Some TVs don't allow the image to be changed when sent a hidef resolution (720p/1080i/1080p) but will allow various zoom/stretch mode when sent 480p. In fact, this is a must for digital displays and anamorphic DVDs with 480i/p. Maybe this is what the OP is talking about.

i was thinking 480 was 4x3 ratio and 1080 is was ah the other ratio there
16x9 i think i dont know mind is going blank lol

so when you upconvert it wont it look vertically sqwished

No, SD-DVD supports both 4:3 and 16:9 titles. Both are supported at 480 and HD resolutions. The aspect ratio conversion is handled automatically so everything "should" look correct.
