View Full Version : The sound is gone on my Sony 970!
gladifoundu 11-28-07, 10:07 AM I read where it was a good idea to transport them face down, and had to move one from one room to another (maybe 15 feet), but when I first bought the tv I coulnd't fit it in the room in a regular position, so we had to tilt it to get it in.
Tilting it felt dangerous, so when I needed to move it to another room, and after reading it was best face down... I decided to tape some of that foamy type wrap around and over the front glass, carefully tilted it on it's face, and CAREFULLY AND SLOWLY slide it face down on the carpet (carpet seemed perfect cuz its soft but also flat and first enough to have the tv slide with ease). It seemed so easy, simple and quick that I felt like this would be how I move it from now on. Remember I bumped nothing, and moved it slowly, wasn't concerned any damage could have been done...
When I got it in the other room, carefully tilted it back up, plugged in the audio/video cables and turned it on, THERE WAS NO SOUND:confused::confused::confused:. I tried putting the audio cables in some of the many different colors on the back, but none of have seemed to work. The audio was fine 5 mintues before I turned it of, unplugged everything and moved it.
How the hell could I have damaged the sound???? What could be going on here, is there a chance the speakers aren't damaged? The sound isnt just messed up, I'm getting flat out nothing. What I read here talked about protecting the glass, not the black speakers along the sides.
Am I gonna have to try to use the warrenty? And how will that work? What all can I do to check to see if this is just some setting or something? And I just recieved my new HD DVD player in the mail today

What are you connecting and how? Which inputs are you using?
gladifoundu 11-28-07, 10:38 PM When I hooked it back up in the new spot I figured the same thing, must be component cables hooked up wrong, but then I tried all sorts of connecting combos, but none work. After that I hooked my HDMI cable up, and STILL no sound, that's when I realized I was probably in trouble.
raouliii 11-29-07, 08:28 AM You didn't answer my questions.
gladifoundu 11-29-07, 12:44 PM Right now I'm connected via HDMI. I had originally (when I first got it many months ago, using HDMI and the sound was fine). Then I started using component (the cables that have 5 plugs, 2 audio, 3 video) sound was fine with that as well. Then like I said I moved TV to the other room, reconnected component, and got zero audio.
Then I plugged HDMI(currently) in again, and when IT got no audio either, I said to myself, well how can it be how I'm connecting things when there's only one way to connect the HDMI, and it's in correctly showing picture, but like the component, no sound.
Also, have been using explorer 8300hd sci atlanta this whole time, and it can't be the STB because it was replaced 2 days ago with a new one over other cable issues. Before the switch the other wasn't giving sound either. Please help. Anything I can try?
raouliii 11-29-07, 01:12 PM If you're sure that mis-cabling is ruled out, then my next suggestion is to consider setup issues within the set or the outboard components. There is an option to turn on/off the tv's internal speakers in the user's menu. Try cycling that option a few times. Is there a way for you to validate that audio is being output from your stb by plugging it into some other tv or stereo?
There is always the remote possiblity that in the process of moving the set, which may flex the chassis a bit, the connectivity of the rear panel was impacted. In that case you would need to remove the back of the set and make sure all of the components/boards, especially associated with the rear panel, are seated. If you do this, do not use an electric screwdriver.
gladifoundu 11-29-07, 04:31 PM First, thanks for helping me along with this. Yeah, I had tried to switch the speaker option in the menu, as well as the other options under sound, but still no sound. Did it again just now. I will get access to the other tv in the has to verify the stb sound, but i can't see a scenario where STB suddenly stops giving sound right after I move the TV, and then the replacement STB i now have also not giving sound. Sounds pretty much impossible, but I'll verify. Are those 2 only what you meant by "consider setup issues within the set or the outboard components"?
The unscrew the tv scenario sounds risky, I'd be ok to do that myself? Man, I hope it doesn't come to having to try that.
Another question, if I DVR shows with this, while its having the sound issue, do you think I could play the recorded shows later (once the sound is fixed), and have sound with them?
RWetmore 11-30-07, 10:13 AM It sounds like the speakers may have simply become disconnected. Be very careful if you open up the back of the set. Even when unplugged, the capacitors hold a lethal charge of electricity. If you are going to open up the back of the set, I'd recommend leaving the set unplugged for at least a few days prior.
Also, your set is still probably under warranty, so your best bet is to put in service call.
gladifoundu 11-30-07, 04:36 PM It's been under a year so it should. So if I call Sony how does that work, do they send someone to my house, do I have to take it somewhere within a few miles of my house, or do they expect you to take it some ubsurdly far distance away? And if I call now, how quick might it be taken care of?

You probably have a bad connection, most likely a sound board that dislodge when you faced the tube down, i would open the set and reseat e all the boards,if you don't know which one is the sound board.
