View Full Version : NetFlix...Issues With New Releases
I might have seen a thread about this, but I did a search and could not find.
I love NetFlix and have no issues with them at all, except for Blu-ray movies over the past two months.
Since "Meet The Robinsons" and "Cars" have been released, they both have been "Very Long Wait" on my Queue. They are at the very top. "Live Free Or Die Hard" is at the top also and I have "Very Long Wait." Before "Live Free Or Die Hard" I had no other movie in my queue since the first two I mentioned have been released and I still cannot get them. I called NetFlix last week and she was like they are in high demand and told me to either rent the DVD or other movies. I seriously almost pulled her tongue out of her mouth through the phone.
Anyone else ran into these problems with these movies?
schaffer970 11-29-07, 08:22 PM I had been on a roll with getting new releases until a couple of weeks ago. To get new releases you have to have Netflix receive your returns on Monday morning. For me, that means mailing them from a certain post office on Saturday so that they are at Netflix receiving first thing Monday. Worked well until the Veterans Day holiday. That seemed to screw things up. Hopefully I can get back on schedule. It seems that if you miss out on the first day of release, it's good luck getting those high demand movies.
It also seems that if you become too good at things, all of a sudden you will get a movie from a more distant distribution center to slow things down.
PooperScooper 11-29-07, 08:29 PM scaffer970 has the right advice. Have a disc return processed on Monday. The very long wait is not limited to HDM discs. Popular SD discs are the same. You can sometime break the log jam if you skip a week or so of returning discs. If you stay at your max throttle, you don't get any breaks. And if you do a search with "Netflix" in title there's 2 pages of threads that come up. 2 or 3 talk about problems getting new releases.

bases1616 11-29-07, 08:34 PM Netflix can receive your movies on Monday and you still will not get new releases a lot of the times on release day. Especially if they are high profile movies like the ones you mentioned. You will get lucky some of the time, but most of the time you will not.
Yeah that whole return by Monday is not working for me. I always have my movies in by Monday.
clear31 11-30-07, 02:51 AM I think it depends on location. I am in ny and i always get the new releases if i do the by monday thing. Ive been a member of netflix since 2004 and been doing it since with no problems.
The Monday thing used to work for me until a couple of months ago. I think they are just not buying enough to keep up with demand for whatever reason. I have been a member of Netflix since their launch and this is the first time that I am seriously considering canceling.
Let's face the reality: Netflix is just not the place to get new releases. I've tried the Monday trick with only limited success. It pays to be patient, and catch up with some catalog titles that I haven't seen on BD yet while I wait for the new releases to catch up.
pcostabel 11-30-07, 09:31 AM I have the same issue. Never had to wait for DVDs, but since I started renting Blu-Rays my queue looks like this:
Ratatouille Very Long Wait
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Long Wait
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer Short Wait
Paprika Short Wait
Cars Very Long Wait
Mr. Brooks Short Wait
Pathfinder Short Wait
It's not just new releases. They seem to have a very limited number of Blu-Rays. Hopefully things will change once the format war is over.
Elbie
I had the same problem. Even if I just re-signed up, Meet the Robs, Live free or Die still has a very long wait. Netflix seemed didn't get enough Blu-ray discs. Their stock is diving. Keep up like this and it will go down further
robertc88 11-30-07, 09:43 AM No doubt there is a prioritization with Netflix as they only get a certain amount of these new format titles. When I updated my subcription to 3 at one time from just 1, I found I was having more luck with titles on release date.
Getting a rental back on Monday is what needs to happen also but it is secondary to their prioritization.
Edit: BTW, here is the thread I started some time ago with regards to how folks were doing with new titles on release date:

