I cannot find a thread on this TV, so I am making one so we can get some discussion going. I believe this set is different enough from the 542i to warrant a separate thread.

I picked up this TV from Office Depot on Black Friday for $899 with a $200 MIR bringing the price down to $699... an absolute steal in my opinion (I remember a couple years back getting my Olevia 27" for 799 and being ecstatic at the price, lol.) I know others may have gotten this BF deal as well.

Let's get the discussion going, I'm heading out right now, but would love to hear how people are tweaking their settings for the best picture.

Is this a fluke? Or are others seeing this too?

I have not hooked mine up to a 1080p source so I have not experienced this. Has anyone else experienced the white jagged bar the top of some images? I noticed by bumping the v-position up the white bar disappears, but on some stations it seems like bumping this up causes a bar to appear on the bottom  Im having trouble finding the perfect v-positioning.

I just bought this TV on BF and at OD as well. Thanks for starting the thread I have been commenting on the 542i thread but I will keep it here now. Yes I do see a white jagged bar on some channels too and also fiddled around with the v setting. Seems like once you set it it comes back again. Its just on a few channels and it comes and goes. Mine is hooked up through a Scientific Atlanta box via Time Warner Cable. It shows 1080i when I get to the HD channels. By the way what is the difference between 1080i & 1080p?
This box supports a HDMI cable so I just hooked that up tonight for the first time.
There was not a big noticeable difference but it's nice to have one cable instead of 5 with the component connection. There is one small problem with the HDMI connection. When I'm channel surfing there seems to be a delay for the TV to recognize the signal. It goes to blue screen and says "No Signal" for about 1 second and then it's OK. I don't know if this is a cable box or a cable problem. I did buy a really inexpensive HDMI cable but everybody tells me the cost of the cable should not matter. So I might go back to the Component hook up if I can't find the problem. Maybe somebody reading this thread can help.

I have not experienced that issue with an HDMI hookup (the no signal), I am using a Dish receiver though.

I just bought this TV on BF and at OD as well, got in line at 4:45am for a 6am opening.

The picture is excellent for the price and it has many inputs. (2 HDMI)

Thanks to everyone who has posted in this forum on the subject of Olevia LCDs and the various models, it helped me make my decision.

The only problem I have is with my upconverting DVD player, which is squashing the picture vertically. The LCD displays that the signal is 1080i via HDMI. (DVD model: hts-philips 3555.) I will test an older DVD player tonight to see if I have the same issues.

I just bit the bullet and picked up the 242T at OD for 849. Have not tried to hook it up yet because I am an idiot and will wait for my other half to get here. Will order the HDTV cable box from cox and see how it goes. Some people are having problems with surround sound and I hope that is not going to be a problem. I am running it threw my reciever and plan to keep it that way.

there is a lag in guitar hero, it is difficult to calibrate it just right....any ideas about overcoming the delay in audio and video?

Other than that, no issues.....not a single dead pixel that i can see, no issues with sound, inputs, picture quality whatsoever.....

I will keep posted on any new developments....i am switching to the Wii HD cable from composite to see if that makes a difference....

I am new to this forum and am looking for some help. I purchased a new 242T Sunday & have been watching it with a standard definition receiver box (Verizon Fios). I was happy with how good a picture I was getting even though it wasn't HD. I also have a 52" Sharp Aquos & non HD channels are frustrating to watch although the HD channels are great. Today I received a new HD receiver box from Verizon for the 242T. Now many of my HD channels do not give me a full screen. In fact some have a white line at the top, with left & right blocks around 5" per side. I wasn't having this problem with the SD receiver. I have experimented with full screen, zoom 16:9 adjustments , etc... without any success. I called tech support from Verizon & they blamed the TV. My 52" Sharp gets all the stations with full screen. The HD/DVR box is by Motorola & is model QIP6416-2. Any ideas or solutions? Is it really the TV & will I have to live with it?

Keiths1, I had a similar problem with my Time Warner Scientific Atlanta box.
It ended up being a setting in the cable box. Try to go to your video settings via menu on your remote and change the setting to 1080i this is the HD setting and should bring all HD channels to full screen.
Hope that helps.

I got this TV a couple weeks ago and have enjoyed it since. I don't have an audio system yet, but is it true that the TV won't input 5.1 sound from OTA HD even over the Toslink/coaxial? I have read that before. That is a disappointing mark on a great TV.

I have the same problem with the line on some HD channels only. I did mess with the cable box which is from Cox but it did not help. With Cox, you have like 700 channels which are all local hd. They don't go full screen. Regular TV if in a HD broadcast is full screen. I have another week before I can take it back so any input would be helpful.

I tried the possible fixes offered by this forum, unfortunately it didn't resolve the probelm, thanks any way. I spoke to a Verizon tech over the phone to try to resolve my non full screen issues to no avail, then tried tech support for Olevia. The tech gave me some possible fixes to try but none resolved the problem. While I had the tech on the phone & asked about remote control codes. She told me basically codes for this tv haven't been released yet? That sounded kind of funny. I know that if I can't use one remote to do basic things (volume etc...) & I can't get full screen on HD, I am not going to be happy with the TV. When loosing 5" on each side, it's like watching a 32" TV. I paid for a 42" TV. I am starting to believe there are some compatibility issues with this TV and other equipment. It's a shame beacause I love the quality of picture the TV produces, I like the look of the TV etc... but am not able to use my TV to the fullest. I have a few days yet to see if I can resolve these problems & if not I guess I'll have to return the TV & go with another brand. By the way, I know I can get a learning remote to resolve most remote issues, but that seems a little cheesy to have to do. Still any ideas out there, I'm all ears.

finally, after some tweaking...

for my dvd player (philips hts-3555), I had to do two settings: (1) tv format 16:9, not 4:3 (2) hdmi setup to auto or 1080i.

for my htpc (sagetv with sagemc), I had to set the "video renderer" setting to VMR9.

now I am etremely happy.

