I have never seen any of the movies nor have I read any of the books. I am a 28-year-old male with a 3-year-old son. Are these movies likely to appeal to me and/or my son?

View Full Version : Would I like Harry Potter on HD DVD? donJulioTV 11-30-07, 03:35 PM I have never seen any of the movies nor have I read any of the books. I have 2 kids and my wife and I love the Harry Potter movies, we are 28 years old. The 1st 2 are good, the 3rd is just amazing, and the last 2 are almost as good as the 3rd. 1st 2 are more for the kids, though I liked them just fine and have watched them numerous times with my kids, it never gets boring. The only movie series that we like more is LOTR. BMAG 11-30-07, 03:47 PM I have never seen any of the movies nor have I read any of the books. I am a 28-year-old male with a 3-year-old son. Are these movies likely to appeal to me and/or my son? I suggest you go to your local library and borrow a copy of the first Harry Potter book. The target audience of the book series is teenagers but plenty of adults have enjoyed it as well. The movies follow the books pretty closely. There are probably too many "scary" scenes for a 3-year old. If you don't mind reading spoilers a review site like "screenit.com" (http://www.screenit.com/movies/2001/harry_potter_and_the_sorcerer's_stone.html) categorizes potentially inappropriate (for your child) content. jlkeeton 11-30-07, 03:49 PM The last 2 might be a bit rough for a 3 year old. They are PG-13 and a little more 'frightening', but it really depends on the child (there isn't anything really sexually inappropriate). You may want to see how the first one goes over and proceed with more. All of my nieces and nephews grew up with the books and love the movies, but they are now 9 to 14. johnny15 11-30-07, 03:55 PM My wife and I love the movies as well as the books and we are both 27 years old. I think they may be a bit much for a 3 year old......it just really depends on the child. Some are so desensitized that he may be just fine with the movies while I could see some children being scared. Also, if you're a LOTR fan, I would think you would enjoy these movies. teachsac 11-30-07, 03:59 PM I'm a liiiiitttttllllleeee older. I have six girls 9-17, so Harry Potter has been in a mainstay in our household forever. While we find the movies very enjoyable, we all prefer the books. S~ TyTimp 11-30-07, 04:02 PM Most people love these movies. I personally find them a little slow paced for my liking. They are really well done though. I just want more stuff to happen in them. I could never get into them. You might want to rent a few first before dropping a lot of money on the box set. madshi 11-30-07, 04:31 PM Generally, if you like stuff like fairy tales, stories about good & bad witches and wizards etc then you'll likely also like Harry Potter. I'm not sure whether to recommend to read the books first or not. I've read the books first and still like the movies, although there are many good scenes missing (naturally) in the movies. Maybe it would be better to see the movies first and read the book afterwards? Overall I'd rate the books 10/10 and the movies 7/10. Of course that's just me. I do like the movies enough to have bought all five of them in glorious HD. One thing you should be aware of is that the books/movies begin like children stories but each book/movie gets darker. The first book/movie might be a bit harder to get into because there's so much new to learn about the Harry Potter universum. I enjoyed the 2nd book/movie noticably more because no more introductions and explanations are needed, so there's enough air for the real story to develop. Actually I've enjoyed every "new" book more than the previous one. With some (not all) of the movies it was rather strange: I was disappointed at first, but when watching them the 2nd time I suddenly liked them. Strange... Have seen the latest one only once yet and didn't like it much. I'll watch it again soon. Maybe I'll also like this one the 2nd time better. One thing which I like very much about the whole Harry Potter series is that the author obviously knew right from the beginning all the dirty details about all 7 books. There are things that happen in the first books which you do understand when you read them, but only much later you'll grasp the full meaning of what had happened. That's really very well done by the author. Edit: 35 years old. odysseyroc 11-30-07, 04:56 PM hold on a minute, I'm still working on my list of movies that you will like or dislike, based on your screen name. Seriously though, you really do have to see them for yourself. Even if you like other movies in the genre, Harry Potter still might not appeal to you. Go rent the first couple of movies on dvd and see how you like them. khellandros66 11-30-07, 06:44 PM I can't wait mine come in two weeks on bd but still, these will be awesome in high def and forever classic! ~Bobby IRockSoAwesome 11-30-07, 06:46 PM Personally I'm waiting until all seven movies are done before buying them in HD. I'm a collection set whore and know they'll have a great package for the full series lgans316 11-30-07, 06:48 PM HP 1 - 3 shouldn't be a big problem for Kids. Doesn't necessarily mean that 4 & 5 are ADULT movies but they are rated PG-13. ricwhite 11-30-07, 06:50 PM 73% of 28-year-old men with 3-year-old sons liked Harry Potter movies. rboster 11-30-07, 08:03 PM 73% of 28-year-old men with 3-year-old sons liked Harry Potter movies. Priceless. :D shadowrage 11-30-07, 10:08 PM First review for Order of the Pheonix up. 5star all the way. http://www.highdefdiscnews.com/?p=388 eric.exe 11-30-07, 10:26 PM All of the movies are very solid. None really stood out and amazed me, but solid efforts all around. PRO-630HD 11-30-07, 10:37 PM It's official hddvd owners are getting screwed!! No A&E documentary. Missing extras off the dvd is unacceptable. If you don't have room disc #2 it is that simple. Warner Japan and Europe knew better. This documentary better be on the 7 dic set, but I doubt it. shadowrage 12-01-07, 01:26 AM I though A&E was just reality TV. You know, Dog and Gene and Swat and police investigations. That actually have programs about art and or entertainment?? cool. Next review is up http://www.dvdtown.com/reviews/harry-potter-and-the-order-of-the-phoenix/5398 eat it Transformers. New HD PQ/AQ king has arrived(provided Warner ships these at all) homerx 12-01-07, 01:45 AM I'm 23 and have enjoyed all the movies so far. Watched them sevral times. The only movie series that we like more is LOTR. I really liked all the Harry Potter movies, but could never "get into" LOTR. I thought if I had to listen to that voice saying "My Precious" one more time, I was going to take the disc out and break the damn thing! When the third movie was over, I was one happy camper. I was ecstatic that it was OVER! I'll definitely have to watch it again though, seems everyone loves it but me!! LOTR is for me the best movies I have seen.Never can be bored of them, just a master piece.I will gurantee when they are released, it will be the most talked about in these forums.Same goes for me with HP, just love them.Im sorry but these two film push Starwars down the ladder in the most wanted for me. Tezs 12-01-07, 11:38 AM The "Harry Potter" books and movies appeal to all ages imo.In Europe they even publish seperate editions with one aimed at children/teens and the other at adults(different dusct jackets and binding is the only differences i know of).I've enjoyed the books and movies just as much as the children in the family. As someone above stated, the only thing we enjoy just a little more are "The Lord of the Rings" books/movies. |
