View Full Version : Have You Watched All of the HD-DVDs You Own?
Kricket 11-30-07, 11:49 AM hey everyone - happy friday!
i thought this would be a fun poll to see if everyone has actually watched every single hd-dvd they own - i, for one, have definitely not!
granted, i just got my first hd-dvd player a few weeks ago - and im still going through my "buy all of my favorites on hd-dvd" phase - but, hopefully, ill get through at least a couple more this weekend
so far, of the 11 titles i own, ive only managed to watch 5 - and i have 3 on pre-order as well as the 5 im supposed to receive through the mail-in promotion (which may, or may not, make it to my house by the end of 2007) - i see some people with 25, 50, 75, even 100+ titles in their collections - so im wondering if all of those titles have been actually been watched
you can let everyone know in the poll if you have or havent watched all of your films - and maybe in the comments let us know how many watched v. unwatched you have in your collection
I bought five movies during Black Friday that are still sealed and I received my five free movies from the promo, so I need to catch up and watch some HD movies!
JeffNebraska 11-30-07, 12:04 PM I don't have any in the wrapper -- because who can pass up the thrill of tearing into a new HD-DVD -- but I have several that I have only previewed and not watched all the way through yet. The problem is, with this being a new and exciting item, you feel compelled to get your favorite catalog titles, but you don't necessarily have time to see them all. It's a cruel world we live in. ;-)
I only have a few discs that I have not popped into the player at all... not even to enjoy a few key scenes. Shaun of the Dead, Unforgiven, Last Samurai, and V for Vendetta come to mind.
I also have some discs, like Serenity, the Matrix, and Transformers, that I have seen more than once, so it kind of balanaces out.
i have maybe 40 to watch and buying more.
zinc03gt 11-30-07, 12:33 PM I only have a measly 7 titles and I have watched all of them. The wife has vetoed any more purchases until post-Christmas. "You never know what Santa might bring you" is my least favorite sentence at this point. If he doesn't bring me a Matrix trilogy and a few imports I'll be pissed.
cobolisdead 11-30-07, 12:35 PM I still have around 5 or so that haven't been watched and all but one of those is still in the wrapper.
cobolisdead 11-30-07, 12:37 PM I only have a measly 7 titles and I have watched all of them. The wife has vetoed any more purchases until post-Christmas. "You never know what Santa might bring you" is my least favorite sentence at this point. If he doesn't bring me a Matrix trilogy and a few imports I'll be pissed.
I hear you! I have a forced HD DVD embargo until 12/26/2007. My fiancee is loving it too.
bflip1080 11-30-07, 12:40 PM I bought two 360 add ons during the heroes plus two free movies deal at best buy a few weeks ago. i sold the extra drive for more than i paid(10% off card) and traded the two heroes sets for $212 store credit at my local video store. right now i have 15 movies and i have only paid $32 of real money. i have TMNT in the mail plus my 5 free (whenever i get those), and i still have $60 of store credit left. And the whole point of this story is yes, i have watched all 15 of my hd-dvds. most of them twice. (i had to rewatch them after i got a new 40" samsung lcd)
GmanAVS 11-30-07, 12:41 PM have 120+ and about 40 unviewed.
alpha21 11-30-07, 12:54 PM I am yet to watch
Matrix Revolution
Lost in Translation
I just recently tried to watch 40YOV.
Constant skipping (with XA1 -> 2.0FW). Not sure if it's a FW upgrade fix, or if I have a faulty copy (from Amazon). I believe it's past the time that I can send it back. From what I did see, the EE was so excessive that I'd rather purchase a better transfer anyways!
Blumoon 11-30-07, 12:56 PM Yerp.. All 4 em...
heroes season 1
King Kong
Transformers
TMNT
Topweasel 11-30-07, 01:18 PM If you asked me a week ago I still had not watched The Warriors, but now I have watched everything and itching for more. For some reason my collection can never get big enough. I kind of hope that by dec 08 there are enough quality releases for me to hit 200. Right now I sit at about 90.