Are there any ghosting or lag problems with video games? On my 32'' Olevia there was pretty awful ghosting when playing in 480i and 480p. The video and audio also got off sync a lot in normal TV. Of course that TV has the ATI processor which I heard wasn't very good. Also, has anybody tried downloading a driver update off the olevia website to fix the problems?

I just picked one up on Christmas Eve at Target for $560, on clearance for $800 and 30% off for the display model, then added the 3 year warranty for a total of $652 out the door.

Beautiful picture with the default settings, watched some of Madagascar last night a local hd channel at 1080i, amazing. I was surprised how much more detailed it is over a dvd.

Last night I moved my Myth box (Shuttle xpc, like 5 years old) up into the entertainment center and hooked it up to the 242t, great picture. My wife watched a Harry Potter dvd on it, I wasn't that impressed with the picture coming from the pc. I'm going to try it on the dvd player via component for a comparison, it may just be the film because it's kind of a dark movie overall, we'll see.

I have been fairly impressed with some other content, Madagascar and Pirates of the Caribbean were awesome in hd ota, I just need to make sure I'm feeding it a good signal.

Sigh, I have bought a second Olevia again and I am forced to use its tuner until my HD DVR and scaler arrive with my household goods. From my first experience with them 2-3 years ago, I have come to understand that they epitomize "Chinese Engineering." Ie., awkward, incomplete and fragile. So I was delighted to discover that since that time they had discovered channel labeling - bringing them up to the mid-1990s! Alas, after going through every one of the hundred analog and digital channels available to me I discovered two very annoying things about my 242T:

1. On analog channels, if station ID is transmitted in the XDS data, it will instantly replace your hard fought entered data instantly, and for ever. Unfortunately, if your local affiliate is some local boob operation, they will leave the network feed data in the stream, resulting in station names like "NET6". There does not seem to be a way to defeat this "feature".

2. On digital channels, you can spend all day long entering channel names and they will continue to work correctly until you power cycle the TV. Then the next time you visit them, they are replaced with "RFXX-YY" for no apparent reason. Ah, Chinese engineering at its finest.

Also, the "DISPLAY" button on the remote does not really seem to do much, at least on my cable network. The program XDS data does not appear for analog channels and PSIP data is MIA for digital channels. I am running th 21B firmware, which I believe is the latest.

Does anyone have a work around for the two channel name problems or will I just need to buy another Olevia in 2-3 years and hope their 3rd rate engineers have advanced to turn of the millenium functionality?

And is there any hope that they will ever learn the finer details of image scaling and positioning or are they forever mired in an analog CRT world of overscan and bizarre aspect ratios?

Note: this is all on cable, with cable analog channel spacing and QAM digital tuning. I have not tried OTA yet.

I too have 21b firmware and the channel labeling issues, though here the labels revert back to the callsigns, so it's not that big of an issue except for a couple of channels.

As far as scaling/positioning, it's perfect with my 4 sources--ota/cable/computer/dvd, and the zoom aspects work properly, etc.

On the Chinese comments, you knew going in what you were buying so you really can't complain, the price offsets those issues.

I'm seeing the 242T (purchased on Monday from Target) displaying 1080p content both from an SA HD box, and a DVD player with HDMI.

I'm wondering though if it's only recognizing the quality of the signal it's getting, and not actually putting out a non-interlaced picture. Has anyone got a really slow-motion camera to check? LOL

How would we actually tell if the display was interlaced or not?

When it says 1080p for the input, what that means is that this TV can recognize and accept a 1080p input and then it scales it down to the native 1360x768 display for output. Same thing with 1080i signal. The signal is scaled down to 1360x768.

I have had the Olevia 242T now for a few days and just wanted to leave a few impressions.

- This set looks amazing when using Xbox 360. I used both component and VGA outputs from the Xbox 360 and found that the VGA input looks slightly better. When using component output with the 360 I noticed some subtle blurriness when moving quickly in Halo 3. When I connected via VGA cables I did not get that effect. It feels like playing a PC game on a PC. I have the resolution set to 1366x768 from the 360. That is the native resolution of the monitor and is what should be used. Now I will say that either way it still looked great, but to my eyes there was a noticeable improvement with VGA. I got further improvement in image quality by selecting 1:1 Aspect (You can toggle Aspect by pressing the Aspect button on the Remote)

-I read somewhere that someone got 1080p input working. My experience with 1080p (1920 x 1080) signal from my Xbox 360 via VGA cable is that it is not recognized. When I tried 1080p via component cables the screen showed but it was split in half oddly mirroring parts of the display on both halves of the screen. Needless to say it was unusable at 1080p from either component or VGA.

-I have not properly calibrated the set yet as I am waiting for Digital Video Essentials HD-DVD to arrive. I will say that it appears that the Black levels look pretty darn good even before calibration...so I can't wait for the final results but I'm sure the Image will look great once properly calibrated. I can definitely see there is excessive red push with default settings (as in any new uncalibrated TV set). I look forward to fixing that with calibration.

