View Full Version : Nielsen Prediction Thread for 12/7 (due 12/5) Read the first post!
eightninesuited 12-06-07, 02:34 PM One thing I can say is the Planet Earth was #1 on the HD DVD side of the equation and nearly was the #1 disc for the week. DH4 beat it out by about 2% in sales. Also, the sales numbers for the HD DVD were much higher than the previous week and were greater than the BD version of the disc. Usually the two are very close to each other with the HD DVD slightly ahead, but for some reason, this week was different.
Amazon has a HD DVD promotion, where if you buy a player, you can pick up 5 movies from them, and PE was one of them I think. That might be part of the reason.
eskimo2176 12-06-07, 02:35 PM I am wondering if HD DVD did the unthinkable and won a week.
Now, I am curious.
Steverhcp02 12-06-07, 02:36 PM this was the week where Oprah mentioned PE and said it was on her must have lists, right? Immediately on amazon PE standard def shot to 1 and HDDVD shot up to the top 10......
Do only HD DVD owners watch Oprah, or could there just be a bunch of housewives who wanted it in HD on their upconverting DVD player and HD TV?
dad1153 12-06-07, 02:41 PM Wow, I didn't know Oprah recommended "PE" on her TV show. Scary to think this woman could have that much power in determining who the next President of this country will be. It also scares me that many of those buying the HD-DVD version of "PE" aren't HD-DVD owners but regular folks who think the HD version will play at higher resolution on their regular DVD players while hooked-up to a big screen TV. There may be a wave of returns on "PE" HD-DVD if this turns out to be the case! :(
Oh great, now we're being fed tidbits of "surprises" and not the numbers. And, because of that, people are speculating and we're going to get the thread locked. Not fun and detrimental. Fabulous.
xradman 12-06-07, 02:43 PM Amazon has a HD DVD promotion, where if you buy a player, you can pick up 5 movies from them, and PE was one of them I think. That might be part of the reason.
Nope. PE was not one of the freebies.
JBlacklow 12-06-07, 02:43 PM  How can that possibly be??!! :eek:It's also indicative of how small HDM sales are that an unadvertised sale for a Box Set can rocket to the top of the sales charts just like that (snaps fingers). :(It wasn't unadvertised, or at least no more than "Open Season" last week. Oprah and HD DVD player freebies apparently did the trick.
dobyblue 12-06-07, 02:44 PM  How can that possibly be??!!
While browsing through BB last week I casually noted that the HD-DVD version of "PE" was selling for $69.99 (around what it sells for on amazon). Didn't see the price for the Blu-ray version. Wow I said to myself, these usually sell for $99 at retail. Didn't think much of it, but it sounds like alert shoppers on the prowl for a bargain (new HD-A2/A3 owners?) snatched "PE" HD-DVD early on. This has got to be one of the most surprising #1 victories by a stealth promo that absolutely nobody saw coming. It's also indicative of how small HDM sales are that an unadvertised sale for a Box Set can rocket to the top of the sales charts just like that (snaps fingers). :(
PE was on Oprah's Favourite Things.
The HD DVD says to average consumer (I'm a DVD in HD!)
It's no wonder it has been doing so well. Oprah said that "everyone should own this DVD"
She speaks, people listen. I'm surprised David didn't know this.
Steverhcp02 12-06-07, 02:47 PM It wasn't unadvertised, or at least no more than "Open Season" last week. Oprah and HD DVD player freebies apparently did the trick.
not true. Standard def was all that was mentioned. This is why i think the HD DVD influx is due to confusion. People seeing the same DVD symbol with HD in front if it. It doesnt make sense unless all of Oprahs viewers are only HD DVD owners that the BD wouldnt have shot up as well if people all across the board saw it.
Granted the volume of HD sales isnt very big so an extra 10,000 houswives getting PE on HD for their husbands new HD TV for football on sundays is pretty logical.
BuGsArEtAsTy 12-06-07, 02:57 PM One thing I can say is the Planet Earth was #1 on the HD DVD side of the equation and nearly was the #1 disc for the week. DH4 beat it out by about 2% in sales. Heh. Given the list of released titles this week and what you said above, it seems Winn's commentary was correct:
This week sees a slow down in titles for BluRay after last week's frenzy. Sony unleashes Paprika and I Know Who Killed Me while Bandai Visual has released Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade. In other words, a pair of badly named movie and an anime title.
HD DVD leaps on this weak lineup with a slate of comedies. Paramount has Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Hot Rod and Old School. Universal joins them with the always entertaining Rowan Atkinson in Mr. Bean's Holiday.
Seriously, are they even trying this week?
Warner comes out with a blatant attempt to cash in on their forthcoming I Am Legend with the original movie version, The Omega Man.
Anyone know HD VMD's lineup this week?
However, for clarification, do you mean that Planet Earth on HD DVD sold almost as many units as Die Hard 4? Or are you talking about revenue?
Wow, I didn't know Oprah recommended "PE" on her TV show. Scary to think this woman could have that much power in determining who the next President of this country will be. Scary to think that Oprah viewers lean to the HD DVD side. :o I can't stand Oprah's show. :p
i think its silly to assume that ALL sales are based on confusion. But its also silly to assume that teh correlation of Oprah's viewers running out to buy this product understand the difference between HD DVD players and HD DVD's on their HD TV.
Its one week of huge influx, its logical to assume the confusion. However, PE on HD DVD has been constantly outselling BD since they came out.....so no one can really argue that its ONLY beating BD based on confusion at this point.
Seriously though, I'm not convinced there is a large number of people buying the HD DVD version just because they're confused. While there may be a few, I'd be surprised if it was the bulk of the purchases. Remember, when they do a search for Planet Earth, they're going to see that 1) There is a DVD version, and 2) It's cheaper. Furthermore, Planet Earth has often done better on HD DVD historically anyway.
BTW, I know that personal anecdotes don't mean much, but I will relay mine anyway. ;) We had a student come by to help out with the garden. She is quite an earthy type, and is not a movie geek at all. She knew exactly what both Blu-ray and HD DVD were, even though she had absolutely no intention of buying either.

