hi all,

i bought an oppo 970hd last year for its upconvertiung ability. at that time i recall reading how hdmi gets in the way of upconverting, so i went all component cables and equipment with a panasonic receiver

now my friend wants the same stuff and accidentally ordered an oppo 981hd with only component.

but i cant find if the hdmi is still a problem for upconverting some dvd's.

whats the scoop on that?

I've never heard of that. What was the problem with HDMI and upconverting?

No, I think that's backwards. Or I'm missing some history. HDMI has always been favored as the upconverting connection; it's had HDCP from the start. DVI: sometimes.

Vendors no longer allow upscaling via component so most of the component questions here are from owners of displays with component-only connections who need hackable players. These are getting hard to find.

no to get off the original question, but WHY would makers block upscaling via component cables?

It makes no sense whatever. It's supposed to be an anti-piracy measure, but SD-DVD encryption was cracked years ago, so who would bother to steal a signal from a cable when the disc itself can be copied?

And the idea that the upscaled signal is more valuable that the original signal is nuts. It's like a counterfeiting law that says it is ok to make exact duplicates of $20 bills, but thatposter-sized blow-ups are illegal.