-I have a personal preference to watch movies in 6500K setting for the VGA input from my xbox 360...but I leave the TV side on the Default color temp. I suggest you leave settings largely at defaults unless your using a calibration DVD to adjust appropriately. Minor adjustments to Brightness and contrast may be OK but don't over do it unless your using an appropriate calibration DVD.

-The built in speakers are OK but nothing spectacular and you should definitely use your dedicated Surround Sound system if you have one. TV speakers can be shut off via a menu option. I'm spoiled by my previous Sony Television that had amazing built in speakers so take this with a grain of salt.

-Menu's on the TV are very awkward at first. You get used to it after a while and I actually find that being able to adjust things while not completely obscuring the screen is actually pretty cool. But other times I wish it would give you a more traditional menu system to make changes.

-Adjusting display settings will apply only to the currently selected source. I mention this only because it's not readily apparent or at least it wasn't to me at the time.

-The 242T has an excellent ATSC tuner that does a great job at picking up over the air digital broadcast signals. My older Sony CRT HDTV was only able to receive 4 or 5 channels. The 242T had no problem receiving over 15 channels with the same rabbit ears antenna. I even have the antenna sloppily placed behind the TV and the reception is still excellent.

-The 242T only has 1 coaxil input which thus far has lead to my only major disappointment with the TV and for me this is a real doozy! It appears to me that the TV can only be set to receive only Cable TV or only Over the Air channels via the coaxil input. So not only do I have to swap cables in the back of the set to between my cable and the rabbit ears...but I also have to go into the settings and tell the TV to search for channels each and every time I want to switch between Cable and Over the Air channels. I sure hope that I'm missing something and that there's a way to simply switch between Cable and Over the Air. I really like to watch Discover Channel and CNN on cable but often watch ABC, CBS & NBC in HiDef via the ATSC Tuner. If anyone knows of a better way to go about this....please let me know!!!

-The 242T displays Analog Cable and Over the air signals pretty darn good. Albeit that standard def signals can only look so good on any HDTV. I think at this point I'm just getting sick of crappy standard def programming. I can't wait till All Standard Def broadcast are turned off in 2009.

-The remote control is not bad. It lets you do the basics as well as Aspect, Freeze, Lighting (Bright Room, Dark Room, Medium Room), Favorite, CC, Auto (This auto adjust the image), Sleep, Time, Source, Display, Audio and Menu. The remote is not back lit. Do yourself a favor and buy a Logitech Harmony remote.

-I checked on the Olevia.com website for a Firmware update. It requires you to register before attempting to search for firmware update for your television by Serial Number. It reported that there were no firmware updates available for my set. I did just purchase it from Target on Dec 30, 2007.

-No DVI port...but remember that HDMI = DVI once you get an adapter cable from monoprice.com for $5. That being said I'm happy to have VGA as you can use this monitor with any laptop quite easily.

-TV looks sharp. Aesthetically speaking it gets the job done and thank heavens it's Black and not Grey or Silver. Speakers can be removed but honestly why in the hell would you want to? Has VESA standard holes in the back for standard wall mounting kits.

-Read somewhere that this TV has a glass protective screen...but it is decidedly NOT glass. I would be careful cleaning this set and for the love of all that is Holy I would never let someone swing a Wii controller anywhere near my TV!

-I noticed the first few times of powering up the TV set that it took about about a minute to "warmup" and for the TV to reach it's full brightness. Now wheter or not you notice this happening or not on your other TV sets...pretty much all TV's need to warm up before you get full brightness and accurate colors. the Digital Video Essentials DVD actually advises you to wait 30 minutes after powering on TV set before proceeding with Calibration to get accurate results. The set takes about 14 seconds before you see an image from your input signal of choice on the screen from the time you press the power button.:)

For the firmware, get into the ftp site, then follow the directories for the model number and you'll find the most current firmware, even though olevia.com doesn't show one available there is, 21b is the version. I updated but saw zero change in anything so it must have been a very minor fix/update to something.

On the coax input, could you use your dvd's tuner for the regular cable channels and output that via component or other? We have a digital cable box so I'm using the s-video out of that for regular cable while the coax is for hd ota.

I unfortunately am not using a cable box or any device that has it's own tuner to then use the S-Video or component outputs from. I just use standard cable feed directly into the 242T.

And the problem wouldn't be so bad if the TV set remembered the presets. But as it stands now I must do a complete channel search for either Cable or Over The Air each and every single time I switch between cable or Antenna. This is just inexcusable poor design in my opinion. I am going to call Olevia Tech Support and see if I can get a solution or if nothing else at least I'll make my complaint known to them.

I did give that a try last night already and it did not work. There is no way to manually add a digital over the Air channel apparently. I could not enter 7.1 or 4.2 for example. It would only let me enter whole numbers like 8, 9 or 10.

I recently purchased a 242V (Black Friday, $699 at BJ's) which I understand is similar to the 242T. My set is connected directly to cable (no box) and I am able to get a few unscrambled HDTV broadcasts.

I had been using the RCA analog audio outputs to my Onyko HT reciever and reently tried the digital audio coax and optic to my Onyko which does not have HDMI. My DVD player connects to the TV with HDMI and audio out via optic to the Onyko. No audio using the 242V digital outputs and after researching found the 242V does not pass 5.1 audio.

