan
Curt Palme 11-27-07, 04:40 PM I've seen 8000 hour XG85s in here with the phosphor use maxed out with some wear but with a completely viewable image.
I've seen other XGs with 3200 hours on them set up slightly further back than the recommended NEC manual, and they are toast.
So I don't know for sure whether the P16 tubes wear any faster than the Barco/Marquee tubes with the thicker glass, I think it's more to do with the setup and use.
Mark_A_W 11-27-07, 08:41 PM Somewhere between 300 and 5000 IMO.
It depends where you call it. I had an Xtra which had just visible wear when I maxed the raster at 4000hrs - very unusual IMO. At 4500 hrs it was still fine by most standards - the guy I sold it to was ecstatic. But I was starting to think about a new tube, as uniformity was starting to suffer.
Is that a sign that the green gun is going out? I'm still really enjoying the CRT, but this occasional flickering where the white turns yellow pops up every once in awhile now. For years I've been running the projector at 1600x865 onto a 1.85:1 Stewart screen, and I think it's got about 2500 hours on it. I drive the projector through my HTPC and use custom timings with power-strip to calibrate the video card to 1600x865 at 72Hz. The occasional calibration is a pain and it's a little noisy, but I've been hesitant to move to the new 1.77:1 "widescreen" projectors as I'll then have black bars on the left and right, and I really like the look of a CRT for movies. If this flickering sounds like a bad tube, does anyone have tips on where I could get a replacement?
Gary Murrell 07-21-08, 01:44 AM I am doing a 2.40:1 sized raster on my 1352LC, contrast on 46, at about 5k hours I am starting to get some wear, about a 7.5/8 on the scale

White going to yellow is a problem with the blue. If it still goes back to white then its not a wear problem. For some reason you occasionally loose the blue. This could be something in the projector or a source problem. Depending how often it flickers, it maybe hard to locate, but if you want to rule out a source problem then switch the green and blue input connectors on the projector. Now when you run the projector the colors will look funny but when it flickers, instead of a yellow white you may get a strong purple. Have you tried another device besides your PC to see if it still does it?

Oliver Klohs 07-23-08, 02:23 AM It does not matter how much phosphor is used when the contrast is above 60 and the internal settings left untouched.
There will be wear after a few thousand hours - the tube is just driven that hard.
A little wear is not that bad though and in the end if wenever get it we also do not get proper light output out of our projectors in most situations. So I would not worry too much and just enjoy the ride and then replace after 4000 to 8000 hours to give an estimate.
@Gary: That is one reason why I would like a small screen: It can be driven so easily.
5000 hours with only very little wear sounds great !

Mark_A_W 07-23-08, 02:44 AM Crikey 5000 hours??!! In 3 years or so?
I got my XG about the same time and I'm up to 260 hours now. Two hundred and Sixty -I checked last night.
Gary's must have been on about 5 hours a day, everyday. Gary, go outside and play!! You need the Vitamin D!

Mark,
while Gary might be overdoing it a little I have to tell you that it is OK to have your projector running more than 2 hours per week ;)

Mark_A_W 07-23-08, 08:21 AM I just don't find the time..I only use it to watch Movies, and I don't watch TV really at all anymore.
I do have the contrast up quite high...when I use it I bloody well use it :)

If your tubes are toast after 2000 hours that still should give you another two decades of use :D

I beta test, do hardware/software reviews and show it to family friends, along with enjoying it on my own time, adds up pretty quick
I am outside alot shooting my Glocks nearly every day :p

Mark_A_W 08-01-08, 11:01 PM That should be illegal.
Why do you want to play with things designed to kill people?