I am shocked. Superbad is shipping today.
westgate 12-03-07, 11:26 AM ive had '1408' and 'flash gordon' (both sd) at the very top of my que for 2 or 3 months at least. its still 'very long wait'. whats so great about that movie (1408) anyway:confused:, i didnt see it in a theater.
im not really complaining, cuz ive got about 150 movies in my que; plenty others coming.
I've had Netflix for so long that I only want new releases and it's been a painful last month. I just got FF4-ROSS, which miraculously went from long wait to shipped.
I just checked and POTC 3 and Superbad are shipping today, which is a nice change. Ratatouille and Ocean's 13 have been in very long wait status since they were released (and I send in my movies at the end of the week, so come Monday morning I don't have movies 'at home'.
Alot of it has to do with throttling (if you're not aware of it just google netlifx throttling). I know I've been flagged in the past as a high volume renter and from what I read, it's done on a month to month basis. So, new releases at the beginning of the month like (12/4!) work really well for me. We'll see what happens next week w/ The Song Remains The Same (bd) and Bourne (dvd).
I was very close to trying out Blockbuster, which is probably what Netflix wants since they don't maximize their profits on people like me.
robertc88 12-03-07, 12:12 PM It appears my success with new releases is coming to an end. I suppose they need to keep other subscribers happy also.
MattGuyOR 12-03-07, 01:13 PM I am shocked. Superbad is shipping today.
I hate you. Just kidding. See, you got one! :)
OldCodger73 12-03-07, 01:22 PM There's a related thread dealing with Netflix and Blockbuster in the "stickies" on the DVD board.
I'm having the same problem with new releases, both with BD and DVD. I've pretty much watched all the older movies that I've missed so now I'm using Netflix primarily for new releases and the results have been disappointing. This month I'm now evaluating whether it's worthwhile to remain with Netflix or try my local Blockbuster for new releases.
BTW, I'm on the 3 at a time plan.
anam8tr 12-03-07, 02:50 PM I was with Netflix for close to a year. When HD and BD were in the early stages it's was very easy to have your new release shipping that Monday. With the PS3 and HD players coming down in price is when Netflix starting bogging down. When a movie was announced (say Knocked up), I had that in my Q for months. I was never able to have these new releases ship on Monday and came up Very Long Wait. I had about 10-15 new releases in my Q that didn't ship, I jumped ship on Netflix, wasn't worth it anymore. I just buy the new releases now.
I hate you. Just kidding. See, you got one! :)
Yeah, well, my other two slots say "We expect to ship your next available movie by Tuesday. " :(
I can't wait to have other local renting options. I'm tired of playing games to get new releases.
my netflix queue:
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
PG-13 Action & Adventure Short Wait Blu-ray
Ocean's Thirteen
PG-13 Action & Adventure Long Wait HD DVD
We Are Marshall
PG Drama Long Wait HD DVD
Live Free or Die Hard
UR Action & Adventure Very Long Wait Blu-ray
Hot Rod
PG-13 Comedy Very Long Wait HD DVD
Get the SD Die Hard 4. The unrated cut is actually huge in that film and it upscales very nicely.
shadowrage 12-03-07, 11:47 PM Is there some sort of Big BD printing Issue. Warner has trouble getting stuff to retailers and customers. Paramount prints there HD-DVDs funny(fingerprints and wet paint, come on you have one format now).
Is it all HD media?
Big Worms 12-03-07, 11:57 PM I think so many people switched over to Netflix from BB because they heard they were so much better than now they suck. :(
That is my theory. Superbad is on Long Wait for me. Still trying to get Oceans 13 also.
robertc88 12-04-07, 09:06 AM Who knows how many copies online rental resources have for BD allocation. That probably is the biggest issue. As more folks come onboard to the format, obviously they will need to get more copies or it will really be tough to score a new title on release date!
I've had some discs in my queue for so long that I ended up canceling them due to either losing interest, or seeing the film by some other means. Netflix also seems to be slow at getting new BD and HD-DVD releases in stock in the first place.
bplewis24 12-04-07, 02:41 PM I've had Netflix for so long that I only want new releases and it's been a painful last month. I just got FF4-ROSS, which miraculously went from long wait to shipped.
I've had FF4 in my queue (at the very top) for either 2 or 3 months now. I don't know when it was released, but it feels like it's been 3 months!
Also this is the first time that the "have all of your movies returned by Monday for new releases" strategy hasn't worked for me. Superbad and POTC3 still didn't ship for me.
:(