I suspect the 242T has a similar problem as I am trying to find out if this is a design issue or will a future firmware upgrade support 5.1 pass through. While a Comcast HD subscription will provide the 5.1 through the set top box, I give them enough money and at this time do not want the HD service. I am able to get the HD Fox, CBS, ABC games and I am happy with the set's performance.

I used the Digital Video Essentials HD-DVD/DVD. I must warn folks that while the DVD side of the DVE Calibration disc has a guided tutorial of sorts and an in depth explanation of Home Theatre setups, the HD-DVD side as only the test screens along with brief text explanations of what you are to do. These brief explanations were pretty much worthless and I relied on reading a .PDF manual that you can get online from their website at http://videoessentials.com/dvehd/images/DVE_HD_Program_final.pdf.

This Disc has a ton of test screens, most of which the average person will not use. Many of them are intended for Professional TV service personnel with professional calibration and test equipment.

The DVE HD-DVD calibration screens that I used:
Chapter 1: PLUGE w/ Gray Scale
Chapter 5: 75% Color Bars w/ Reference Gray
Chapter 14: Reverse Gray Ramp w/Steps
SMPTE RP 133 Resolution Chart

My goal was to properly adjust Brightness & Contrast, Color & Tint & Sharpness. The crazy menu system that is so hard to learn at first actually comes in handy when adjusting the image as it stays thankfully out of the way.

My setup:
Olevia 242T
Xbox 360 using VGA cable - Output signal of 1360 x 768 60Hz
Xbox 360 HD-DVD add on drive

I started out by setting a few options right off the get go:

Menu > Picture > Noise Reduction > OFF
I later tested Noise reduction on the Resolution Chart and found that all settings of NR only made the image more blurry. Best if you just shut that off.

Menu > Picture > Color Temp > 6500K
6500K is NTSC standard color temperature. This is the color temperature that all the TV shows and movies you watch are calibrated to. That being said, many folks don't like using 6500K as it give the picture a much warmer look which has a practical effect of making image appear not as bright or adds a yellower feel to the whites. This one is really up to your personal preference, but might I suggest that you use 6500K for calibration and then switch back after your done if you prefer Native.

Menu > Picture > Mode > Lighting > Dark Room
The Beauty of using Dark Room for calibration is that you always have the option of quickly making the TV brighter by choosing Medium Room or Bright Room.

---------------------------------------------
And on to the Calibration:

Chapter 1: PLUGE w/ Gray Scale
The trick with this screen is to set the brightness level to the point where the dark outer black bar is just barely visible against the black background. And when I say barely visible I mean at a point that you really just about can't distinguish it from the background. (Don't worry if it's too dark you can adjust later. The key is doing the calibration properly and then going back and making adjustments as per your personal taste).

You can also adjust contrast levels here but I found the Pluge screen is difficult to adjust contrast on an LCD. Much more suited for CRT in my opinion.

Chapter 14: Reverse Gray Ramp w/Steps
You can use the Gray Ramps to adjust contrast levels. What your aiming for is that every single shade of grey is visible. Especially pay attention to the white bar at the end...you should be able to see a slight difference in the next bar even if it barely noticeable, the next bar over should not be white as well. It should be a slight shade of grey but nearly white. Once you get that you've got the contrast.

Chapter 5: 75% Color Bars w/ Reference Gray
For this step you will need the Color Filters card. This card includes a Green, Blue & Red filter that you will look through as your calibrating the set. First adjust your Color setting while looking through the blue filter at the reference chart. You are aiming for all of the areas of Blue to be of the same intensity. By adjusting color you will get close...by adjusting Tint you will get the adjustment fine tuned so that it's spot on. (See Page 34 of the PDF file)
You really only need to worry about the adjustment looking through the Blue Filter.

SMPTE RP 133 Resolution Chart
Use this chart to adjust your Sharpness level.

Unfortunately the Olevia doesn't give you numbers when your changing values. I figured out the scale goes from 0 - 100 and you can count the adjustments to get the value. The values are (X) spaces to the right of the far left of the scale. In other words start on the far left of the screen at 0 and click over X amount of times to get to the settings I am using. My disclaimer is that every TV set is slightly different and you really should perform the calibration yourself to fine tune accurately for your individual TV set. Your personal taste will also be different than mine but at least this is a good starting point.

My Final Settings:
Brightness: 28
Contrast: 80
Sharpness: 8 or 80 (This moves in increments of 10 so 8 steps)
Tint: 51
Color: 52
Noise Reduction: OFF
Mode > Lighting > Dark Room

Hope you all find this useful.

does anyone know how to remove the stand off of the 242T? There is absolutely NO information from Olevia on how to do this, and there are about 25 various screws which 'may' be the correct ones to remove.

On a side note, I have spent 45 minutes on the phone trying to get an Olevia representative to talk to, this may be due to me calling at 9:45 EST and/or a Sunday???

I think there's like a total of 6-8 screws you have to remove. You'll need a long Philip screw driver cause those screws in in very deep.

Good Luck.

I finally got around to testing the audio outputs out of the TV set into my Audio Amplifier.

Using the RCA Stereo outputs the amplifier shows that it is receiving Dolby Pro Logic II and I can hear that my front and rear L & R speakers are getting surround sound.

I also tried using the Digital Optical output from the TV to my Amp and again Dolby Pro Logic II showed and LPCM. The digital signal required for me to put the volume way up on my receiver to hear at the same level of the RCA outputs and sounded a bit more refined. I was watching a college football game at the time.

So it appears to me that the Audio outputs are working just as they should and I am not experiencing any problems with Surround Sound being carried out via either RCA or Optical connections.

