I'm having issues with my new DVD player and I was hoping someone here could help me. My system is:

TV - SonyKDF-E55A20 55
AVR - Onkyo TX-DS484
DVD - Toshiba SD6000

Problem #1 -

I currently have my dvd player hooked up to my TV via component cables. Apparently I can't get a picture above 420i (or p, I can't remember) using these cables. In order to get the full use of my 720p TV, I guess I need a HDMI connection. Is this correct? I'm getting really frusterated with the horrible picture I get. I also have Directv HD and a picture from there is much, much better compared to the picture produced from my DVD player. Will my picture become much better simply switch to an HDMI cable from the components?

Problem #2 -

Using the same DVD player, I run a coaxial cable to the AVR for sound. I know that digital is digital but I think I'm getting a really bad sound. 2 reasons....

1 - it just sounds worse. It sounds really "noisey" if you know what I mean.
2 - Refering to the Directv again, when I'm on an HD channel and I know I'm getting a digital signal, my AVR has a red box that lights up and it says "Dolby Digital". When I have my DVD player set up, I don't get this message.

Has anyone had similar problem or any ideas on how to fix this? I'm considering getting a newer AVR but if I can get my DVD player's picture and sound quality to equal that of my Directv box I'm not sure I need to upgrade. Thanks a lot.

Yes, you need an hdmi cable to realize upconversion.

Have you tried selecting bitstream for your digital audio output in the 6000s menu?

I haven't, I'll go check out the manual. Thanks.
