View Full Version : Audio lip synch issues (D* HR20) becoming a major annoyance

I'm hoping someone can help me out here. I recently moved into a new house and decided to go with Directv due to their current HD lineup.

I have the new 5 LNB slimline dish and the HR20 DVR connected via HDMI to my Toshiba 52HM84 DLP display.

It seems that all of the new HD channels have lip sync issues at some point or another and this occurs on my network channels from time to time as well. Sometimes it gets so bad that the audio and video will be up to a second off.

Is there a setting or something I need to do to correct this? I have noticed other threads regarding lip sync issues on specific channels, but this seems to happen on all HD channels for me.

On my other SD receivers I have no issues at all.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Sounds like a service issue. Did you try a total reboot?

Yes I have tried a reboot by pressing the little red button next to the access card. It corrects the problem for a minute or two, but then it starts happening again.

The problems with lip sync on MPEG4 channels have been going on ever since these things started up, and it's a problem at the head end, not your equipment. As you've noted, it's not consistent, but comes and goes on individual programs and various channels. If you do a search you can find more technical explanations of what's going wrong and why it seems so hard to get it fixed and keep it that way. It has to do with the complexity of converting ATSC to MPEG4.

The one bright light is that it's been steadily getting better. When DirecTv first put up HD local channels, the problems were horrendous. Now they're just an occasional annoyance (and a good reason to keep your OTA hook up it you have one.)

One thought: if your signal strength is low, it might make the sync problems worse, though you would normally get macroblocking or freezes, too. Check your signal strength on all satellites. If it's below 70 on any (103(b) is usually the most critical) you need to have your dish alignment tweaked.

My wifes about to have a cow with this problem. I also have the problem where the audio will go out for a couple of seconds...is that caused by the same issue?

I recently bought a Felston digital audio delay box (DD740) that works great. I put it between my DVR and receiver.