I have still had no luck figuring a way around this apparent design flaw. I cannot manually program in digital ATSC channels as it doesn't allow you to enter the .1, .2 ...etc. The TV does not remember the channels it Auto Scanned either, so everytime I switch between Cable and Over the Air antenna, I have to manually initiate an AutoScan for Channels that takes a few minutes each time.

Can anyone else verify this same behavior on thier set? Anyone know of a way around this other than me having to go get a cable box to use a different input for cable other than built in tuner?

I guess I'll have to call Olevia to get the official company word on this.

Yeah, thanks for the help. I'm sure I know nothing about scaling since my only knowledge of video scaling comes from designing and implementing the Runco DHD scaler. Your input is so appreciated.

Now, would anybody who actually knows anything about this cheap LCD care to comment? I have contacted Olevia/Syntax-Brillan in the past to inquire about problems and there response has been "we don't support that" or "do not use that function" or "our remotes work very well".

Has anyone looked at the serial interface protocol? OMG, it's almost unusable - this is absolute rookie work.

I just got a 242T, and I am having some issues with it, the people I bought it from say there is nothing wrong with it, but I think it has issues. The TV when hooked to different PCs either VGA or DVI->HDMI I dont know how to explain exactly but some of you may know that computer monitors when they do not have correct resolution display bad images, such as some parts of the screen are darker than the others(This is what is noticeable on websites, and writing. So what I have is the screen first not correctly displaying 1360x768, I have it currently hooked up with 1280x768, and if its 1360x768 it shows up in 4:3. Instead of 16:9, Movies look kind of grainy. Overall the tv is a refurbished model and I could not find a good deal for a new one so I picked it up. Now I am unsure how to solve my problem due to the person I purchased from looked at it and says it is fine. They do give 21 day warranty then 90 day at olevia now I am wondering if Olevia will come out for my TV if I call them or what will happen. Some insight on all of this from someone would be great. Thanks.

Like few other people who have been hanging on SD, I also got this on clearance in Target.
Poking around Olevia site I found a page there (http://www.olevia.com/en-us/Support/Firmware.aspx) which gets you the correct firmware without going via FTP site or registration.
Just enter your FM number, and it brings up the latest FW.

Have you tried different resolutions from your PC?
You can try 1280 x 768, 1280 x 800, 1280 x 720, 1360 x 768.
Try pressing the Aspect button on the remote to see if you can find an aspect where things look normal.

Are you using VGA or DVI with an HDMI adapter? Whatever your using, try the other connector and see if that works.

also picked this one up at Target on clearance last week...going to hook it up tomorrow and was hoping to pick up my local CBS HD broadcast to watch the football games in HD. Can I just run my current cable into the coax to receive the unscrambled free local HD feeds? Does the QAM tuner automatically find these channels? (I noticed someone above said you cannot enter the .1 of the channel with the remote) Thanks!

I was referring to not being able to manually add channels with .1, .2, etc when trying to do so in the menu. Once those channels are Auto Scanned though you can access them just fine.

Yes you can run current cable or a TV antenna into the coax and it can unscramble free local HD feeds. But it depends on your cable provider and if they have these free feeds. If they are there the Channel Auto Search will indeed find them.

TW free HD is if you have the "digital" package. Although without out it I have been able to pick up all the HD channels that come with the "digital" package in our area (I live in Limerick, ME) except for the ESPN's, Universal HD, and MoJo. However, you'll also pick up 75.5. 75.6 and 75.7 which are are HD channels too, however they do not always come in and more frequently then not FREEZE :mad:the 242T, where you have to actually turn off the power button on the back of the tv.

First time post.

I purchased the 242T about a week ago at OD for $799 and I love the TV especially since I've upgraded to the Di sh HD package.

However, I have one issue and a question for you all.

1- I have one problem with the white, fuzzy, boxy line at the top of the screen from time to time. I can adjust it out with the vertical setting. However, it does reappear over time. Any suggestions how to clear that up?

2- Aspect settings. What is the difference between the 1:1 Mode setting and the Aspect Mode setting?

One last question...did your TV's come with an HDMI cable...mine did not. Will Olevia send one out?

Thanks

2- Aspect settings. What is the difference between the 1:1 Mode setting and the Aspect Mode setting?

It means that your TV set will only display the exact amount of pixels that the input signal provides. So lets say the input signal is from your laptop into the VGA port in the back. Lets say Your laptop is outputting a 640x480 signal. In 1:1 Mode the TV will display only the 640x480 resolution on the screen and not up convert the image so it fills the screen. This will leave the 640x480 image in the middle of the screen surrounded by lots of black space which is the unused pixels since your screen is capable of 1366x768 native resolution. To go full screen your display would have to interpolate several pixels for every 1 pixel to fill the screen with the same 640 x 480 resolution. So then it would be some other ratio like 5:1 for example or for every 1 pixel of the 640 x 480 resolution, the TV would convert those to 5 pixels to be able to fill the screen with the image.

More info on Wikipedia on Pixels: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixel

One last question...did your TV's come with an HDMI cable...mine did not. Will Olevia send one out?

The TV does not come with an HDMI cable. Most TV's do not, just as they don't come with component, VGA or any other video/audio cables. It is usually your output device that comes with cables (DVD Player, Xbox, etc.)

Check out monoprice.com for really inexpensive HDMI cables. Don't buy them from local stores you will get ripped off.

