I'm looking for a DVD player that pays DIVX/XVID w/ AC3 and USB, of course I have a number of choices. Anyways, I was wondering which one has the best interface, and supports the longest filenames, and are easy to use by g/f and other non-technical types.

I own Pioneer DV-400V (DVD/DivX/XviD/WMV + USB) player and I'm very pleased with its user interface. And I'm "non-technical" person. :)

The pioneer dv-400 was one i was eying, i wonder how it compares to the the Phillips when it comes to long file names. also if the name is to long, does it not read it, or just display the first part of the file.

Both Pioneer DV-400V and Philips DVP-5982 do not show long file name in full and limited by only up to 13 characters (if I’m not mistaken).

I'm also considering the Pioneer.. Does it support full 1080p/720p DivX/XviD/WMV files? My old modded Xbox has a pretty hard time playing 720p content (and 1080p isn't even worth trying).

If it does support the hi-def resolutions, do the files need to be on a specific media or can it play equally from CD-R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, and USB?

Pioneer DV-400V does not support any HD formats. It is not a HD player. This player can only "upconvert" SD content to HD resolution (720p/1080i/p).
You can play files from CD as well as DVD media and from mass storage devise connected via USB port. No specific media requires.
If you have enough DivX-HD and/or WMV-HD content then I could recommend to look at the following below players.

Helios X5000
JVC ProHD (aka I-O Data) SRDVD-100U
Snazio 1350
Zensonic Z500

Thanks for the reply. Do you happen to know what the maximum resolution DivX files it would support is? Like, if I have a file that is 960x540 DivX or Xvid, do I then have to scale it down to 480p to get it to play on the DV-400V?

Sorry, I do not remember at this moment what the requirements for DivX content. I remember that for WMV file resolution is limited up to 720 x 480 pixels. I can take a look at DivX specs later and let you know then (if no one will be able to answer before me).

adolson,
I could not find any information on DivX file specifications in the manual ( if I did not overlook anything of course). I presume that any DivX files with DivX SD specifications can be played back. At least I do not have any issues with any of DivX videos I currently have in my video library.
