Good Day All
I am wondering if there is any way I can tell for sure if my DVD player has Progressive Scan capability. I've got an LN-T5265F HDTV on the way and am going to try my old DVD player before buying one that upconverts. The DVD player in question is a Yamaha S-795 with a vauge owners manual. Seems all my Yamaha manuals are this way. Anyways, this DVD player has many advanced featues for it's time including Component Video Out. It does say in the manual something about how an MPEG-2 converter works and how to freeze frame on one of three different kinds of frames so one could view a frame in best resolution for screen adjustment, I-Picture P-Picture and B-Picture. So, any clue if this is really a progressive scan unit?

Doesn't seem to be. The reviews I find from googling are from 1999.

Progressive scan is usually an option. If there is no control to turn it off and on, it's not there.

Yep, and it was a whopping 700 bucks! I got it 5 years ago on ebay for 150:)
So could I expect a large image quality increase by going to a player with an up-converter?

Define "large".

DVDs contains 480i data (NTSC) which is what your player is producing. The signal is deinterlaced and scaled by your display. Would it be better to move those functions into a separate box, like a progressive scan/upconverting player? Maybe, but there is no rule. Some people try all sorts of gear and see no difference. But if you are fanatical about squeezing the last few percent of quality out of your DVDs this is the sort of thing you pursue.

I moved from a similar player to a newer one and was pleased with the upgrade.

BTW: bravo on the ClearDarkSky clock. Whiteout here this weekend: http://cleardarksky.com/c/DcrhIAkey.html?1

Thanks, I still want to make it look like a thumbnail as it does in the last post on this page: http://www.opeonthenet.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=43404&highlight=#43404