Look on the back of the set...there is a sticker that tells you where it is. The port is not visible when looking down...you have to crouch down and look up from the bottom part to see the port. It's not a USB port like you would have on your computer....but the connector that you would find on a printer. So you plug normal USB side into computer and the other side into the TV directly.

You must supply the TV with a 1080i signal. That can happen via VGA, HDMI or Component inputs...also via the tuner that will pick up over the air HD broadcast in 1080i.

You will need rabbit ears and set the TV to scan Over the Air channels to view HD over the air broadcast.

I finally called Olevia tech support to find out official word on this issue. It took about 8 minutes before I got someone on the phone. She was kind and helpful and then referred me on to another level of tech support. I waited another 3 or 4 minutes before they came on the line.

They said there was no way around having to scan for channels each time you switch between Over The Air Antenna and Cable. It would have been great if this TV had 2 tuners...that would solve my problem. Looks like I will have to get a cable box or a VCR or some device that has a tuner built in to then send the output to my TV via S-Video. I will then leave my Tuner for the Over the Air antenna.

When you want to access or manually scan for a channel like say 91.5, try 'Channel Add' for 91 and see if it scans the entire 91.XX range and permits you to access channels that are active at the time within that range.

I have a different model Olevia, and the above works for me for 91, 92, 93 and 94. I do not know if the same process would work OTA as I have yet to use that tuner.

The PC's resolution is 1360x768, but the TV's is 1366x768, so I think that problem was from the TV stretching the image horizontally those extra 6 pixels. When I set the aspect on the VGA input to 1:1, the effect you described went away. You lose 3 pixels on the left and 3 on the right... not by cropping the image, but the image just doesn't make use of those extra pixels. Text looks great now, so I don't mind that too much.

Sorry for the long post. I hope to help someone else.
I have been having trouble with my display model I bought in December from Target the last week. When the TV is turned on for the first time each day there is popping and snapping with horizontal white lines that lasts for about 10 seconds then all is normal. It has been happening more often the last few days. I called Olevia and they had me try different things ( plug tv and cable box in seperate plugs, plug tv in surge suppressor, unplug tv and all cables for 2 hours etc) Nothing worked and when I called today was put thru to level 2 tech support and they are giving me another tv. At first they said an open box one will be sent to me all I had to do was send a copy of my receipt to them in an email. I called back again and got another level 2 tech and I asked to speak to a supervisor about wanting a new tv. I was put on ignore/ hold and he came back on and he talked to a supervisow who authorized a new replacement. It should be here in 7-10 days. I tried talking to Target corporate office about getting a new tv from the store which I know there are none left. I tried getting them to upgrade tv to the newer model. No go. All they will do is give me my money back and let me buy the new model at the current price (not a slickdeal). I am able to transfer the extended warranty to the new tv thru Target. If anybody needs more info on this let me know how I can help. If you are nice on the phone it helps.

I have owned a 242T since June '07. Overall, I am very pleased with the set and feel that it is a good quality set for the money spent on it. I purchased it at Target, and I want to give kudos to my local Target for their customer service. When I purchased the TV, it was priced at $1199-in the 90 after my purchase I saw two price drops to en eventual price of $799. My local Target refunded me the difference no questions asked. We also had the same situation with a Dyson vacuum we purchased at Target and got the same result!

Now on to the TV. I have a VIP 211 Dish Network HD receiver, and the HD picture quality is amazing. My previous set was a Mitsubishi 42" CRT rear projection 1080i set, and the Olevia picture quality far surpasses that set at nearly 1/3 of the price of my old Mitsubishi. The Mits had horrible artifacts around the edges of anything in motion and also had a very bad red push that I could not get adjusted out. I also had numerous quality issues with the Mits and had over $800 in repair bills on it in the 6 years that I owned it. That solidified my purchase of an off-brand more cost effective set this time around and I have been pleasantly surprised at what I received.

First off, the positives.

1) My XBox 360 looks amazing and I actually run it at 1080p through component and the set is showing that it is displaying the same. I have no way to confirm that it is actually displaying 1080p, but I have cycled through the display settings, and to the naked eye the picture is slightly more crisp and clear than at 1080i or 720p.

2) I still watch a good share of SD programming, and this set displays SD much better than my old 42" Mits. I when watching SD I adjust the sharpness to the lower end of the adjustment and it does a nice job softening the rough edges that HD sets are notorious for adding to 480i programming. I even have some old westerns on video that still look decent.

3) I love the subwoofer out. I previously had a over the top home theater setup that was not really that nice to look at according to my wife. I now just use the internal speakers (marginal at best), but audio comes to life pretty well with my Sony 10" powered sub.

4) USB firmware updates! Awesome!

Now, the negatives.

1) Audio sync is horrible, I find myself using the lip sync feature way more than should be necessary. Luckily, the TV does have a feature to correct this flaw.

2) PIP is not even a usable feature on this set. I watch Dish through my HDMI as my main picture source, and when using HDMI you cannot PIP with the TV's internal tuner--a major design flaw IMHO. Most people this day in age are using a set-top box as their main programming source.

All in all, the positives far outweigh the negatives of this set. I am still happy with my purchase six months after the fact. The one thing I am hoping for is a future firmware update that corrects the lip sync issues.

If you have a 242t-t11, it's a 720p/1080i tv, it does not have enough pixels to display 1080p. The status display shows the source, not how it's showing it.

I've had none of the audio sync issues, dunno.