Nope it was two weeks ago when oprah mentioned it. I was in the hospital with my family when it was on.
nick_weasel 12-06-07, 03:02 PM Let's pleeeeeeease stay on track and not get this thread locked before the numbers come out.
BuGsArEtAsTy 12-06-07, 03:09 PM I wonder if all this means that both sides moved poor numbers this week. If so, that's not exactly great for either format, regardless of who wins.
Still, the numbers should prove interesting.
Well with PE being that close to being #1 and again in my opinion the HD side have better releases than BD this week I will say it is either a HD win or numbers like the Transformers week.
At this point I wonder why the real numbers can't be posted or on any day after the deadline for predictions. If the real numbers are know on a Thursday then just post them. This is just an idea.
markrubin 12-06-07, 03:34 PM Greetings

Greg Kettell 12-06-07, 04:42 PM I'd like to change my guess to 58:42. Just a hunch.

I'm not sure why it is surprising?
It it actually only 1 off of my guess of 59:41. :)

Well, it surprised me :P In my world Im all that matters
hehehe.
dc_pilgrim 12-06-07, 05:04 PM I'd say its surprising, but I am off by my usual 8 points.
theflux 12-06-07, 05:13 PM Off by 11 (if the DV is a truther). The past month has been a total disaster for my average.
threefirstnames 12-06-07, 05:17 PM Hope this kind of discussion is in line with the rules...if not please delete:
58:42 is an interesting number for this week. With the releases basically making this a battle of catalog titles between the formats and very few numbers-swaying deals that i'm aware of (BOGOs, giveaways, etc), this seems like one of the clearest indicators of where the market is currently at. what it says to me is:
Blu-ray's lead in software is obvious and an indicator that the PS3 is having the desired effect, at least to an extent.
HD DVD is perhaps gaining some minor momentum from increased hardware sales, as this ratio is noticeably closer than the YTD ratio.
mproper 12-06-07, 05:25 PM I don't participate in the predicting, but the numbers don't surprise me (assuming DV's "prediction" is true). First week in a long time where there were no big releases and no big sales, and mostly confirms what I think most people suspected...that all things being equal, the formats are basically neck-and-neck (with BD being slightly ahead).
Numanoid101 12-06-07, 05:47 PM Cool, my prediction was close to Dave's....I predict that is good for me.
For the record, I bought PE on HD DVD that week for my mom.
The smaller the volume of discs sold (as in a week like this where there were no sales and no big releases), the more volatile the numbers become. By that I mean, if a mere 1000 units sold can sway things a full percentage point, then depending on just dumb-luck, you could sway things 10 percentage points either direction. In other words, the numbers are too volatile to really be meaningful.
The best indicator we have of each formats relative strength can be found by comparing the ratio of sales of movies that are in both formats (in other words, Warner movies that are released on both formats). In particular, the best indicator would be to look at a fairly popular day/date release movie from Warner. That is probably the best indicator of relative strength, since you are comparing apples to apples.
Dave Vaughn 12-06-07, 05:55 PM Bag,
I agree with you about Warner being an indicator as well. But it depends on the title...some favor HD DVD, others (like 300) favor BD. BTW, in total volume this week, the numbers are quite good and I wouldn't consider it a bad week at all. It is a drop from Black Friday though, but fairly even with the week before that.
CochiseGuy 12-06-07, 05:56 PM Well, it looks like our Fearless Leader nailed it this week. Gotta quit chasing those stats. ;)
As a group, we stat chase. Look at our performance history. We go way over or under for a week or two, then miss the other way. Based on that, I'll say 61-39. Nah, too much company at that point, I like to stand alone. 62-38 looks better in terms of how many people are there, but, if I am going low, I am freaking going low. 60-40 is right out, still too much at 59. Hey, Popcorn, want some company at 58-42? No? Tough.
58-42.
ouch! well this will be my worst week, gee can i vote to not take all changes after the hint about PE selling in the top 10? :)

