I think I'm finally ready to buy after doing nothing but looking at TV's for a few months I've come down to these options..

PLASMA

LG 50PC5D: 720p, 2x HDMI, PC Inputs. ($1799 with Free XBox 360 Elite)
Panasonic TH50PX75: 720p 2x HDMI, No PC. ($1999)

LCD

Sharp Aquos LC42D64U: 1080p, 3x HDMI, PC Inputs ($1499)
Sony Bravia KDLxxx3000: 720p / 1080p / 720p+120hz Options ($1499 each)

Uses: SD / DVD viewing with some HD content. Not big sports watchers, only have a Wii for a console at the moment. No real interest in Blu-Ray / HD-DVD just yet. This is in a well lit living room sitting 8-10 feet away.

What can/should I scratch off this list? If I go into the store with too many options I'll get dizzy looking at all the screens and trying to compare each to each.

(Prices are Canadian and Sale prices.. sale ends today!)

Any help would be greatly appreciated

im pretty new at all this myself, but this is what i have come to learn.

you wont notice the difference of 1080p at that distance on a 42inch screen. and in a well lit room you should go with an LCD. i would take the 720p sony. try to get a 50 inch though, since at 8-10 feet you will get good benefit from 720p.

how did i do guys for my first advice response?

Thanks for the response :]

I ended up getting a TV not even on my list, Samsung HPT5064. Liked the look of the picture in the store, we'll see how it looks when its all configured! It arrives next week (none in stock at the store =().

Excited, hopefully no problems with it!

let me know how you like it once its calibrated and you've used it a few weeks. im trying to decide between that and the panasonic th50px75u. i should be buying in the next few months. let us know if you experience any of the "floating green pixels" that some of the other samsung 44/54/64 owners have.