RScottyL 12-04-07, 08:02 PM I have not really tried this with every title.....
but I did put this in my queue the day it was announced.
This came in the mail today, the day of release!
I will try to start noticing if I can get titles on release day!
DeskLaser 12-04-07, 11:56 PM I must be living in an area that's practically dead with HDM rentals, as I was just able to add Live Free or Die Hard on blu-ray on my queue and it shows as available now. The longest wait I have had show is short wait, but by the time I get a new movie sent, the waits are over and I get those sent to me next.
Edit: I believe my rentals get sent back to Gaithersburg, MD.
Cant ever get new releases either. sucks.:(
westgate 12-05-07, 12:17 AM Cant ever get new releases either. sucks.:(
i get a lot of 'em a day early. the new 'queen in montreal' hd dvd was actually shipped to me last friday, 4 days early!:D, maybe not a lot demand for it?
usafbamafan 12-05-07, 02:02 PM If you are having problems with New BluRay releases send Netflix a suggestion to stock more BluRay copies of new releases. The wait time is absolutely ridiculous for BluRays. HD-DVD is much better. Everyone complain and lets try to get this resolved. I told them I will switch back to Blockbuster if they don't improve this situation.

terrym4 12-05-07, 03:48 PM I have switched back and forth from Netflix to BB several times. My experience the past few months is that BB is currently much better than Netflix for Blu-ray new releases. I just received POTC3 and Superbad blu-ray in the mail. Plus, my local BB carried a good selection of Blu-ray, and I can usually trade in the store for blu-ray releases that are "long wait" online.
Mcklein 12-06-07, 04:10 AM The monday trick work some times not all, and I also think that either they are not buying enough copies for high profile titles or people just keep the movies for waaay too long after they watch them or either get em on tuesday and wait for the weekend to see them since they family is off on weekends?
Or maybe people like my cousin that watches the movies puts them in the car and never drop them @ the post office...i hate him....lol
Franchot 12-06-07, 05:47 AM I had "Rescue Dawn" on Blu-ray in my queue. Checking it today, without my doing it has reverted to a Standard Definition disc. I did a search and "Rescue Dawn" is not available to rent on Blu-ray. WTF.

I've had the matrix HD-DVD (first movie) at the top of my list for over a month and it still says very long wait.
I cannot even list rescue dawn, Oceans 11 or 12 in Hi def, and Oceans 13 in hidef has a very long wait.
For me it is anything hidef that seems to be a proble.

Okay, Did you send Netflix a complaint?
I assumed it was better for HD-DVD based on my very limited experience, I have gotten all my HD-DVD movies fairly quickly. We all know what happens when you ASSume.:D

I haven't sent them a complaint yet, and I didn't mean this as a complaint, although I can see that it looked that way. it was just an observation.
I am not one to quickly complain. I found out that most of the time there are more things at play than I am aware of.
I have often had netflix pics delayed and eventually received them, often about the time I think it is necessary to complain. It is just that in this case it seems to have gone longer than usual, and I really want to see it. If I soon don't get it I will send them a response.
I would just buy the Matrix If I could get only the first one or if warner released it in Blu ray. I am not trying to start anything here. it is just that I have chosen to support Blu ray and would rather buy them and rent HD-DVD.
Seeing that warner is supposedly neutral and has chosen not to release it in blu ray then I choose to wait until they do.

My feeling is if we don't let them know we are unhappy with the service level we are receiving, they will never improve it. I don't think it is acceptable to wait 3 weeks for a movie. Blockbuster is much better in this area(due to the Brick&Mortar stores) and I will switch back if they don't get their butts in gear.