PIP works just fine, I'm watching hd via the tuner right now with my dvd player on hdmi1 on pip. main source=tuner, sub source=hdmi1

In case no one has figured it out, many of the features can be compared via the split screen function. At least, brightness, contrast, and Black Level Extender can (native vs 6500K can't though). Here's what I did:

I calibrated the tv with a DVD player via DVE once with Black Level Extender (BLE) off and once with it on. On the DVD source, with BLE on, I had to lower brightness 5 clicks to get the same black level results as with it off but that's all the change that was needed. I transfered the settings with BLE off to the TV tuner source and the settings with BLE on to HDMI 1 source that is fed by my vip622 which has it's own OTA tuner. I went to split screen showing the same OTA (CSI: Miami) to both sources at the same time. They both showed the same level of detail in the dark areas but the one without black level extender on (TV tuner) was much more 'washed out' in the rest of the show's brighter material than that which came from the vip622 that had BLE on. On the vip622 source, I turned up the brightness until it had the same amount of 'wash out'... it took 8 clicks.

Then to make sure the different sources weren't causing the difference, I switched the settings. Again, they both gave the same detail in dark spots but this time the TV tuner looked less washed out in the brighter material... following the 'BLE on' settup. I turned the TV tuner side's brightness up so that it's level of 'wash out' matched that of the vip622. It only took 2 clicks this time.

Either way, it was clear to me that having BLE on (and calibrated for having it on) was a definite improvement. Also, the average of the two settups was 5 clicks lower on brightness with BLE on which backed up what I had to do to calibrate it on the DVD player.

The effect wasn't so much deeper blacks, but that I could have good detail in the blacks and still have a good rich 3 dimentional picture everywhere else at the same time... effectively removing some of the compromise. Contrast setting stayed in the same spot per calibration and the darkness of the blacks didn't really change, but it did add needed darkness to brighter scenes.

I'm posting this because I haven't seen BLE explained anywhere in a way that makes sense and most people just seem to leave it off... I've had this TV for months and left it off because I didn't know what it did and everyone else with the TV seemed to leave it off too.

By the way, the TV has been great... even without BLE.

Has anyone figured out the combinations of inputs aloud for PiP.
It seems that no mater what I try i can not get tuner and composite at the same time. If I try with my dvd player using composite cables doesn't show composite as an option but it shows s-video. When I switch cables and use s-video then it's not an option and now composite is. Is it just teasing me?

I just tried it myself and couldn't get it to work either. Weird.

Finally received my replacement tv. It is the 242T. Same model that I had. They made good on their promise and sent me a new tv not a refurbished one.

Hello everyone. I have purchased the Olevia 42" 242 FHD T11 and have scoured the Syntax/Olevia website and cannot get it to accept my FM number so that I might download new firmware. I have firmare 16b and am pretty sure there is a newer one out there.
Any help would be appreciated.
Also, I have it hooked through optical out to my PC into a Creative Xi-Fi Extreme Audio card, and when I use the "monitor" option I hear it but it is delayed behind the tv audio. Any help is greatly appreciated.

you can only use certain sources in certain combos, when using tuner as the main source HDMI, VGA and component are the only options. there is a chart floating around in the other threads that tells the combos.

For the audio prob i had similar issues usind digi coax or optical(but not with anolog rca cables), to fix it you need to use the "Lip Sync" menu option and adjust it so its in sync

Thank you for the firmware link. That thing is extensive. Is this a widely published link? I ask because I am sure I am not the only one who had trouble entering in the FM number on Olevia's website to get to the firmware listing.

And as far as the Lip Sync option is concerned, I tried to adjust it last night and it didn't ever quite sync up with the tv audio. Even when I adjusted the slider completely to the left side.

So, what I am believing is that on my previous Sound Blaster cards they allowed for passthrough of inputs, where I wouldn't have to "monitor" the line in but merely check mark it as the input for "recording" then it would be in sync with the tv sound. Now I don't get that with my Xi-Fi, and think that this is the key to syncing up. It seems like the Xi-Fi is processing something, which takes a ms or 2 then it ouputs sound.

But please, any help or criticism is appreciated.

Well the Link is an official Olevia link but I dont think its advertised, it has been passed through this forum in multiple "Olevia" threads, its a legit Olevia FTP website, I suggest bookmarking it.

I have an X-Fi card but have only used the analog out because my reciever is old and sucks, lol(only 1 optical in and digi coax in, its an either or setup)

I notice an issue while using my dvd player(again old and sucks), if i use analog I have no sync issues, but it I switch to the optical from the dvd player(so analog to TV from DVD and optical from dvd to reciever) I have move the lip sync to the right aprox 1/4 way to get it to sync(my default sync is set all the way to the left)

I reciently purchased a 242 tv and have some of the same viewing issues that are posted here along with other issues
White bar at the top of some channels
Viewing the guide with the cable box, channel viewing goes into the upper right corner, cancel the guide and the channel view does not go back to full screen - stays in the small area in the upper right corner.
I think a firmware upgrade will fix some of these issues, but when I enter my FM number at Olevia's site, they indicate that there is no upgrade available.

I have gone to the FTP site and I think this one would work but I wanted to know if others have upgraded their firmware, exactally which one they have used and if it solved the issues that led you to perform the upgrade.

My FM number ends with 242T_L_20
I can choose either the 242-T11 or 242-S11. (My guess is the T11) Which one can/should I use?