Blumoon 11-30-07, 01:22 PM Forgot one - tideland import. Worth every penny, a magical movie that is a true asset to which ever format it belongs to.
If you havent checked it out yet, I strongly recommend you do.
goater24 11-30-07, 01:27 PM I've watched half of one and fifteen are still in the wrapper. I guess I'm waiting for a new TV so I can really be blown away!
Only a few, although I own them all on DVD or have seem them before. As I just upgraded to The HD version.
I Have to finish troy DC. A much longer movie then I thought still have about a hour or so left.
I have 2 movies comming from amazon france that I've never seen. I will watch 1 tonight if I get them. Sure hope I do
Not many though, out of 125-150 HD DVDs I have perhaps 3-4 that I havent watched yet
vurbano 11-30-07, 01:37 PM I cant imagine buying more than I could watch. People buying them without watching them just want to brag about how many they have. Silly.
sswingle 11-30-07, 01:47 PM Have yet to watch 2 out of my 7. King Kong and Full Metal Jacket. Have yet to get my 5free as well.
aaronwt 11-30-07, 01:51 PM I'm not even close to having watched all my titles.
Kricket 11-30-07, 01:57 PM I cant imagine buying more than I could watch. People buying them without watching them just want to brag about how many they have. Silly.
well - i highly doubt they will sit unwatched forever - im sure a lot of people buy movies on sale to watch at some later date (i know im buying movies that i fully intend on watching)
cobolisdead 11-30-07, 02:14 PM well - i highly doubt they will sit unwatched forever - im sure a lot of people buy movies on sale to watch at some later date (i know im buying movies that i fully intend on watching)
+1
I got Blood Diamond and 12 monkeys just because I thought they were worth the risk for $14 as blind buys.
iontyre 11-30-07, 02:25 PM I own four, and have rented three. Watched the three rentals, haven't had time to watch the four purchased yet, though I have checked out special features on all but one of them.
Rented:
Transformers
V for Vendetta
The Fountain
Own:
2001: A Space Odyssey
Batman Begins
12 Monkeys
Children of Men
I havent watched all of mine, but NONE are still in the wrapper!
aaronwt 11-30-07, 02:36 PM I cant imagine buying more than I could watch. People buying them without watching them just want to brag about how many they have. Silly.
The reason I buy so many is I never know what I will be in the mood to watch. this way I have a huge selection to choose from. When I rent the titles they sit around for months because I'm not in the mood to watch them.
CPR Jose Ortiz 11-30-07, 02:37 PM Not only have I not watched many of them, but I've bought some really crappy movies like Scary Movie 4, Children of Men, The Big Lebowski and Blades of Glory.
Oh I can't believe its not butter!
*PS: If anyone wants to trade! LOL!
Mike1117 11-30-07, 02:46 PM I've been way to busy lately and I'm getting a backlog of unwatched movies, as I keep buying what interests me. I was supposed to have surgery which would have sidelined me for a week or so but now it looks like I may be able to avoid the surgery. In a strange way I was looking forward to having a week to do very little but catch up on my movies and relax. Oh well.
By the way, none of my movies are still wrapped. As soon as I get them I unwrap them to make sure they are not damaged. It's rare, but I've gotten cracked/chipped DVDs in the past.
Mike1117 11-30-07, 02:48 PM The reason I buy so many is I never know what I will be in the mood to watch. this way I have a huge selection to choose from. When I rent the titles they sit around for months because I'm not in the mood to watch them.
My collection pales in comparison to yours, but I agree that I keep buying because you never know you feel like watching.
