View Full Version : The Price Is Right? Not in HD at this time.
i'm watching the price is right and i caught a glimpse of one of the on-stage cams and the hood around the lens had a big HD written on the side of it
i wonder why they don't broadcast the show in HD

1) A lot of SD studio cameras are using HD lenses simply because the optical quality is better.
2) A lot of SD shows use HD cameras just because as the cameras needed replacing, the cost was not much more to get HD units instead of SD. At this point, unless a show has zero plans to go HD in the next decade or so, there's little savings in buying SD cameras.
3) You need more than HD cameras in order to shoot an HD studio show.
Plus, do we really need to see Drew Carey in HD?!

I have, but I think it was a transfer from 16mm.

the price is right is such a colorful show, it's a shame it's not in HD
Marcus Carr 11-28-07, 05:50 PM His sitcom was in HD.
I saw Drew at one of our mess tents at Bagram Airfield a couple years ago; he's a much bigger dude than I had thought. Very nice guy.

Bigger vertically or bigger horizontally? :p I have also heard he's an all-around good guy.
I caght a few shows last week, looks like he is still getting a hang of things. I also noticed that before the show they do show the HD symbol, so maybe somewhere they are showing this in HD, or plan to soon.

This is the same crew that has been doing the show for years, so I don't know what they are getting a hang of. The HD logo on the camera lens has nothing to do with the camera's HD capablilty or any of the other production equipment.
Cams have been HD for awhile. Just because the cameras are HD doesn't mean they can just decide to start showing it in HD with the flick of a switch.

No of course not, it is the same production and technical crew.

Exactly. The original post said:

There's nothing in there about the production or technical crew.
ncxcstud 11-29-07, 09:13 AM Isn't TPIR for the most part, a very CHEAPLY built show in their sets and props?? HD wouldn't do the show justice and you'd be able to tell how fake and such the sets are. Unless they've upgraded the show since Barker left (haven't watched it yet, but I may today since class doesn't start until 1:15...)
Just remember, even though I said the sets are cheaply made, doesn't mean the show isn't great...Even from looking in SD, it seems some of their stuff was made at my production studio at Newberry College...lol

The sets and games have undergone many quiet upgrades and rebuilds over the decades. Few, in any, of the "old" games are the original models. They only pretend to be.
I was watching this morning and saw one of their cameras in the background had a big "HD" logo on the bottom corner like most others do. I was wondering if CBS really shows it in HD because our local station does not show it in HD.
No, not at this time.
The cameras, or most likely the lens, can well be HD without the rest of the infrastructure required for HD production.
Same thing discussed here: (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=946680&highlight=price+is+right)
The cameras have been HD for a while (Sony HDC 1500Ls) and the studio has been fully upgraded to HD for HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher. Nothing definite, but TPIR is looking into HD perhaps as early as later this year.

Sorry, the search function would not bring that up.

When did Maher's show go HD?
MeatChicken 01-02-08, 01:43 PM I'd like to see a "Game Show" ..
....say, produced by CBS, Where the "contestants" are actually the stars & producers of some of their Non-HD shows, Such as Price-is-Right , 48hrs Mystery, & Survivor / Amazing Race ..
Drew Cary, Jeff Probst, Burnett ect ...
The "Winner" gets their show Broadcast in HD, & "wins" all nessessary HD equipment to do so .... :)

Is there anything that shows Real Time has gone HD? HBO website doesn't list it as HD.
URFloorMatt 01-02-08, 03:39 PM Maher's show returns next Friday, Jan. 11. I guess we'll find out then.
Real Time with Bill Maher is scheduled for its first season in HD on January 11 2008.