i see it as just the opposite, actually. if the overall volume of HDM is low enough to have significant volatility, then a higher profile release can sway the ratios considerably for that week. a week like this one with no particularly strong titles to sway the ratio presents a clearer view, as i don't believe the volume is so much lower that the volatility is significantly higher. (EDIT - looks like Dave Vaughn has confirmed my belief).

even then, it's not quite apples to apples though. sometimes those titles have different audio options, feature sets, and even prices (in the case of combos) between the two formats.

Dammit. I should've been the lemming and followed Winn. ;)
I was one of those many 61:39ers. At least I was the first one though. :) Oh well, only three off this time, which is actually closer than I expected... ie. I was expecting to be totally wrong again... although I didn't know in what direction. :D

Interesting. I was guessing mediocre numbers. What were that week's numbers?
The November 25, 2007 nxtbook (http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/questex/hom112507/index.php) seems to be inaccessible at the moment.

Dave, do you have access to historical data for the total volume of HDM sold? i'm curious how the the overall volume over the last month compares with, say, 3 months and 6 months ago. if you have that and are allowed to give some indication, would you mind? thanks.

Interesting. How significant a spike did Planet Earth see? Can you tell if similar early adopter titles like Batman Begins saw spikes?

understood. thanks!
Winn is cheating so he can win his own prize :(
I am ineligible to win my own prize. Therefore, I was cheating to see how long it would take for someone to catch on. It took less than one week. Impressive.
I asked an insider for an early tip to see how long before people caught on that I was getting an early feed. My stat chasing comment, however, is a pattern that repeatedly emerges over the course of the contest, and why I was leaning toward the low 60s before the early leaks began.
Starting next week, the closing time is moving up to, say, 4 P.M. Eastern. This should cover all leak scenarios. Also, to prevent some people trying to kill the fun altogether, I am going to ask a mod to lock the thread until Friday morning.
Oh, one more comment. Every time something happens in the thread that could get it closed down, I get one or more PMs from people afraid that this means the end of the game. That really does help me keep going.

*Outrageous guess ignored.
**One perfect pick due to outside interference
Dave Vaughn 12-06-07, 07:39 PM Winn,
Who would tell you so early? ;)
whippersnapper 12-06-07, 08:08 PM Am I the only one who thinks the "I know and I'm not telling, but you will all be surprised" sort of posts drain the fun from this endeavor? And, I'm willing to bet that someone either got the numbers on the nose or was within a percent or two. There are few (realistic) numbers that would be surprising.
And, on an unrelated note, if we get too far into how "good" or "bad" the numbers are for one format or the other, we can get a stopwatch out to see how quickly the thread is locked.Am I the only one who thinks the "I know and I'm not telling, but you will all be surprised" sort of posts drain the fun from this endeavor? No. Am I the only one who thinks folks who play "I know and I'm not telling, but you will all be surprised" are immature, childish, have small egos and are starving for attention?:)
Lee Stewart 12-06-07, 08:12 PM Wow - based on everyone's guesses - they expected a slaughter.
mikey p 12-06-07, 08:34 PM I can't get into specifics.
right.......
A bit lower than I expected, though I still don't know that I believe the theory that volume fell dramatically given the holidays. But we don't seem to have any actual information so who knows. Next week is easy given POTC3 and Superbad -- its just a question of how much those two releases change the ration in favor of Blu-Ray from the 58-42 baseline of this week.
right.......
Seriously, he can't. You have to pay Nielsen money to release anything. Even if Dave is getting the numbers from a source that has publication rights, he should not step on their toes and say too much before the official publication.

azmodien 12-06-07, 09:24 PM Wow - based on everyone's guesses - they expected a slaughter.
With Superbad and Pirates getting layered on top of Die Hard and Spiderman, I expect a slaughter next week.