I agree with aaronwt. I have a rather large collection of both formats and I'd say I've watched less than half of them.
sailorrhett 11-30-07, 05:10 PM I don't think I will ever see all of mine. That would require me to be in the mood to watch that %##$@ 3RD Matrix movie.
tormond 11-30-07, 05:17 PM Have about 175 movies and have watched every one except Flags of Our Fathers (which I bought for my dad to watch when he comes home for Christmas) and the Shining (bought it a week ago and havent had time to watch it when the wife/kids weren't around as my wife HATES horror movies and umm 4 year olds shouldn't watch The Shining). I went on a spree where I bought like 17 discs from Amazon and don't think I got off the couch one weekend :) . Best Experience so far was the Heroes set which my wife and I watched 2 episodes a night together till we made it through the season.
lemming75 11-30-07, 05:45 PM I would say less than 10% of mine are still sealed. But the majority of these are from BOGO deals and such. But one day, I'm sure I'll finally be in the mood watch them.
Ghosthoffa 11-30-07, 06:18 PM I haven't watched them all but they are all out of wrapper (customary in our home to eliminate all chances of returning movies...)
bygdaddy 11-30-07, 07:03 PM I haven't watched them all but they are all out of wrapper (customary in our home to eliminate all chances of returning movies...)
LOL! When I get new dvds, I like to open them up and just look at them in the cases. It's really quite odd. :)
I did finish the last 2 unwatched ones today though.
evolver 11-30-07, 07:18 PM No, but none left in the wrapper. I always check for defects or shipping damage.
user4avsforum 11-30-07, 07:25 PM No, but none left in the wrapper. I always check for defects or shipping damage.

If you had asked last week I would have said 3 unwatched. I am down to 1 unwatched. I am expecting those 5 rebate movies any day now - I got one of those cards with the *new* estimated arrival of 11/25.
Kricket 11-30-07, 07:37 PM its odd - i open my movies right before i watch them - its like getting something new, even if ive had it for a few weeks :D
but i suppose checking for defects wouldnt be such a bad idea - lol
JosephShaw 11-30-07, 07:39 PM I still have HDDVDs and BDs still in wrapper.
porkys8077 11-30-07, 08:29 PM I haven't watched Christmas Vacation,Land of the dead or Old school.
JaylisJayP 11-30-07, 09:15 PM between HD DVD and blu-ray, i probably have 75-80 movies still in the wrapper.
a3willia 11-30-07, 09:24 PM 10% of mine are still in the wrapper. I've only watched about 25% of my collection. Many are catalog titles I couldn't pass up a good price on...
theforce8686 11-30-07, 09:33 PM I still have Top Gun and Next and 3 of my 5 free ones still in the wrapper. Not enough time in the day.
cnickersonjr 11-30-07, 09:40 PM I have watched all of my movies! ?? That's why I buy them.
My library is small in comparison.
stretch35 11-30-07, 09:50 PM No, but none left in the wrapper. I always check for defects or shipping damage.
not a bad idea ..I opened up "The Incredibles" on 2disc dvd to compare to hdtv broadcast only to find I had disc 2 twice, no movie just supplements..Disney sent postage to send it all back for new copy no questions asked..I was stunned
theforce8686 11-30-07, 09:55 PM I have watched all of my movies! ?? That's why I buy them.
My library is small in comparison.
I do buy them to watch them but there are just so many that keep coming out I can't keep up.
cnickersonjr 11-30-07, 10:00 PM I do buy them to watch them but there are just so many that keep coming out I can't keep up.
Damn, 220+. Amazing. I don't have that many total disc. (DVD, HD, and BR) I only buy the movies I can stand to watch more than 2 times.
TuenMuner 11-30-07, 11:57 PM I still got about 10 titles I have yet to watch...both BD and HD combined.
invadergir 12-01-07, 12:13 AM Hell i don't know if i will ever watch them all as i keep buying more and more each week for both HD-DVD and Blu-ray. I have roughly 90 in total of both formats and 20 of them still need their first viewing
No I still have some in the wrapper!
