Here we are, December 1st, and I have yet to see any huge offerings from either Blu-Ray or HD-DVD camps.

Not counting that $98 A-2 FIRE SALE a couple of weeks ago, do any stores have any plans on making a big HD splash this Christmas? Since both formats have been around for a while now, I would think that this would be a good time to start showing people what HD is all about.

And for christsakes--RELEASE SOME "BIG GUN" type movies already!!!!!

Godfather Trilogy
Alien Quadrilogy
Indiana Jones Trilogy
Star Wars (the original Trilogy, not the prequel crap!)
Jaws
E.T.
Back To The Future Trilogy
Jurassic Park Trilogy

Since I'm actually a dual-format supporter, I don't care which format they're on, but I do prefer Blu-Ray :D

I bet that people will buy into one format or another if these types of movies were made available!

Hope they release a Jurassic park trilogy soon

Yuppers, can't wait to hear that T-Rex roar on HI-DEF (it's a Universal movie, so it'll come out on HD-DVD only)

Hope it happens in 2008...

It's a young format with anothe format in competition with it....the best way to view it is to review the evolution of SD to understand why big name titles are limited from the classic blockbusters etc. Also, note director, studio and who holds the distribution rights....and I would rec. visiting all the past threads on titles you've mentioned, there is a ton of answers in those threads.

As far as sales, we have a sales sticky at the top of the forum for those answers.

Since Universal is exclusively releasing HD-DVD and Spielberg is a supporter of Blu-ray, I wouldn't hold my breath for any Universal Spielberg titles in 2008 - unless Universal starts releasing Blu-ray, or Spielberg backs off on his Blu-ray support.

As far as spectacular sales, the last 30 days or so have seen some pretty amazing deals - from $98 players to BOGO offers, 1/2 off, etc. Of course, this is in addition to the mail-in promotion of free movies for each format. Just speaking for myself, I bought into both formats in the last month *and* have a bunch of movies for well under $700 (when I was considering buying the upcoming Samsung Dual Format player for the "good price" of $775 - thank goodness it was delayed!)The question is whether there will be another wave of sales in the next 30 days. The year's basically over.

Since both formats have been around for a while now, I would think that this would be a good time to start showing people what HD is all about.Stores drop prices on popular items to drive up foot traffic. Given the currently installed user base, there wouldn't be a lot of foot traffic from such discounting of titles. Much like HDTVs at this point in THEIR adoption curve. It would be a better move to discount players and make up the loss by selling software at list. A retailer such as Target would drive more foot traffic to discount regular DVDs, right now, since that user base is huge. It's not about promoting HD. It's about making a buck.

Ask Fox!

They could have contributed some mega-titles. Instead, what did we really get from them this qtr?

Attach rates are going to remain low until the studios start putting realistic MSRPs on their titles. Amazon prices are almost always great, but as long as the big retailers keep asking $30 for catalog releases no less, people aren't going to start buying them up like crazy.

B&M are not going to run specials on movies much anymore, its the players they are trying to sell.

Both Blu-ray and HD camps need players to get sold, and B&M is where they are going to do it.

On the flip side, Amazon, Buy.com, etc will be the place to go for Good deals on the movies, like with BOGO type deals.

I expect another BOGO of some kind with amazon before Xmas.

As for B&M, don't count on much for movie sales beyond typical stuff. But do expect a few more player sales/features in ad's

THey gave us 4 Die Hards, The Simpsons and about 10 other solid catalog titles. Pretty good in my book.

I know that titles that Speilberg directed for Dreamworks (Saving Private Ryan, etc...) have to be released on both formats. Not sure if this rule applies to all the Universal titles he has directed.

Coulda sworn I read somewhere that Stephen Spielberg was allowed to choose HIMSELF which format his movies where going to be on and he said that they would be on both because he couldnt limit his fans that way.....at least that is with his top grossing films

It seems that all the people that are asking for "more and more" big catalogue releases haven't bothered to look at the sales numbers. The fact that a disk that was given for free with ps3 in a specific store chain was so high on the charts on Black Friday week (where disk sales were should have been huge) shows the exact state of the market right now.

We should have been happy tht we are getting most day and date releases and some decent catalogue titles. Just ask yourselves what do you think a decent catalogue release is selling nowadays on either format.

I'm sure amazon and fry's will have another BOGO. I just hope new movies are on their list as I'm pretty much bought the ones I want from their previous BOGO.

And yes, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, etc would be nice...but I hope they release those next year....something to look forward to.

Considering Spielberg is rumored to be leaving Paramount for Universal, I don't think any of his titles will be an issue. He may be a Blu-ray supporter, but if studios own his movies they can release them. How well did Close Encounters sell? 5k copies? Why release any big guns right now with suck lack-luster numbers?

The last three months have contained so many sales that I'm pretty much wiped out! My title collection has grown over six fold ! Beginning to feel like I'm propping up somebody's attach rate statistics :)!

They need to do BOGO on different movies. I'm sick of seeing the same 12 Buena Vista titles.

Well I suppose you can sell a bunch of players at $99, but has that really helped with software sales?? Perhaps a bit but time will tell.

I totally agree that unless sales are done on software and I don't mean online vendors (there are plenty of J6Ps not willing to give up account card info online), these formats will continue to lanquish as niches!
