I have a Rogers hd cable box, it is connected to my Sony lcd tv and also my pc which has a pvr on it. I used to be able to receive all the channels on my pc until I hooked up the Dvi to Hdmi connection. Now when I try to watch or record on my pc I get the message "Copy protection - the dvi-hdmi is blocked - press exit to cancel. If I press exit it allows that station to appear but I get the same message every time I change channels. Oddly when my television set is on , it works, but as soon as I turn my tv off I get said message. The station work with all other connections other than the dvi-hdmi one. Any help would be appreciated
A Roger's HD cable box? Never heard of that brand. We use either Scientific Atlanta or Motorola boxes. Did a cable tech setup the box for you, or did you install it yourself? Do you own the box? The reason I ask is because there could be a problem with the box, the cable card (if there is one), or the signal feeding it. Since the cable boxes "that have the cable cards built into them" came out, I have heard about this issue happening a few times with the HDMI output. Your best bet is to contact your cable company to send a refresh signal to the box, or to have a tech come out and try another box.

I am sure the OP is referring to the Canadian cableco Rogers, his provider. Without knowing more details of your situation, I am sure you are being blocked from viewing/recording on your PC because of that wonderful thing called digital copyright protection (more correctly HDCP - high definition content protection), implemented through the HDMI/DVI interface. I don't believe there is a legal solution to that issue. The best alternative would be to use analog component connections to your PC.

Yes it is Rogers Cable, the box is Scientific Atlanta. I had to go back to component cables, it works fine with those. I just thought it might be better to use Hdmi, although the picture quality is probably the same.

I have never been able to see a difference between HDMI/DVI and component, though some say they do. I think it would only start to be an issue over a significant distance between the AV components themselves. Glad to hear you are up and running again!

Thanks, what I find odd is that it works with the hdmi cables when the TV is on. Once I turn the TV off the message pops up, strange.
That's the way hdcp works, it's a handshake type signal. It has to send and recieve. What's happening is that the signal is recognizing your tv as a recording device and blocking the image. Try upgrading the firmware for your tv if you can. I had this problem with my Infocus 4805 pj and digital cable through Eastlink (Comcast). After countless hours with different techs on the phone, online, and redundant visits to my house, we even went as far as to send a .jpg image of the tags from both the pj and Motorola box to Motorola. They recreated the problem and put out a fix for it but Eastlink refused to add it due to some kind of conflict with their "On Demand" system. I'm aware this is BS so I just gave up and ran through component cables instead. Recently I upgraded to a newer pj and the hdcp error is gone. It was just a bad combination of hardware and the signal.
Hopefully, a firmware upgrade will fix your issue.
Good luck.