Kricket 12-01-07, 01:58 AM alrite - im popping in the departed now - sure, its on hbo every other hour, but whats the fun in that?! :)
and btw - i just peeled the wrapper off - lol
5thDanMaster 12-01-07, 02:30 AM Heck, I just cracked open 'Heroes' for the first time tonight and watched the first 2 episodes. :D
I have had 'Babel', 'Gothika', 'Freedom Writers', and others for months now, still haven't seen them.:D
I'm buying movies now to take advantage of the Amazon 10% before it expires on Dec 31. Plus, I stocked up with the sales. A lot I still need to watch, but none of them are still in their wrapper. Like the other "kids" in this thread, it's like Christmas when they come in so I open them right away and put them on the shelf so I can admire my ever-growing collection. :D
I have yet to watch 23 of the 49 HD DVDs currently in my collection.
I too, open the discs as soon as I get them home to make sure there is no damage. I also keep all of my receipts in the boxes (standard DVD, too), just in case.
Morpheo 12-06-07, 12:55 PM I don't think I will ever see all of mine. That would require me to be in the mood to watch that %##$@ 3RD Matrix movie.
:D
...I don't own a lot for now, but I still have to watch 300, I didn't particularly like the movie, and I've watched it on SD a few weeks ago. Of course it came with the player, but there's no rush for that one.
Morpheo 12-06-07, 12:58 PM LOL! When I get new dvds, I like to open them up and just look at them in the cases. It's really quite odd. :)
I do that too. Weird. Think we should get some medication or something ?;)
ChrisW6ATV 12-06-07, 01:47 PM I have about 50 unwatched discs between both HD disc formats. I am too busy here, it seems.
superklye 12-06-07, 01:59 PM For a while there, I was just buying random movies for the sake of having more HD DVDs. I'd say I've got about 10-15 (of 55) that I have yet to watch.
aaronwt 12-06-07, 02:13 PM My titles keep growing. If this writers strike keeps up I will definitely be putting a dent in my unwatched titles this Winter.
raoul_duke 12-06-07, 02:43 PM If I watched them, then I'd have nothing to look forward too, would I? Then another couple drop through the letterbox and my backlog gets even greater. I received 5 discs today, I need counselling!!
UCFKevin 12-06-07, 03:50 PM Mine are all open, I've checked them all and skipped through them to see the quality, but honestly, this is kinda insane to admit, but I've got at least 12 HD DVDs I haven't fully watched. Maybe more?
Nope! Just eleven.
stockmonkey2000 12-06-07, 05:06 PM With by buying binge on the Blu-ray BOGO's I now have more movies that I havent watched than I have watched. I have enough to keep me busy for quite a while.
Ovation 12-06-07, 05:41 PM I haven't watched the ONE disc I have yet, but mine is a particular case. I have an A2 (it's my Christmas present but I had to provide guidance to my wife when she bought it) but apart from testing it to make sure it worked (it was bought in the US and we live in Canada), I don't "officially" get it until Christmas. I am also responsible for DVD stocking stuffers and my wife told me my daughter wants me to have Shrek III as my stocking stuffer, so I picked it up in HD DVD. It is the only one I own, but I haven't seen it yet. I expect to get a few more under the tree.
Eventually, I suspect I'll have some still in the wrapper--I still have about a dozen SD DVDs still in the wrapper (and a few used ones still unwatched), some dating over a year ago.
henryld 12-06-07, 06:00 PM Waiting on a new AVR before I watch the rest of my unwatched movies; about six. Expect several new ones as Xmas gifts; given enough hints.
DiCecco 12-06-07, 10:20 PM I have 35 hd-dvd's that I have not viewed yet and 18 Blu-ray.
mazzystar 12-06-07, 11:39 PM Nope. I still have alot of movies to watch but if I'm not in the mood or am simply too busy I usually don't get to watch.
Kannisto 12-07-07, 02:51 AM I have at least 50 still unwatched. I buy the releases that I definitely want to watch sometime but I can often only watch 2 or 3 in one week due to late working hours or when the TV is otherwise occupied etc. so the buffer has been growing gradually. I have unwrapped most of them though and checked at least a bit to see how they look.
