To be more accurate, the picture completely pauses but the movie audio still goes on normally. When this happens I can't even access the PS Menu, I have to physically press and hold the power button on the front of the console to turn it off! Anyone else have this issue? I updated to the latest firmware and I had no issues with Live Free or Die Hard, which is the only other BR I've watched so far. I have an 80GB PS3 if that matters. I also had some weird artifact issues with Ratchet and Clank last night that seemed to disappear when I played the game today, I wonder if my PS3 Blu Ray drive might be the culprit. If I can rule out the disc and the movie, I think I will take my PS3 back to wal mart for an exchange.
PS. This happened twice, first it happened within 2 minutes of the movie starting. I rebooted and tried again and it happened maybe 10 minutes into the movie. After that, I gave up on it.
This may indeed be the player but I would suggest starting at cleaning the discs thourghly and re-trying

This is a brand new disc and was opened a minute before I put it into the player.

Why?
Even brand new discs have had problems that were resolved by first cleaning the discs. It cant hurt just give it a try...
What should I use to clean it?
Try soap and water
I use a plastics spray called Plexus Spray for both my HD DVD & Blu-ray discs and havent had any problems since. But a good scrubbing from plain soap and water should do it.
My own theory is they have some type of film coating on some of the new discs that need to be cleaned off properly

I have never had any issues w/ blu-ray movies on the PS3...over 50 titles, including Cars.
It's very simple, return the disc for another one. If it happens again, then something is wrong w/ your player.

You didn't state what firmware version your PS3 is sporting. 'Cars' is very Java-enabled and playback may be affected if you have not updated to at least v. 2.0. It may have something to do with the game that you can play during the film, whether or not you were playing it at the time (this is completely a guess on my part but it wouldn't surprise me either.)
I have the latest firmware

sounds like the ps3 might be defective. i've had no issues with cars or ratchet and clank- the only time i've heard of people having problems with cars, updating firmware cleared it up.

Cars has played fine on my PS3 several times, but it did lock it up last night when I was jumping through the previews trying to get to the main menu to demo for someone. Only time my PS3 has ever hiccuped since I bought it in March except when I had a Motorstorm update issue.
Worked absolutely fine on reboot though. Your problem sounds a lot worse. I'd try another copy.

I figured it out, it was a 1080p issue. My projector does not handle 1080p input properly so I just knocked it down to 1080i/720p and all is well.
