Interesting concept....
[EDIT: Actually, given the circumstances, the studio guys are stepping pretty well... just pipe in some crowd noise and you might have somthin'. Don't they run backup POTS lines anymore? or would the delay be insufferable?]

Any delay could be rectified in Bristol, running POTS lines is still done, but they might not be working due to problems at the site.

Great stat post !!!
I'm guessin' if you added CBS & NBC (mostly HD) as well as locals/regionals (mostly not), you'd still end up with about 3/4 of available games being done in HD.
YEA !!!!!

If you look at college football as a whole I don't think it would be that high. There are still alot of games in SD on ESPn Classic ESPNU, LFS, and other channels.
coltcannon 12-01-07, 01:25 PM Facking winter storm warming here in Madison, WI. ACC championship is in SD, army/navy is still HD on CBS.
I'm watching the ACC Championship game OTA in Richmond, VA.
Anyone else have some sound stuttering?
paule123 12-01-07, 01:50 PM Watching ABC WEWS-DT Cleveland via D* MPEG4 locals on HR20 and Panny 50" 1080p plasma. No subchannels.
1. The VA Tech / BC game looks bad on all cams. Way overcompressed. The 50 yard cam wouldn't be acceptable as a 480p feed !
Our affiliate has their ABC 5 bug obnoxiously high in the 4:3 zone.
Just checked ABC OTA and the PQ is just as bad as on D*
2. Miami OH / C Michigan game on ESPN2HD via D* channel 209 looks a bit better than the game on ABC but not by much. The indoor venue and lighting might be helping a bit.
3. Tulsa / UCF game on ESPNHD via D* channel 206 looks as bad as the ABC game.
So far ESPN/ABC 3 for 3 today in the Crap PQ Dept ! Perhaps at some point they are muxing the 3 live games together and this is too much for them to handle ?

I agree, the PQ is pretty bad. Glad it's not just my station/reception/TV.
ACC game looks ok, not great. WXYZ, via Comcast. Local station is running a crawl every 30 minutes or so warning of a storm that is coming in 5 hours.
Is anyone else getting a high-pitched hum that comes and goes on this game?
If I remember correctly there were some articles back before Super Bowl 39 which was in Jacksonville about the amount of RF interference in the area of the stadium. I wonder if any of those issues are affecting this broadcast.
BradleyGreen 12-01-07, 02:24 PM Yes I am getting a high pitched hum on and off during the ACC Championship on WJXX25/Jacksonville via MPEG4 D*.
mx6bfast 12-01-07, 02:33 PM WPTY, OTA. There is a strange video stutter every 8 seconds.
somemightsay 12-01-07, 02:38 PM I agree, the PQ is pretty bad. Glad it's not just my station/reception/TV.
Same here. OTA on WFAA-8 in DFW.
Cart Cam and at least one of the handhelds are showing some interference. One hand held looks really bad. If the interference is caused by something in the area, then this crew just can't catch a break this year as they had a similar problem with interference on the high endzone camera early in the season at Michigan Stadium.
Speedskater 12-01-07, 03:31 PM Central Michigan vs. Miami (OH)
Is this the first game with a female play by play announcer?

I take it you have never watched the noon ESPN2 game before (sometimes the noon ESPN game)?

paule123 12-01-07, 04:04 PM Tuning back in to the VA Tech / BC game for the 4th quarter and the PQ seems to have improved a bit. Could be the fact that the sun is going down and/or ESPN of the ABC/ESPN/ESPN2 triplex is now playing an SD basketball game.

That would have absolutely no effect.

Not even close. Pam Ward has been doing CFB on ESPN/2 for at least 3 years in the PbP role.
When I said the ACC game early looked okay that was an overstatement. The interference issues and high pitched hum that comes and goes are really annoying.
Facking winter storm warming here in Madison, WI. ACC championship is in SD, army/navy is still HD on CBS.Maybe they should take a cue from our NBC station (same owners, QNI): their new system was doing storm cancellations in HD over golf, using about as much screen space as the ESPN/ABC ticker.
(Unfortunately it looks as if the storm has since knocked them off air, and it's been playing havoc with our ABC and PBS stations, too. Things are starting to calm down now and our stations' signals are regaining their strength.)
paule123 12-01-07, 05:14 PM UCLA / USC game looks very good ABC OTA here in Cleveland. Noticably better than the 3 early games on ABC/ESPN/ESPN2.

The sun going down might mask some of the PQ defects in the shadows, but a game on ABC should have no effect on anything on ESPN/ESPN2 or vice versa. It would be like a show on FOX affecting a show on HBO.