I also enjoy having a large buffer to choose from depending on what kind of movie I want to watch at that particular time, and sometimes I only have time for a shorter one so it's nice to have various runtime options available as well :)
lgans316 12-07-07, 03:06 AM 50 still unwatched ? That's too much buddy. My wife would have killed me had I stacked up the titles like you.
AmishFury 12-07-07, 03:31 AM i still have yet to watch 4 of mine... 3 of my 5 free and one i got during amazon's b2g1 deal... i should have at least 2 of them watched today
i need to make sure i have no unwatched movies hd or otherwise (impossible considering the number of SD-DVDs i've yet to watch) by my next nights off... i plan to watch the entire harry potter collection
studiotan 12-07-07, 04:46 AM The reason I buy so many is I never know what I will be in the mood to watch. this way I have a huge selection to choose from. When I rent the titles they sit around for months because I'm not in the mood to watch them.
I'm the same way. I've probably watched less than half of the 200+ titles I own (mostly HD but about 20 BR). They are all movies I WANT to watch but I just never know what I'm going to feel like watching. I just buy the movies I want every week or so and add them to the collection.
As an example I just watched The Getaway with Steve McQueen tonight because I was really in the mood for a classic. I bought that when it came out back in Feb. It was the PERFECT movie for the mood I was in. If I didn't have it in my collection I wouldn't have had anything I really wanted to watch.
They are ALL opened though and I'll usually pop them in to check out couple of scenes before putting them on the shelf.
jason10mm 12-07-07, 08:48 AM I have plenty of unopened/unwatched HD-DVD and BR movies, but only "Letters of Iwo Jima" is a MOVIE I have not seen. For example, I know I love Bourne Identity, so while I got the HD-DVD, I have no pressing need to watch the disc as of yet.
After the initial buying surge, I am transitioning more to renting or buying new releases, both of which I watch ASAP.
Ovation 12-07-07, 02:07 PM I suspect that my "backlog" will take a while to accumulate. I have a dozen or so SD DVDs that remain unwrapped (and another dozen or so used that I've yet to watch) but the backlog only started when SD DVDs became cheap enough for impulse buys (10$ or less per movie, in my case). I doubt either Blu-ray or HD DVD discs will reach that point anytime soon, at least up here.
rboster 02-10-08, 10:40 AM bump
bigdaddychacon 02-10-08, 03:16 PM I still need to watch Apollo 13 and Smokin' Aces.
colombianlove41 02-10-08, 03:25 PM i have like 6 to watch
aaronwt 02-10-08, 03:27 PM I suspect that my "backlog" will take a while to accumulate. Most of my DVDs I purchased from 1998 to 2000 cost under $10. There were so many online deals for DVDs back then that I purchased hundreds of them.
SuperGrafx 02-10-08, 03:51 PM Absolutely.
I'm a careful consumer and only buy what I know I'll truly enjoy or watch more than once.
I've never understood how people can buy multiple discs when they're out shopping and either never get around to watching them or even forget they bought them in the first place.
Rikimaru 02-10-08, 03:57 PM Absolutely.

+1. I've watched all of my HD DVD's (and BD's) at least three times each. I do have some SD DVD's that I've had for I don't know how long that I still haven't watched!
allargon 02-10-08, 04:45 PM In fairness the ones I haven't opened, I just received last week.
The only other ones I haven't watched are A Mighty Heart, A Perfect Storm and Four Brothers. Two of those were free, and one of those was $4 on E-bay. I'm not exactly throwing money away.
raoul_duke 02-10-08, 04:48 PM My TV is p*ssing my off as the minute, so I'm waiting until I get my new one next month before cracking open the goodies.
seggers 02-10-08, 06:06 PM Nope, not all of them.
Seggers
narcopolo 02-10-08, 06:18 PM The Brave One and Elizabeth The Golden Years are still sealed. I guess those don't really count though since I just bought them last week.
