View Full Version : Netflix - how do you rent both HD DVD and Blu-Ray b@nned 11-28-07, 08:08 AM I just bought a LG drive and I want to order both HD DVD and Blu-Ray discs. How do I do that? s2mikey 11-28-07, 08:32 AM Just go into your preferences and choose which format is your first choice when renting, then your second choice, etc, etc. I have it setup so if a movie is available in BOTH HD formats I get the HD DVD. If its only on blu-ray then I get that. Lastly, if its only on crummy SD disc then I take that. BTW: You do ned to activate HD discs in your preferences also. Hope that helps b@nned 11-28-07, 08:42 AM thank you, I just found the screen to add blu-ray, couldn't see it before paxi 11-28-07, 08:47 AM another option is then to go to your queue. each movie will have format listed and you can drag down to specify exactly which format you want for each disk (once you have set your overall preferences) Mr. Cinema 11-28-07, 09:19 AM I wish they would have it set up to where if the BD is unavailable, they then ship you the HD DVD version. I believe right now, they would just skip down to the next movie. bbfn11 11-28-07, 09:27 AM If I remember correctly Netflix will send the next available format if the first format is unavailable. This happend for me with Blood Diamond. mosman22 11-28-07, 10:05 AM thank you, I just found the screen to add blu-ray, couldn't see it before If you rent HD DVD i would be vary wary. I don't know whether it is my A35 or the horrible quality of netflix HD DVDs, but i have had alot of issues with rental hd dvd playback. When i can choose between HD DVD and BD i choose bd due to the protecvtive stratch resistant layer. I have never had a blu ray not work. Over thanksgiving i had the family over for a movie night. OUt of the 3 hd dvd's i had rented Ant bully, and Polar Express didn't work at all. The player wouldn't even reconize them as HD DVD's, this was after throughly cleaning the disc. I wish hd dvd could get there s--- together and use the protectective coating like bd. This doesn't affect me for movies that i buy since i take really good care of my media. The netflix playability issues could also have something to do with the cheaper quality of these 3 rd gen players. I took the unplayable HD DVD of polar express over to a buddies house, who has the Add ON and it played fine. So my experience coupled with others posts in the A35 and 3rd gen threads these newer players just don't handle damaged discs well. Kosty 11-28-07, 11:57 AM The firmare in the 3rd gen players may not have the error checking the 2nd gen firmware now has into it. They probably will soon though. Has nothing to do with the optical drive or build quality. Your about the worse example of Netflix issues, I've seen. I use Netflix for my HD XA2 all the time and have had few issues and never an unplayable HD DVD disc. MattGuyOR 11-28-07, 12:35 PM I've only had one disc briefly skip and I've rented dozens of them from Netflix for my A2. I've been lucky. wormraper 11-28-07, 01:04 PM If you rent HD DVD i would be vary wary. I've NEVER had an issue with one single HD DVD ever on my A2. However on my BD player I've had 3 bad discs in the last month alone. Kind of amusing. Especially after I hear all the horror stories of hd dvd discs not playing and that all BD discs never seem to have problems :D mosman22 11-28-07, 01:38 PM this is not an HD DVD vs. BD comment (believe me I love both formats) but I've been netflixing for a while. I think it has more to do with my A 35 and 3rd gen players not handling discs with scratches and fingerprints. Like i said the discs that didn't play in my A 35 worked on my friends Add On. I really hope people are right about it being a FW issue and not the drive quality of the 3rd gen players. I was under the impression that the only difference bitween the A2 and A3 was the A3 is cheaper to make. That led my to hypothesize that 3rd gen players are cheaper and ipso facto of a lesser build quality, believe me i pray this isn't the case. Weren't the 3rd gen players the first line made exclusively in China, i could be wrong. If i am please corrrect me. I was really hoping the new FW 1.3 would take care of all the playback issue, but it obiviously hasn't. In my own personal expierence with Netflix, HD DVD's are the only ones that haven't played. Like i said this is my experience and may or may not be indicaticve of a larger trend. Maybe it is the disc maybe is my A 35, i don't know. wormraper 11-28-07, 01:54 PM I wasn't trying to make it into a format comparison. I just found it amusing being that I seem to be out of the norm. I've heard a lot that HD DVD's are more prone to failed discs and BD discs are nearly invincible, however my exp is the exact opposite. Nothing against anyone just chuckling at the Irony. alfbinet 11-28-07, 03:28 PM The firmare in the 3rd gen players may not have the error checking the 2nd gen firmware now has into it. I use Netflix for my HD XA2 all the time and have had few issues and never an unplayable HD DVD disc. I am about 1 and 1 for each format. If a film comes out on both formats I go HD DVD. BD films only I order blu-ray. I have had one bad HD DVD disc and (recently, this week a bad BD disc - Bridge to Terabithia) one bad BD disc. I get a movie a week and have been doing so since July 2006. |
