You guys are just great. I need some updated info...

Is the concenus that dash R is still the preferred disc to archive VHS home movies for most likely format to survive innovation?

What are the favored new DVD recorders out there?

This is my primary purpose: I want to first transfer the vhs to DVD. After they are saved on DVD, I would like to someday edit them, add music etc.. I would like to make copies of these edited movies and share them with the family.

The next project would be to transfer a huge vhs collection over to DVD. Some store bought, some home recorded with commercials.

Eventually I would like to use the machine to record off of a cable box standard signal--no high def. But would like to get all the audio signals I can.

What would be the best dvd recorder for these purposes? Do I need a DVD recorder with a harddrive? How do the others handle the buffer???

If I hookup a lcd flat screen using the hdmi out of the dvd recorder can i still route the L/R audio from the recorder to an old avr?? (my parents house) It doesn't have any video inputs.

Where can I find a glossary?

Thanks in advance. I am sure these questions are not new but old info in electronics can only be a couple of months. It seems like my needs are basic but with the numerous issues with one recorder over another, I have become overwhelmed.