I dropped in a "user suggestion" using the link provided above. Pretty quick and painless.

DIY Guy 12-07-07, 08:19 AM Well, I see I'm not the only one experiencing this shift in availabilty of new releases. I play the return game for best results, but it's been a bust since October for most titles, especially Disney.
Let me ask this question. Would you sign up for a "New Release" subscription from Netflix if it allowed you to have priority for new HDD & BD titles for a nominal monthly upcharge?

I guess I'm just spoiled but I don't think we should have to pay an extra charge to rent New Releases. What the hell am I paying for now?
Canceling today after 6 years.
farney30 12-07-07, 09:19 AM I also am unhappy because besides the fact that I never get new releases (I'm a heavy user and I feel like they definitely throttle me), I noticed that I have LOST season 3 in my Q and it will not give me a BD option, even though i know there's a BD version on the same day. What do yall do in that situation?
MarkAllan 12-07-07, 06:54 PM I've been having the same problem with BB. I think what we're seeing is more people buying HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players, while NF and BB still have the same amount of copies they first ordered. Therefore, the copies are getting more demanded, and we get longer waits.
Hopefully NF and BB up their stock soon.
cdnewmanpac 12-07-07, 08:18 PM In the last month I've gotten cars, meet the robinsons, TNMT within a few days of release and potc:world's end shipped today. However, several of them (and most of the HD DVDs I've gotten lately like transformers and bourne identity) end up shipping from another distribution center. These don't ship for a day or two, then take 2 or 3 days to arrive. The result is that I'm getting the movies I want, but the turnaround is over a week each.
My GF has BB and she never seems to get HD movies from her queue. We only get BDs by using the free instore coupons.
BTW, I really wish Netflix offered the option to choose "whatever format is available" for some movies. I've called and emailed with this suggestion. I have both HD formats and a decent upscaling player. On some movies, I just want the movie. However, I tried selecting multiple formats for a movie (put FMJ in queue bd and hd) and netflix rewarded me by shipping both at once.
texaspledge 12-08-07, 09:19 AM Also glad to see I'm not the only one having the problem. It's happens to me with HD-DVD and Blu-Ray and SD new releases. It's been picking down my queue for a few months now and at this time I just would like some recent releases.
From my point of view, I want to see new releases within a reasonable time period. I don't want to have to play games to get the either. Netflix isn't meeting that requirement at the moment. I'm about to cancel because of it.
Rakesh.S 12-08-07, 02:44 PM Get the SD Die Hard 4. The unrated cut is actually huge in that film and it upscales very nicely.
Huh? Why did he invest in bluray? To watch upconverted dvds?
B Leisle 12-08-07, 03:47 PM After using Netflix for a little over a year, I switched to Blockbuster a little over a month ago for this very reason. The first 6 months of my membership sans Blu-ray and HD DVD went fine, but once I started queuing up Blu-ray and HD DVD, my mailings for HD discs tanked. Netflix's rate of shipment to me was about the same for both formats - terrible! I rarely received any new releases within 45 days of release - Blood Diamond HD DVD at #1 in my queue for nearly 4 months was the straw that broke the camels back. I had Transformers and Blood Diamond shipped to me the first day I signed up with Blockbuster, which was right after Transformers was released.
I receive virtually every HD disc I queue up from Blockbuster, not a single problem yet, I hope it stays this way.