I was supposing all these games might go through a central facility, in say, Bristol and share a backhaul or something.
ABCTV99 12-01-07, 08:42 PM I was supposing all these games might go through a central facility, in say, Bristol and share a backhaul or something.
No. ABC games are sent directly to New York, ESPN feeds to Bristol and are integrated through two completely separate control rooms. ESPN can dial up the VYVX feed or the uplink from the remote site, to take in the feed from an ABC game, but even then they generally just take ABC's clean backhaul to air to preserve the in-game updates from New York.
Big XII game looks really good on ABC, much better then the ACC game earlier. Skycam appears to be a little soft tonight.
The West Virgina / Pitt game on ESPN HD also looks really nice, from what i have seen of it.
ccotenj 12-01-07, 09:43 PM big 12 game does look good. no pixelation, nice and sharp. good color. good turf. aq is ok, other than brent. :) can't compare it to the acc game, i didn't see any of that.
looking like there's gonna be a party in columbus tonight... :( and, shockingly enough, possibly in athens as well, given that pitt is hanging in there against wvu...
somemightsay 12-01-07, 09:58 PM WPTY, OTA. There is a strange video stutter every 8 seconds.
I'm seeing a video stutter every 2 seconds or so. OTA on WFAA-8 in DFW. It's driving me batty.
chad473 12-01-07, 09:59 PM wvu giving oregon a run for their money in the ugliest uni's contest.
ccotenj 12-01-07, 10:06 PM wvu giving oregon a run for their money in the ugliest uni's contest.
yea, those aren't pretty... oregon comes up with some brutal combinations with theirs though...
that was a BRUTAL holding call there...
chad473 12-01-07, 10:16 PM yeah pitt got screwed. some great sideline audio from wannstache though.
ccotenj 12-01-07, 10:45 PM wow. ANOTHER brutal holding call against pitt... same guy made the call too... the official looking RIGHT at the block didn't make the call...
and then no call on the next play... VERY questionable officiating in this game...
paule123 12-01-07, 11:00 PM Arizona / Arizona St on ESPN2HD via D* looks terrible, just as bad as the early games at 1pm.
ccotenj 12-01-07, 11:03 PM Arizona / Arizona St on ESPN2HD via D* looks terrible, just as bad as the early games at 1pm.
flipped over to see. it's good here (via comcast in south jersey)...
paule123 12-01-07, 11:06 PM Okla / Mizzou game on ABC OTA looks as bad as the early games. I'd love to know the reasons for the PQ going from crap to very good through the day.
Out of the 8 games I've seen today on ESPN/ESPN2/ABC, 2 were good, and 6 were crap.
Fox must be loving the results of tonights games, as some schools with smaller following are leaving the BCS title picture.
ccotenj 12-01-07, 11:14 PM well... judging from the various threads throughout the season.... i'd say the problem lies with d*...
why, i don't know... but i get consistently good pq here via comcast (with the exception of the garbage from nbc), and it seems like there's a lot more griping from people with d*... ymmv.
CougarInGA 12-01-07, 11:16 PM Arizona / Arizona St on ESPN2HD via D* looks terrible, just as bad as the early games at 1pm.
It looks bad for me too. I'm watching on Directv. It looks like a 16:9 SD picture.
paule123 12-01-07, 11:24 PM well... judging from the various threads throughout the season.... i'd say the problem lies with d*...

I understand D*'s MPEG2 feed of ESPN and ESPN2 are inferior to full bandwidth cable, but that does not explain why 2 of the 3 ABC games I saw OTA today were crap.
I have a trained eye for D*'s MPEG2 and I suspect today's problems were not D*, they were from the source. The PQ was worse than usual even for D*.
ccotenj 12-01-07, 11:26 PM hmmm... dunno... i didn't see any of the first game on abc (was watching football in real life for a change :) ), but ou/mizzou looks really good here...
ccotenj 12-01-07, 11:29 PM Fox must be loving the results of tonights games, as some schools with smaller following are leaving the BCS title picture.
yea... you gotta believe they love getting osu in there and getting the big ten viewership... now if lsu jumps up (which the 'espn bcs guru' seems to think they will), they'll get the sec viewership too...
maybe osu will show up this year...
The picutre looked a litle soft to me on the USC/UCLA game.
Maybe it is just me but it seems that the announcers are rambling on about meaningless issues when a great play ciomes up and they do not replay the play. In stead they continue to ramble on. In one particular great USC run when the runner had nothing but goal line ahead of him but was tripped up. When I was at the game they replayed it twice on the monitor. When watching it later at home they showed the play but never repeated it and continued to ramble on about something irrelivant.
