View Full Version : HD-DVD or BlueRay....whats the future? were to put your money?
Honestly im stuck in a warp hole of Hi-Def..... not all movies are blue ray, not all movies are HD-dvd...some are on HD-satelite but its not that good, blue ray is expensive, so is HD...blue ray is newer HD is older...
so wats the real deal here, what should i buy, or what shouldnt i buy, or what should i wait for?
what do you guys see in the future of movie watching? I cant afford it all so I want to choose something that will give me lots of movie options both in the buying and renting department. I want a good current selection but i dont want to not have any in a 6 months...
I just want a damn HD player without feeling "not good enough" i feel like HD is an abusive girlfriend...

This is much discussed in the HD forums, particularly "HDTV Software Media Discussion": http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=114
My guess: slow growth, not displacing SD-DVD soon. The studios won't release content unless they expect to make money, and they don't yet.
If your titles are those desired by the young male demographic (who spend most of the money), you may do ok. If you are a classic film buff or interested in other obscure genres: forget about it. SD-DVD has to be "good enough" for quite a while.

Rainier2 12-01-07, 04:08 PM If too many people like me see this post, it could get ugly. :P I personally chose HD-DVD. Got a player for $99 new, and before that got the 360 add-on for $160 new. Hd-DVD was and still is by far the cheaper of the 2. Each have their exclusives, but you have to ask yourself if paying twice as much for a player is worth what the competition offers. And, since the specs are the same... I'd have to say it's not worth it to pay 2x as much for a Blu-Ray player.

Blue & Red or Red & Blue is the only way to go if you want most of the titles and you don't want to drive yourself crazy with the debate.
This thing is split but good and it doesn't look like it will be resolved anytime soon.
Sony, unfortunately, has a lock on some of the blockbusters you'd really like to own but HD is no slouch either. If one side was stuck with lousy titles this would be over quick.
You can get a good deal on an HD player now and the upconvert is sweet.
BD player prices will fall more slowly but they will if it wants more players in anyones rack but hobbyists. It's plain not affordable or attractive to the masses that will make money for this format...they have SD.
Look for some open box deals on BD. They're out there.
Software costs on both formats is equally high but not prohibitive to buy. If you buy both players and rent only, then your costs won't be bad.
IMO, the answer is going to be dual format players. The high def war is pretty much even (even Sony is saying that now publicly), and neither is going to fail in the next several years.
PooperScooper 12-01-07, 11:02 PM Both formats are going to be here for some time and there is no guarantee that HDM discs will become as prolific as SD DVDs. Please continue, if necessary, in the proper forum.