Another issue I am having is when I view a HD channel, the cable box (Scientific Atlanta) shows that it tries to send a signal in 1080i, the TV shows the "No Signal" for about 2 seconds (BSOD), the cable box then switches to 480i, and then the TV picks up the signal (in 480i).

How can I get the cable box and TV to work in 1080i? In the cable box settings, I have set the option to send a 1080i signal if avaialble. I have a HDMI cable connecting them. What am I missing?

Lorrie, the only thing I might be able to help you with is the "No Signal for about 2 seconds" issue. Thsi happened to me also. For some reason when I hooked it up with the regular cables instead of the HDMI cable there was no delay. I also have a Scientific Atlanta box through Time Warner.

I couldn't really tell a difference in the picture between the reg cables hook up and the HDMI cable so it was no big deal for me to just leave it that way.

Hello all, our recently purchased 242v has a very annoying green vertical bar on the right side of the screen. This bar only appears when viewing HD channels. The firmware ends with 21B. Does anyone know if it's possible to resolve this issue?

Thanks.

I just wanted to comment/ask a question regarding my 242T I purchased from Target a couple months ago.

I have watched several Blu-Ray movies via PS3 on this unit, and they looked great. No graininess like mentioned earlier in the thread.

I just bought a desktop computer with a 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 9300 in a new HP Pavilion Elite D5000T. I want to hook the computer up to the TV solely to watch HD videos. What type of connection do you all have set up (DVI -> HDMI or VGA) and do I have to play with any settings on either side to ensure a nice picture?

Thanks!

You may find that you have to deal with your tv's overscan (the picture stretches beyond the display area). The Nvidia driver can help you compensate for that, although I had trouble getting my overscan settings in the nvidia driver to survive reboots (i have the d5000t with the 9500 GS card).

Also the 9500 GS card is under powered when it came to viewing digital cable using the ATI cable card tuner. Get a faster one from HP if there is still time. I switched to a radeon 4850, whose overscan compensations settings work perfectly.

Hello all. I purchased my 242V at Office Depot's 2007 Black Friday deal. I've loved the TV since. Great price, picture, many ports, and visually attractive.

I just found this forum, so I have a few questions I'd like to throw out to the crowd.

I've not updated by TVs firmware. What type of features/changes have you noticed with upgrades? I can't find a "change log" on their site. Also, the firmware install instructions refers to an application needed to install. I can't seem to find this on their site. When I download the firmware .rar it only contains the .bin file.

I see they've posted the universal remote codes now. I couldn't wait and purchased a All-In-One universal learning remote. Oh well, I'm pretty happy with that.

Thanks for your help with the firmware.

Just for the record since it seems links have changed recently:

http://oleviaagility.dotfusion.com/firmwearfiles/237-T12/FM1-037000EGS31/MDB1_AQ_237T_S_21B.zip

That link has the updated firmware Interface Tool in the zip which seems to be universal. You will still need to find the usb driver download (which is around here someplace) and of course your own flavor of firmware.

Hello - I've had a 242T since X-mas last year and haven't had any problems for the most part until last night. I tried to turn on the television with the remote. The blue power light on the front of the TV winked out as normal...but the screen never came on. I tried switching on and off from the back as well as substituting a different powercord and using a different power outlet with no change. The TV is just dead. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem might be and solutions?

I was finally able to fix my TV. Here are detailed instructions and links for people in my situation

I stupidly flashed my olevia 242-T11 with the wrong firmware software and the TV would not even turn on. The blue LED light would still light up and my PC would still recognize a connection when i hooked it up to the USB cable connected to the TV though.

I was fortunate to find the appropriate software. The software is called MTK_DownLoad1.exe. I know this is the correct software to use for Olevia 242-T11 and Olevia 237T. I do not know if this will work with other models.

Here is the link to the MTK_DownLoad1.exe
http://rapidshare.com/files/17475900...load1.zip.html

You will also need to install the USB to Serial driver before you are able to use the MTK Download Utility. The USB Driver is located at
http://rapidshare.com/files/17475900...river.zip.html

BE SURE ONLY TO UPDATE YOUR TV WITH THE CORRECT SOFTWARE OR YOU WILL BRICK IT. I was lucky enough to recover my TV and finally able to upgrade it to the correct firmware but my TV was non functional for about a week and this has been a huge headache and if i could go back in time i would definitely not do it so please ask yourself if its even worth it risking upgrading the firmware of a TV who parent company is reorganizing after declaring bankruptcy.

If you still want to do this, here are the firmwares for all the various Olevia models.

http://olevia.ftpaccess.cc/support/OLEVIA/

I hope this helps all the people who need to recover / unbrick their Olevia TV's. If the links are down or you need any help feel free to PM me.

I found that my Time Warner Cable Box had a special audio output, ie, HDMI, Digial Dolby, etc, so I changed it to HDMI and it works fine.

Now 2 additional new issues, first, I can not control the TV volume anymore with the cable box and every time I change the volume with the TV remote the connection I am using always pops up on the right corner of the screen for about 5 seconds.

Some help in this area would be great.
Thanks

OK, so I'm having an issue with my 242t

I am only getting stereo sound output, through both optical and digital RCA out

I upgraded the firmware to 22A and still no difference. (BY the way, I got the USB to serial drivers needed from here: http://code.google.com/p/adconverter/downloads/detail?name=PL-2303%20Driver%20Installer.exe&can=2&q= )

Anyone else still having this issue? Any resolution?

I had a terrible time trying to watch LOST, since everyones voice on there is muffled anyhow.. TIA
