Hey guys, this is my first post. I've been around just absorbing information for a few weeks now and decided to join.

I have a 36" Sony CRT, I'm not sure about the model number, that handles 1080i signal. It has two component inputs which I currently have a PS3 and an HD-DVD player attached. When I try to play some PS3 games I have to limit the resolution to 480p because at 720p the TV just goes fuzzy and I have to restart the PS3. So I checked in my manual and it doesn't list 720p as a supported resolution. My question is this: If I have digital cable with HD service installed will I be able to watch the HD channels that are broadcast in 720p?

It depends on how the stb handles HD resolutions. In your case, you need to be able to always convert 720p to 1080i before output.

The Motorola cable stbs, when set for 1080i HD output, will convert 720p to 1080i internally. There are other cable, ota, and satellite stbs that handle it differently. Some have menus that allow the user to setup the appropriate passthrough/upconvert settings while others may only have passthrough capabilities.

I would suggest trying to determine what type of stb will be available from your provider and investigate on this forum as to how its configuration will fit into your requirements.

The lack of 720p input support places your set fairly far back in the XBR/XS/HS/HV crt line. XBR250 or XBR2 maybe?

Yeah it's about 6 years old. I have Time Warner cable and in my area they use either Motorola, Scientific Atlantic, or Pioneer boxes. I guess I'll have to wait and see what kind of box they set-up and figure everything out from there. If you have any ideas about any of those please post back. Thanks for the help.

I use the Motorola cable stb DCT-6200 and I set it for 480i output for SD and 1080i for HD.

Hopefully I'll get the Motorola and will be able to do the same.
