Hey,

Need some help. My sister and her family moved to England from the US and have a huge collection of US DVD's. They also have a bunch of International DVD bought while traveling through Asia.

For Christmas I want to send her a DVD player that will play her NTSC US DVD's and any they others they buy while abroad. Can someone help me understand what will work? I'm a little confused after searching on this, but so far think that the Oppo's would fit the bill? I want to get them something nice and HD would be great as well.

Her TV is a Sony Bravia KDL-S40A12U. It appears it is a 720P LCD 1366 x 768 with NTSC, PAL, and SECAM tuners. It has HDMI, Component, and SCART Sockets??

Any advice would help, as I really don't know a lot about the differences between US systems and Europe.

Thanks!

Any Oppo would work so would any HD DVD player, she would only need a plug converter.
The only caveat is the HD DVD player couldn't play PAL DVD's.

There are many really cheap DVD players available in the UK that will play R1 (US) and R2 (UK) discs. I'm assuming they will be getting a PAL TV of course. Here's one

Cambridge Audio also makes several DVD players that can serve the purpose. I own the 540D v.1 (v.2 has HDMI) and it converts NTSC to PAL, PAL to NTSC and outputs each of them natively (it is more versatile that way than a number of players that will read both PAL and NTSC, but only output one format). It is also region free right out of the box (no need to hack for that feature), has a multi format power supply (no need for a transformer in either Europe or N. America) and has an excellent audio stage (I bought it to be my primary CD player--the DVD portion of it was a bonus for me). It is not as inexpensive as some others, but it works well, has many features and I have been very happy with mine for three years plus.
