View Full Version : Finish stapler for GOM fabric on walls?
I have a Bostitch combo brad nailer and finish stapler

Will these staples be wide enough for the GOM fabric, or should I plan on getting another stapler that uses wider staples?

Kevin_Wadsworth 11-29-07, 12:05 PM I just finished putting in 15000 6mm staples (about the same size as you 7/32" staples). Worked just fine.

How far apart did you space these? I'd think you would be able to get away with fewer staples if you used a wider upholstery stapler.

that is a whole lot of staples... could you give me an idea of how far apart they were spaced?
thanks,
BIGmouthinDC 11-29-07, 03:47 PM I spaced mine a staple width apart
gshipley 11-29-07, 04:02 PM I did mine every 3 inches or so.

Depending on how tight you pulled your fabric, you may develop some ripples. I am going with a staple width apart like Big and tend to pull the fabric pretty tight.
Driving_Hamster 11-29-07, 10:06 PM Like others on this thread I have used a pneumatic upholstery stapler from PorterCable (US58). No problems with it at all in with a variety of materials so far. The only thing to watch out for with this stapler is that there is NO safety on it. You pull the trigger and it fires no matter where the tip is. Treat it like a hand gun essentially.
I agree with the post that said "once you go pneumatic you will never go back".

Just a heads up when you think about ripples It's not just fabric that is flapping and not laying totally flat...Its areas of alternating tight/loose. If you have your staples at 3 inches apart you are likely to have alternating tight/loose.
The problem with alternating tight/loose is that depending on the color of the fabric and the amount and angle of light it can make the fabric take on a zebra look.
The first time you see it you will know it immediately.
The solution is to pay very close attention to your stapling technique. Watch the weave of the fabric and line up a particular thread so that it remains straight relative to edge you are stapling.
BIGmouthinDC 11-29-07, 11:22 PM Found what I was looking for. This is a Pic from a construction chronicle of one of the Premier theaters and Theater Enthusiast on this forum.
If you look near the bottom of the wall you will spot the zebra effect. Sorry Art

I bet you can't see it under normal lighting conditions, Flash photography really makes the zebras come out..
Kevin_Wadsworth 11-30-07, 08:30 AM Your pictures don’t show up, Big.
I had ½” – 3/4” between staples. A little wider than Big’s staple width. They are spaced more closely around outlets and such where I cut out a section of the fabric. Since the fabric is stretchy, there is some technique for how much to stretch so that it is tight but you don’t get pulls. So start on your least visible portion of the room.
I don't remember which model number of PC stapler I have, but mine definitely has a safety where the tip has to be depressed in order to fire.
BIGmouthinDC 11-30-07, 08:40 AM I'm looking at the pictures right now, are you at work? some firewalls block links.
judsonp 02-22-08, 01:54 PM ok, so if the PC US58 is the gun of choice, what size staples do people recommend?

I use the 3/8" staples.
