View Full Version : HD Movie Listing site?
ptrubey 11-30-07, 10:01 AM Is there a site somewhere that maintains an up to date list of upcoming HD movies being shown on all the TV stations? Now that we have so many new HD stations on DirecTV and others it would be useful to check so that we could program the PVR...
Not that I'm aware of.
Further, even if there were, it's impossible to be accurate. Most all HD channels that show movies are not 100% consistent with HD showings. In other words, a movie can be HD for one showing and SD for another.

Not to mention, certain networks (*cough* TNT) call everything they air HD and there's no way to know until the time the program airs.
ptrubey 11-30-07, 11:52 PM Well, so what? The worst that would happen is you'd record something that wasn't HD. It could easily be deleted. HDTVMagazine has this great guide that would list all upcoming HD movies with their star ratings, description, time and channel. Unfortunately, they've stopped that service. Every two weeks or so, you could scan the list for interesting movies and record a few.
Now, how the heck do people find out what movies to record with all the HD channels available?
I couldn't agree with your comments more. I have the same frustration you have, especially now that there are so many more HD channels. A simple listing of all movies over a given time period, ideally sortable or filterable by channel would be a good first step. That way you could exclude TNT or any other stations you wanted. It takes me hours of scrolling through the guide to decide what I want to record.

So you want a list of HD movies available, but don't care if they turn out to be SD upconversions?
You made it sound like you were looking for a comprehensive list. Either that's what you want or it isn't. If all you want is to find out when movies are on, there are more than plenty of TV guide listings out there. Then you can record them and delete them if they aren't actually HD.
Personally, that would piss me off if I was looking forward to something in HD and I ended up with stretched or blown up SD.
ptrubey 12-01-07, 09:48 AM OK what TV Guide listings out there give a list of upcoming movies on HD stations over the next two weeks?
If you find one please post it.
NetworkTV 12-01-07, 10:29 AM If you go to Titan TV (http://www.titantv.com) and enter your info, you can click on the checkbox at the top for "HD Only". It will also list HD shows, but it's easy enough to spot the movies in the grid. Obviously, the data is only as good as what the channels provide, though.
TV Guide.com (http://www.tvguide.com/movies-tv) actually has a section devoted to recommended movies airing each day on TV. They also have a grid for additional listings. Obviously, some listings will be for channels that are not HD (TCM, for example), but you know what channels you get in HD.
If all you really want to know is when movies are going to be on, nearly any listing site will do. Just focus on the channels that are HD.
However, if you want a list of movies that are airing in HD each day, that won't happen. The manpower in keeping the list even close to accurate would enure a short lived business model.

I don't know what everyone else does, but for me it's simple and a no brainer. I really don't need to know WEEKS ahead of time. I just advance through the guide as far as I can go and start markin' everything I need/want to record. I go to the channel websites also.....which really, is plenty of advanced information.
ptrubey 12-01-07, 02:24 PM A grid is very inefficient for searching for movies. First, movies are repeated many times so you're tripping over the same movies over and over. Then, they aren't sorted. That HDTVMagazine guide had all the movie info, including star rating, in a database format so you could sort by star rating, movie title, etc. They had it running for about two years, and obviously had automated the process. Hey, maybe I should just start the same service and charge some fee :-)

I understand your point and whatever works. I spent only 10min going through my 4 or 5 fave channels and ended up marking 16 films over the next 5 days alone. Cool...."Robocop" is coming up.....I'll bet it's the edited version.
Right now I'm really in a holding pattern of sorts. This ICESTORM is killing my chances of seeing anything at all today and maybe tomorrow. Glad I archived a few films last week. If it gets too bad, I'll have to dip into my small HD-DVD library, or maybe select a title from one of my 2,956 dvds.
thepackfan 12-17-07, 06:59 PM I couldn't agree more. There is absolutely no way to do a search and get a list of upcoming hd movies that I could find. I currently subscribe to DTV and get all premium and HD channels(about 80) I just wish there was a listing of all the movies coming up(not a guide that shows same movie coming on numerous times) so I could then go and select them.
If anyone actually knows of a way to get a list of upcoming movies in HD, it would really be appreciated.

jagouar 12-18-07, 09:39 AM media center does a really good job reading their guide actually... but it assumes the guide data is accurate.

Titan doesn't even have MGM and I'm sure they are missing other channels. I finally broke down and ordered ACCESS just for the movie list.
chris_h2 12-18-07, 12:34 PM I used zap2it for a long time to find HD movies with 3 or more stars. They discontinued that service. I posted a thread here about a year ago with a similar inquiry and did not get any useful pointers. I ended up using a friends myth tv box to do a search (movies, HD, 3 or more stars) and sort by title (so it groups multiple showings). I realize that this is not an option for most folks, but I thought that the information might be helpful. If nothing else, it just goes to show what us geeks will do to get our HD movies!
Bruce Patterson 12-18-07, 01:34 PM Agreed - this would be a useful website/feature. Blew the dust off my old TitanTV creds and found that they haven't kept up very well. Oh well...

DTV = Digital TV, as in over the air
D* = DirecTV
If anyone actually knows of a way to get a list of upcoming movies in HD, it would really be appreciated. As noted before, no such list exists.
