View Full Version : Sony To Launch High-def Video Download Service For Ps3
schaffer970 11-30-07, 01:25 PM Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. will start delivering video for its PlayStation 3 online at the beginning of next year, enabling users to watch high-resolution game-related shows on their televisions, The Nikkei learned Thursday.
The on-demand service will be available to all PS3 users who have Internet access. With the PS3 connected to the Internet, they will be able to download video and store it on the game console's hard-disk drive.
The first offering will target buyers of "Gran Turismo 5 Prologue," a racing game due out in mid-December. A documentary on automobiles produced by the British Broadcasting Corp. and video of races related to the game will be distributed for about 200 yen apiece, to be paid via credit card through SCE's game-purchasing system.

Oh yay! A documentary on the cars in Grand Turismo 5. Plus they make make you pay to watch.
Well, we knew it was coming, and I suppose this is the way they're going to support their PSN infrastructure.
PJ_Rage 11-30-07, 01:43 PM I guess nothing too long, though, with a 4gb file limit, right?
RobertR1 11-30-07, 01:47 PM Awesome! Let me pay for a "making of" video!

b.greenway 11-30-07, 02:08 PM Sony trying to kill off HDM? come on be fair!
I think by the time it's out and available, folks could have a hundred or two already invested in GT5.
I thought they were going to let your download Top Gear episodes via GTP?
This is quite possibly the most retarded thing I've ever seen Sony do. I think...
joemama127 03-20-08, 11:45 AM So I guess when this launches I'll have even slower than the already painfully slow downloads to look forward to. As much as I like the GT series...I won't be paying $40 for an extended demo (GT5 prologue) and I sure as hell won't pay a dime for a boring as hell "making of" for a videogame.
oliverjg 03-20-08, 11:54 AM there is not a snowballs chance in hell that sony will ever get a penny from me for their download service.
if the sony download service became the only place on earth that you could get movies to watch, i would buy a boat and go fishing.
i have a ps3 and i mostly love the thing for playing bd. but, imo sony has screwed up enough things lately and it is time to give somebody else a chance to make a mess (maybe apple).

Crap! next year!
I guess I will be selling my PS3 rather soon then. It makes no sense for me to keep my PS3 just for HD trailer downloads.
Actually just 1 year ago. :)
Actually 16 months ago. They started the VOD just before Thanksgiving 2006.

Actually that article was written in November 2007. So they're referring to this year since Gran Turismo Prologue comes out april 15. I personally can't wait for the high def videos. Hopefully in the future we will also be able to download full movies.

That's good then. I didn't realize this was an old thread from November.
Tes7769 03-22-08, 08:04 PM The 360's XBL Video store is already the #1 source for downloading stuff, especially the hidef stuff. They even are beating iTunes and Amazon in video downloads and likely know very well what Sony is planning. While Sony got the lead in BluRay by having the majority of studios exclusive, MS already has everybody on board as far as the XBL Video store goes and will be adding alot more in June.
Sony should have focused on making the Playstation store more of a viable and known entity before deciding to have a video download service.Again they are putting the horse before the apple cart, and are likely to screw things up.I've been in the a beta test for a very much anticipated 'add-on" to the PS3's online network(sorry, can't say exactly what but most anyone could guess) since last June and that's going to be nothing but a HUGE disappointment, so don't look for that to help the PSS/PSN out at all because that's not going to help either.
The on-demand service will be available to all PS3 users who have Internet access.
All PS3 users, or all American PS users?
Johnson Nguyen 03-27-08, 02:32 PM I would never putout my money just to watch how something is made. This is going to die out quick.
sheldonison 06-26-08, 10:39 AM Sony to start US movie service for PS3

TOKYO - Sony says it will start a movie download service for its PlayStation 3 home console this summer in the U.S.
Kazuo Hirai, who heads Sony Corp.'s video game unit, said Thursday the service will be offered in Japan and Europe at later dates, although details won't be available until next month.
Hirai said the company will strengthen its network services and further cut costs to achieve profitability in the Sony gaming business in the current fiscal year ending March 2009.
"Please expect more from our evolving PlayStation business," Hirai told reporters at the company's Tokyo headquarters.

Sony to start digitally distributing movies before they come out on DVD
Now Sony is taking the next step.
As you may know, Sony owns a movie studio. That studio is releasing a big budget Will Smith superhero movie this Summer called Hancock. When Hancock is available to buy in a few months, guess where you will first be able to buy it? Not iTunes, not even DVD, but Sony’s own digital distribution service to be launched this Fall, Sony chief executive Howard Stringer told an audience in Tokyo this morning.
This is part of Sony’s plan to make its television and video game divisions profitable once again. Its new Bravia line of televisions will be able to receive downloads via the Internet without hooking up to cable or satellite. The same will likely be true for its Playstation 3 video game console, which will roll out its digital movie download service this summer.
If it can get access to Sony movies before they are released anywhere else, that could certainly help the company move more units — as well as give it a foothold in an arena it’s already late to: Digital distribution in the living room.
Both Microsoft and Apple have a big head start on Sony in that realm with their Xbox 360 and Apple TV devices respectively. Neither of those companies owns a movie studio however.
The move is somewhat interesting though by Sony. After all, it is the key proponent of the Blu-ray high definition disc format, which only recently beat its HD DVD rival (which Microsoft had backed). Blu-ray is also a key component of the PS3, and Sony appears to be undercutting it if it starts sending movies digitally before they come to that format.
This is a big step towards legitimizing digital distribution as the wave of the future for video. The Hollywood studios are still terrified of the digital piracy that has crippled the music industry, but the shift is inevitable. It’s good to see Sony taking the lead in innovation and forward thinking once again.

What I find interesting from the overall strategy laid out by Stringer is there is a huge focus on networked content and hardware and not a word on Blu Ray! This was apparently the Q in which they won the optical HD war and yet...

mphtrilogy 06-30-08, 03:19 PM With the blip on the Netflix Website:
"Future Netflix Ready DevicesWe are working to get TV manufacturers, Blu-ray player manufacturers, and game console manufacturers to make their devices ready for instant streaming from Netflix. The first of these multi-function Netflix ready devices are likely to be available in late 2008."
I wonder if they are in heavy talks with Sony to offer another stream of service for HD Content.
Whatever the case, I won't pay much for streaming services, but if its part of an existing subscription plan like Netflix or Blockbuster I'm in.
wow this is really great a video for deaf people well its really amazing

The PS3 comes with an 80GB drive, you can get a 120GB with the 360. The majority of people aren't capable of upgrading the PS3 drive. I would also consider wireless a detriment. I've been using a gigabit network since 2001. Wireless still doesn't come any where close to the speed of my gigabit connection. The PS3 only offers b and g wireless(although my PS3 doesn't even have wireless, but I never wanted it since it is so slow). I have a 50mbs Internet connection. The wireless isn't going to come close to maximizing that connection. When downloading from the PS3 with my gigabit connection I can max out my 50mbs internet connection, wireless would be too slow. Now if they offered 802.11n that might be another story.

All it takes to change the HD in a ps3 is remove 5 screws. I think most people can do it. Its less than 4 pages in the ps3 manual.

Damn! How long does it take for you to download HD movies? I'm considering a 15mbs/15mbs Fios connection and was wondering about how that translates into real life speeds.

ROFL seriously. Thought he was talking about the surgery required for a custom non-proprietary drive on the 360 for a sec...

If a person can't pop a plastic cover like the one on their remote and unscrew 5 screws then your right, they can't upgraded their PS3 HD. Now, if they have a 1 gb "mybook" usb HD, then they only have to plug in a USB cable.