I have quite a few unopened (or just unplayed) BDs.
NfoRcErX 02-10-08, 08:33 PM I personally had picked up all five harry potters in the Box Set in december and just now got through the first 3 (had never seen them to begin with). There are also some titles that I have seen, but I bought and still haven't watched on HD-DVD such as Shaun of the Dead and Knocked Up. On the BD Side I have around 7 or 8 that I need to watch as well!
I've finally started rationalizing that It's worthy of my time to watch as many movies as I can fit during my film school schedule. It's like research, right? ;)
lgans316 02-10-08, 10:11 PM I unwrap the titles I buy immediately and check it once on the players to confirm proper playback. I may take a while to watch it depending upon the time and mood. I am yet to watch 2 HD DVDs that I purchased 2 weeks back.
I have about 60 hd-dvd's and 6 blu-ray.. I've watched everything I have except for the Kingdom, blade runner and crank. But I did just get those in the past week and I've watched casino royale, war, and fifth element, purchased at the same time =)
I unwrap the titles I buy immediately and check it once on the players to confirm proper playback. I may take a while to watch it depending upon the time and mood.
I'm the exact same way. I'm still new to the format, but I have 3 HD titles, and I've only watched 1.
I think the problem with most the titles is alot of stuff was bought in a BOGO and they where from a limited selection, some that are purchased just to get it. So the collection grows of films that will be enjoyed, but not super high on the must watch list. I have watched most of my HD movies but some im saving for a rainy day. Being im in CA I will have some time to wait for those ;)
nelsona 02-10-08, 11:30 PM I voted no this morning, but tonight we watched the last one I hadn't watched yet; Letters from Iwo Jima. Was a very good movie.
ChrisW6ATV 02-11-08, 03:09 AM I think I have over 50 HD discs that I have not yet watched. All those sales a while back were hard to resist.
SomethingMore 02-11-08, 08:32 AM I don't have any that are "still in the wrapper", but yes... there are a few I haven't watched.
I have nobody to blame except myself. :(
I have been watching all my HD DVD movies, except I just got my free five. Of those, I have only had enough time to watch one so far (but all five have been unwrapped).
dad1153 02-11-08, 09:30 AM About half of my 70+ HD-DVD's are still wrapped. I'm a political news junkie so the current election cycle has tied me up more often than usual to CNN/MSNBC/Fox News coverage of the primaries instead of to the HD-DVD collection. This past weekend it took every fiber of my being to gather the strength to watch "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "What Dreams May Come" (two unwatched movies still in their shrinkwrap) instead of the news channels' coverage of the primaries that Barack swept through (and in which Huckabee kicked booty). The reward was a mind-melt at how awesome "2001" looked/sounded (not to mention it's one hell of a trip) and a pleasant time with the too-sweet-by-half-but-enjoyable "What Dreams..." (those color painting special effects hold up remarkably well for a 10-year old flick).
jcavner 02-11-08, 04:48 PM I am at least glad to see that I'm not the only one! I probably have 20 or so still in the wrapper. All these BOGO's and 14.99 deals keep me pretty behind... That and it's tough for me to find time to fire up the projector for at least 2 movies worth so I'm not wasting bulb life... I have the XBOX player in my room, but turning that on usually means COD4.
I'm with you. The BOGO and 14.99 were too hard to pass up. That and I am replacing my regular dvds w/HD or Blu Rays as they become available. I went wild after buying a new XBR and HD A30. After that picked up a Panny 10 A and just bought another Tosh A30 for the bedroom along w/a smaller XBR. I am totally out of control and know it. Have around 20 of each unopened yet and still have orders coming from Amazon and another 5 free from Toshiba. No, I am not rich, but do work 2 jobs to pay for this all.
Nucleartiger 02-14-08, 11:17 AM I bought like 22 movies during the last Amazon BOGO and haven't been able to watch through them all yet.