I'm happy to see Star Trek: TOS maintaining 5th place. Maybe this will have legs despite its high price tag.
Arutha_conDoin 12-06-07, 10:14 PM Ouch was my guess way off or what. Oh well. I'm enjoying movies on both formats so thats all that matters.
The rankings are interesting but not unexpected, particularly on the Blu-Ray side. I'm interested in the index numbers before I predict for next week. I hope we can have those numbers from the magazine posted in this thread before the thread is locked.
Lee Stewart 12-06-07, 10:46 PM So 300 is still in the top 10 for BD but no longer for HD - well not really a surprise.
Top Gun sure is a surprise to me

Actually 300 HD DVD is there, number 9 (vs. number 5 on BD).
primetimeguy 12-06-07, 10:54 PM Actually 300 HD DVD is there, number 9 (vs. number 5 on BD).
???
The listing shows Departed at #9, with 300 not on the list.
Edit: I see now. The posted list is incorrect. Departed is listed twice. The link shows 300 should be #9.
user4avsforum 12-06-07, 11:17 PM It is amazing to see all of these expensive sets in the respective top ten lists: Planet Earth (1 & 4), Star Trek TOS-1, and the Die Hard series.
These range in price from MSRP $99-194 with Amazon prices at $66-132.
This was what was surprising.
 How can that possibly be??!!
:( New HD DVD hardware owners finally start buying some discs? More HD DVD inventory being sold at retail? Lower overall prices on display for Planet Earth? The Oprah mention? $69 is a impulse price point versus $99? More Planet Earth commercials on TV bring more top of mind awareness to consumers?
There is a change to the scoring, CochiseGuy's change should have counted as I forgot to mention what timezone I meant. His change was posted in good faith thinking it would count, and it will. here is the updated score:

Sketcha 12-06-07, 11:47 PM New HD DVD hardware owners finally start buying some discs? More HD DVD inventory being sold at retail? Lower overall prices on display for Planet Earth? The Oprah mention? $69 is a impulse price point versus $99? More Planet Earth commercials on TV bring more top of mind awareness to consumers?
Kosty burns a hole in his keyboard where the question mark used to be?
;)
theflux 12-06-07, 11:48 PM Wow - based on everyone's guesses - they expected a slaughter.
You should join us in making guesses.

The Nielsen Videoscan Overview PDF file available in this AVSForum post (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=9767608&postcount=1712) says the First Alert report is available 12:00PM Noon, Pacific Time, Wednesdays.
:)
BTW, thanks. :):)
49:51 HD DVD finally sneaks one in.
A blind squirrel may find a nut eventually, so I'll keep with this guess. :p
With no major new releases or deals, new hardware owners may finally start to have some impact.Probably the nut. :)
I've been waiting all year for accumulating HD DVD hardware sales to increase software sales over the current releases. But the BDA strategy to do anything posiible to keep the win streak going has been masterful all year.
I may very well be wrong if the BDA gives away 10.000s of copies Open Season again.:p
But what if I'm right? :D
Last defense I'll state in this thread, is that there are no blockbuster releases or deals I know of that should dominate this sales week, and its been a couple weeks since the HD DVD hardware sales, about the time for them to start buying movies. Please send any other discussions on my vote to me by PM so it doesn't derail the thread. Winn: My guess was 49:51, not 46:54. :)
No big deal, still way too optimistic for HD DVD, but not quite as crazy as the 46:54 you have me credited for in the rollup chart. ;) :D