My situation is very similar to yours, except I haven't made any switches yet. I originally signed up for Netflix a little less than a year ago...maybe in January or February of this year. The main reason I signed up was because I purchased a PS3 and found out that netflix was probably the best way to test out blu-ray discs without buying them.
Early on, with only 2-10 movies in my queue at a time, 90% blu-ray, I would get every single BD on time. It wasn't until about 4 months ago that I would start experiencing delays. Since then I typically have 5-7 BDs at the top of my queue with "very long wait" showing, with 2-3 of those being stuck there for months. I FINALLY got Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer 3 days ago, after it had been in my queue since the week after it's release. 28 Weeks Later and Oldboy are still up there with a very long wait, and I can't imagine I'll be getting Mr Brooks, Superbad, or Cast Away any time soon. I probably have a chance at getting POTC: AWE soon because they probably bought a ton of discs, but I'm probably going to purchase that one anyway.
Brandon
Well, High School Musical 2 is sending out. Still waiting on Cars, Die Hard 4, and Meet The Robinsons. :(
ReadyHD 12-10-07, 02:16 PM I wound up buying the BD of of "Live Free and Die Hard" because of the long wait times and just bought "Superbad" for the same reason. Not a very economical way to go for new releases!
robertc88 12-10-07, 02:39 PM Haven't been getting them recently but today I noted two new releases being shipped today. I'm sure they are at least trying to do the best they can with the given number of requests. All bets off if you only have 1 as your allocation at one time. They need to keep the larger accts satisfied I'm sure.

Oh man, I feel super bad that you bought Superbad because of Netflix's slow shipping. :p After about 30 minutes, I couldn't take it any more and turned it off. Probably the worst movie I've laid eyes on in quite a while...
JoshuaL 12-11-07, 04:05 PM My guess is most of the people here experiencing long delays w/ Netflix are being 'throttled'. I've been a Netflix customer for almost 10 years now, and I've been renting Blu-Ray since last December. I have hardly ever seen delays beyond Short Wait, and when I have them at the top of the Queue they ship out anyway. Note that my usage is 6-10 movies a month. Of course, maybe I'm just getting lucky with the titles I rent not being popular ... I don't know, but currently there are 19 Blu-Ray titles in my queue and they all say 'Now' for availability.
Monty22001 12-11-07, 06:34 PM I just got this today.. What a joke! BD version:
The title: Ratatouille has been removed from your Queue. Due to circumstances beyond our control, we will no longer offer this title as part of our rental library. Please check our site periodically as the availability of this title could change.
We strive to maintain the largest selection DVDs and apologize for the inconvenience
bases1616 12-11-07, 06:41 PM usafbamafan, my HD DVD's have sat in very long wait and long wait a whole lot longer then my Blu-Ray titles have. I have read on this forum and others that HD DVD is more popular through Netflix.
Spektricide 12-11-07, 06:51 PM Same issues, top 20 movies are all blu-ray and on a very long wait. I'm probably going to cancel my account and swap to blockbuster for 6 months to a year. Maybe I can get back on the good list at Netflix after that.

Wow, you read that on the net? Must be true then.
While Netflix has never been as bad as BB online for new HD releases for me...it has taken a marked down turn over the past month or so.
I sent in a suggestion for more BDs and HD DVDs

That's odd. Why would they do that...are people experiencing problems with the disc? I know some folks had a problem with the Pixar Shorts disc, but I didn't hear much about Ratatouille.
I got Ratatouille the 3rd day it was available (very rare for me...I usually get it the day it's available or 3 months later) and it played flawlessly. Excellent disc.

Bleddyn H Williams 12-12-07, 12:57 PM That's just a default message. I got one of those when "Live Free or Die Hard" was removed from my queue, after saying "Shipping Today" for 24 hours.
I actually had "Live Free..." removed from my shipping today TWICE. I had to call NetFlix a few times, and they suggested leaving Die Hard alone for a few days while they checked my account.
After about 5 days, I put it back at the top of my queue and it shipped out without incident.
There seems to have been some sort of breakthrough at Netflix. I have about 20 BD titles on my waiting list, ranging from "Very long wait" to "short wait," and most of them have been there for months. Usually, maybe one title moves up to the "Now" status per week. But starting a couple of days ago, a number of titles began moving: about five titles moved up yesterday, and another five moved up today. Did Netflix just buy a bunch of new BD disks?
