View Full Version : Superman Returns Blu-ray edition
Hi folks, I currently support both formats as I like to get the best of both sides of the fence; HD-DVD and Blu-ray for those wondering:p
Anyway, I have wondered if it is worth purchasing the blu-ray edition of superman returns, because I was quite dissapointed with the HD-DVD version.
If somone could post screenies of the two side by side for comparison that would be awesome!
I'm probably going to get it anyway, because like some people have already said, the combo format that is in in HD-DVD causes some suttering.
thanks

there will be no difference in PQ. They are two Identical encodes just put on different medium, one for BD and one for HD. However unless you can find the elusive limited edition BD that was shipped with one of the players the HD DVD version is a bit better. It has a TrueHD track while the BD version doesn't have lossless. (just to let you know, the stuttering discs were pretty much fixed a while ago, both disc wise and with firmware updates. )
Unfortunately, my disc still has problems. I have also read other people having the same problem and the firmware being unable to fix it.
Wasn't the new BD suppose to do the rounds once they'd run out of current stock? Or did I just imagine that?
Any official word on when the PCM version is gonna hit?

Supposedly stores are supposed to start receiving it by the end of the year. I check every single copy whenever I go to a store that has them with no luck yet.
grommet 11-30-07, 06:01 PM It'll be a while before they run out of old non-TrueHD stock in the warehouse. It's not exactly a great seller... it was a box office disappointment.
The image quality is quite good, IMHO, and reflects what I saw theatrically.

I don't know why everybody says this was a disappointment . . . it made its budget back and did turn a profit. The transfer could stand to use a few more bits thrown at it. It's a bit of a smoothie.
grommet 11-30-07, 06:42 PM The studio was betting on a "blockbuster" -- a movie that everyone wanted to see, and had constant buzz. It didn't happen. Hence, a disappointment. The sequel will amp up the action according to the director... so maybe it'll fare better.
bases1616 11-30-07, 07:23 PM If you do get the Blu-Ray version make sure it is the one with lossless audio. The original one that came out only had a DD 640Kbps. I have the HD DVD combo version and I have had no problems on my HD A1. One of the better looking and sounding HD discs out there.

I was COMPLETELY disappointed that it was yet another half-assed lex luthor story. The DC universe is filled with much more compelling villains and lex has been done to death in previous superman movies, and never well. This version was no better than the others. Lex Luthor would never, ever surround himself with fools or stupid women...I have no idea why he is repeatedly written that way.
The Justice League/Unlimited story arcs absolutely destroy the trash which was Superman Returns. Good writers and stories are out there, Hollywood just needs to pay attention.
The thing with Superman Returns is that it was supposed to be the X-Men killer since Bryan Singer was directing it. X-Men 3 was getting so much negative feedback from people on the net that they thought it would fail, which it didn't. Superman Returns flopped and even though it received praise early, after people got over the hype over Superman coming back to the big screen realized it was an average movie at best. It failed to make more than X-Men 3 which so called horrible.

Is it planned for a lossless blu ray version to come out. I managed to get a copy of the one that Pioneer comissioned with TRUE HD. I haven't opened it yet. I was wondering does anybody know if the video on the Pioneer version is any better that the original lossy blu ray version?
grommet 11-30-07, 10:19 PM The TrueHD version has an identical video encode, which is perfectly fine.

You and me both. :)

What about Kumar from Harold and Kumar as one of his henchmen! I mean seriously! What moron was the casting director? Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor was fine, but he had nothing remotely interesting to say.
And Lois and Cyclops, in their stupid little cesna finds that huge sea, kryptonite mountain, but the US Military, with all their technology is suddenly nowhere to be seen - considering the growth is not far off from the East Coast. Wha?!!!
In the end, it was simply a dumb story that I'm SHOCKED made it past the initial screenplay. I can't believe a director as talented as Bryan Singer chose to direct this garbage!
Here's the logical ending for the movie: Lex Luthor creates mountain, the US Air Force levels it to the ground along with Lex and his cronies! End of movie. I guess Lois was right afterall, with her article: "Why the world doesn't need Superman". He really would not be needed in this movie.

I believe Warner rereleased a new non-combo version like they did with many other movies.
I only mention this because the HD-DVD version is the only one worth considering if you are format neutral. At least that's the case today.

I would have to respectfully disagree.
luca_frontino 12-20-07, 09:18 AM In the scene where Luthor read a book, we get a shot of the pages: are the words readable?
Can you post a captured frame of that scene in full resolution so I can see it too?
Thank you.
Ah, how do you tell the difference of the two versions on the outside package? Different barcode? I bought a copy, still unopened, from Warner a couple months back. I wonder if they will do an exchange?
Paul Arnette 12-20-07, 11:35 AM I would have to respectfully disagree.
Definitely. There is banding out the ass in some of the underwater scenes.
grommet 12-20-07, 01:40 PM I don't own this title, only borrowed/rented so I can't review it again. When I had it, I definitely didn't study carefully... since I'm not a huge fan. Overall, as I said earlier, it seemed to represent my theatrical experience well and would rate it as good.
If there is a flawed sequence (with banding, etc.) due to poor encoding and not the source, only the encoding engineer knows what might have happened... sleeping?

The new one will say PCM and TrueHD on the back. Unfortunately, the God-awful cover will remain the same.

Has anyone actually found this at a retailer?
lgans316 12-21-07, 10:30 AM It was packaged with Pioneer ELITE Blu-ray player.
BaronVH 12-21-07, 10:44 AM To be more specific, it was packaged with the Pioneer Elite 94. I bought a copy with the TrueHD off of a member here from the 94 thread. Elsewhere I learned that it will be around May before the new pressing happens. Sorry, I cannot remember where I heard this.

May of 2008?

The reason Superman Returns repeated this mistake is the movie was not inspired by the cartoon series, it was a blatant tribute to the 1978 movie.
Dan Hitchman 12-21-07, 02:25 PM If they were going to do an all-out Superman III re-boot using the Donner/Lester stories then that's what they should have done. Not this sorta kinda homage thingy.
Lois and Supes had Z-E-R-O chemistry in Superman Returns and Lois was not very plucky. Dumb and damsel-in-distress-ish, but not plucky. Dull would be my descripter.
Margot Kidder, though not the greatest looker in the world, nailed Lois (you can also tell why they cast her when viewing the screen test clips). Christopher Reeve also nailed Kent/Superman. Powerful, yet emotionally vulnerable letting his feelings get in the way some times. Cocky, yet sure footed. It helped that Reeve was a classically trained stage actor.
Spacey was okay as Lex, but Hackman was more dynamic in the roll.
No added spruced up soundtrack is going to make me buy this turkey.

A movie that earns $200 million in the US is considered a flop now? geez. Alot of the budget issues had nothing to do with Singer or the version we got. That budget contains contract payments to previous directors who signed on to the project years ago, including Tim Burton.
robertc88 12-21-07, 04:04 PM I will never own this one even if it had Tier 0 PQ and AQ! :)
leem6453 12-21-07, 06:21 PM Being a big superman fan myself ( I saw II in the theater when I was 6 and loved it), I was excited about returns. After repeat viewings, I have to say that there is so many things about it that get under my skin. I won't go into detail because a lot of you know what I'm talking about. I just hope they get it together the next time around.
