I have a 37" Panasonic Plasma and was wondering if anyone had opinons on the differences in the upconverting quality of the two players. If I had a 1080p I'd go with the Samsung but I only have 720p. Thanks!

They are going to be similar at all resolutions including 1080p (with display deinterlacing).

Similar - although the A2 will cost you a lot less.

I've had the A2 since Feb. and the 1400 since Friday, so I already have both and haven't too many issues with either, well none with the A2 but the 1400 is much improved with the lastest firmware.

How can HD fans put down the quality of SD DVD, but consider the A2 to be a good upscaler? There are much better upscaling players than the A2. They'll cost more, but it may be worth it if you have a large library of SD DVDs or enjoy movies that are not available in HD.

I personally find that my A1 does a better job upconverting than my 1400.

That was out of right field.

I don't recall anyone claiming there are not better upscalers than the A2. He didn't ask for the best, he asked for a specific comparison between two models.

The A2 is a good upscaler. "good" not "great". and I've owned both an A2 and a BDP1400. As well as a PS3, BDP1200, XA1, 360 addon, A3 and an XA2. I hope to have owned every player at some point.;)

Both the A2 and 1400 are comparable upscalers, good not great. If I had to pick one over the other solely on that I would lean towards the A2 mainly because of all the technical issues I've (and others have) had with the 1400, which include issues with SD DVD playback. The 1400 is no doubt a quirky little beast. The 1400 does seem to load a bit faster though.

It would be a lot more helpful if someone has seen HQV benchmarks of both players with SD material. The numbers don't lie.

Extremetech gave the A2 116/130 for HQV test disc.
That's a pretty good score.

The PS3 by comparison got 120/130.

The A2 got 65/100 for the HQV HD test disc.

THe PS3 got 100/100

I don't see them having scored the BD-P1400, sorry.

Well both must scale both axis otherwise you would get wrong aspect ratio.

But i do think the A2 is a little better then PS3, but not very much, it still is an upscaled DVD only. There is no magic process that makes it real HD.

That's my opinion, no matter what you do you can not make up for the lack of information. Upconvert ain't HD, I don't care how good the unit may be.

I give the edge to the A2 over the PS3......but I'd wager if I A/B'd em nobody could even tell the difference. :D