Fixed, will repost with the new thread tomorrow.
So 300 is still in the top 10 for BD but no longer for HD - well not really a surprise.
Top Gun sure is a surprise to me
300 is packed into 2 of the hd dvd models.
The a3 and the a30 . These are the newest players on the market and with the a3 avalible at costco for as low as $170 with an hdmi cable and at other places you can find it as low in price or at $200 .
So i'd say a good portion of hd dvd buyers are getting it free.
Dave Vaughn 12-07-07, 01:09 AM I won't post any information until after you guys close out the contest to keep things fair.
Fixed, will repost with the new thread tomorrow. Thanks. :D
Great job on continuously spinning the plate and managing this thread. :)
fulcizombie 12-07-07, 02:27 AM With Superbad and Pirates getting layered on top of Die Hard and Spiderman, I expect a slaughter next week.
..and i expect sony to give hundreds of thousand free disk in the last 3 weeks of the year to keep blu-ray "winning":D
One thing is for sure: starting from the "Transformers" week, the average ratio (for the last 7 weeks) is 61-39. That's almost 1.5:1, hardly the big victory that some people are painting and definately not the end of HDDVD or the huge victory that almost everybody was expecting for the last part of 2007.

Unless you have actual sales numbers you cannot know what the percentage is. Since all you did was add the numbers up and divide them which gives no weight to sales volume.

If you average the weekly ratio you are correct. But with volume over those weeks it has to be at least 65:35, the week after Transformers YTD fell to 64 and since then YTD has gone back up 65. Also the week after Transformers SI fell to 60 and last week SI went to 62 which is the highest ever. I thought by the end of the year YTD and SI were both going to be 64:36, but the volumes will probably not be high enough for that to happen (I made a prediction chart with predicted volumes back before October and my volume predictions were at least twice possibly 4 times as much as what we have so far).
Everdog 12-07-07, 08:37 AM I was off by 10! I went from averaging being off by under 3 to over 4 1/2 in just a couple weeks. :(
I am surprised that in a quarter that BD has a huge release advantage, they again didn't reach 2:1. I guess big sales on both sides can make a real difference.
Bailey151 12-07-07, 08:45 AM At least I'm consistant................ly bad - 10 off again :D

The other day at Best Buy, I ran in to a old friend of mine that I hadn't seen in about a year. She was returning an HD DVD copy of "planet earth" for a SD DVD copy. She had picked up the wrong one.
The Oprah mention could have upped that problem considerably. Oh and they were sold out of the SD DVD version....

So with all those returns this week + returns of damaged Battlestar Galactica sets + this week's Blu-Ray releases vs. HD DVD releases (see below) I guess we can expect 85:15 numbers in favor of Blu-Ray next week. Sweet :D
HD DVD
Arctic Tale (Paramount)
Battlestar Galactica: Season One (Universal)
Queen Rock Montreal & Live Aid (Eagle Rock)
Blu-ray
20 Million Miles to Earth (Sony)
Cast Away (Fox)
Elton 60 - Live at Madison Square Garden (Universal Music)
Masters of Horror: Season One - Vol. Four (Starz)
Mr. & Mrs. Smith (Fox)
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (Buena Vista)
Queen Rock Montreal & Live Aid (Eagle Rock)
Superbad (Sony)

if there's one thing this war needs more of, it's anecdotal evidence!
phansson 12-07-07, 10:39 AM I am not saying that it happens 50% of the time, but I would bet it happens more for HD DVD than Blu Ray.
Grubert 12-07-07, 10:46 AM 67:33
That translates to
34 : (33 freebees counted as sales) : 33
Real ratio:
50:50

Has there been a real report of damaged Battlestar Galactica sets that I haven't been up on, or are you just wishing ills upon HD DVD?
Has there been a real report of damaged Battlestar Galactica sets that I haven't been up on, or are you just wishing ills upon HD DVD?
I don't know what you mean by "real" but this (see below) is what I read and I did not bother going to several sources to "verify" the information as I don't care.
From the Digital Bits:
"Also today, we're hearing reports that the packaging on Universal's new Battlestar Galactica: Season One HD-DVD doesn't hold the discs very securely, so the discs are coming loose in shipping. As a result, a few of our readers have reported problems with badly scratched discs. If you're encountering this problem yourself, visit Universal's HD-DVD website to contact them for help or replacements (look in the Support section)."
If anything i'm actually helping HD DVD supporters as they should be aware of this and open the packaging in the store in front of the clerk to verify (that way it's easier to exchange and you can avoid the clerk accusing you or your kids of having scratched the discs).

Is that the 58:42 week? Amazon had buy a HD DVD player, get 3 movies free, AND a large discount on planet earth. The movies included Top Gun and The Departed, which of course, ended up on the top 10 for HD DVD that week, since we know they would never be there otherwise.
