I've looked a bit in the forum but haven't found exactly what I'm looking for. Most people talk about HDMI when it comes to upconverting but I'm looking for upconverting via component.

I'm buying this as a gift for a friend and he has a plasma tv. I think the brand of the tv is hitachi. If that information helps.

Thanks!

I wonder if that HITACHI TV does not have HDMI?
What is the reason that you need DVD player with upconversion via Component?

That's a great question. It's very possible that his tv has HDMI. However, I don't know if there is 1 or 2 inputs and I know he has a directv hidef recorder and I don't know if that is using the only input. I guess I could ask but I don't want him to get an idea of what I'm getting him.

Well I just went to hitachi's site and it looks like all of their newer models have 3 HDMI....perhaps one with HDMI would be ok.....

Any suggestions there? :)

I cannot suggest any good DVD players around $100 with upconversion feature via Component video, but for HDMI any of these below players will do excellent job in respect to picture quality and upconversion.

Pioneer DV-400V or Philips DVP-5982 or Sony DVP-NS77H

Thanks alot. That sorta confirms what I was thinking with regards to HDMI upconverting players at about $100.

I'll probably go the Pioneer route...I just can't see myself giving a philips dvd player to someone...when I think of philips I don't think quality...it may be good but I can't get past it! :)

Pioneer DV-400V very good quality player. Your friend will be pleased. I’m sure.

at the risk of cluttering up the board, can I add my PS and ask for an upconverting DVD player that is reasonably priced without needing to 'hack' it?

My HDTV only has component connections.

Thanks!

Upcoverting copy-protected SD-DVD discs over component is no longer allowed. It is a feeble effort at piracy prevention.
