This is the new release schedule thread for 2008 for North America. Grubert the initiator of the old 07 release schedule and major news thread is stepping down, and this thread will eventually replace that thread. I will be appending approximately 1 month of lists, and deleting the older list as the months move along. Typically the updates will be once a week approximately sunday or monday night, unless some major announcments require updates sooner than that. Suggestions on improving the list are welcome, but please do not discuss or comment in this thread. Delays and pulled titles will be added to the 3rd post in this thread, currently this is not applicable.
I try to be accurate in the updates and check with multiple web sources before modifying the list, however mistakes happen please PM me if a gross mistake is found.

Except for few titles the chart looks pretty dry. Let's hope that the Studios and CE stop fighting at each other and focus on BOTH ANNOUNCING AND RELEASING (Fox!!!) their titles on time.

It disgusts me that these formats have had a year to get ready with titles to entice and attract new and current users, and this list is the best they could do!
Id like to know if the first few months of 08 will also be like the first few months of 07, ie dead when it comes to HDM releases.

Man, what a disappointing list! I almost wish I didn't see it so I would remain more optimistic about movies in HDM.

Looking at that list reminds me of the difference between walking into one of the Big Video Rental Chains stores where movies are chosen by bean-counters, and one of those wonderful few video stores you find in every city, run by a true movie enthusiast.
When you walk into the Big Video Chain store you have this bizarre frustrating feeling of being among reams and reams of videos as far as the eye can see...but having difficulty actually finding something you want to watch. Because there is simply no sense of discretion as to what is shoved on the shelf...crap...crap...crap....good one...crap...crap....crap....crap.

But you walk into the movie enthusiast store and the experience is completely the opposite. Only the great stuff, selected by the enthusiasm and discretion of a movie lover, is on the shelves. You keep seeing quality titles, titles you've never seen in other video stores but realise you'd love to view, and fascinating looking titles that you've never heard of but which look totally intriguing. Instead, you feel like there's so many movies you'd like to rent you don't know which one to grab.

I wish more actual movie enthusiasts were behind the releases of HDM.

Sigh.

2008 looks like a year that I'll have to keep my eye out for hopefully some decent imports. :(

Resident Evil
Saw 4
Man on Fire
Sunshine
The Invasion
30 days of Night
Con Air

Those are my picks!

It's a little disspaointing, but this early....I think it still looks pretty good.
I'm bummed Twister got delayed.

At this point I'm glad I didnt buy an HD DVD player yet.
But of course, Paramount hasnt announced their (30?) releases for 2008.

That could pique my interest.

While there aren't many titles I want, this is to be expected for the first few months. Even DVD releases are relatively slow.

Hopefully there will be some more announcements soon. January is probably set, but there could be a few more February titles, and certainly several more March titles. It also seems odd that there are no New Line titles on there yet. Part of it, I presume, is due to there being fall movies still in theaters and they haven't decided what they want to do with them yet.

What sucks about the catalog titles from Disney and Fox is that they should have already been released, so they could move on to others. We'll have to see what lists they trot out at CES to get our hopes up. ;)

Hi

Having been in charge of updating the release calendar threads for all of 2006 and 2007, I think it is now time to pass the baton to another forum member. I had noticed manikin had found a very elegant way to have that, so (with the permission of the moderators) I contacted him to know if he was ready to take up the job. He accepted, so now he'll be responsible for the schedule.

I wish him good luck in his endeavor and I would like all forum members to help and support him just as you did when I was in charge.

I hate to spit in the punch bowl, but the Spring 2008 release list for both formats is terrible. I don't see the value of buying into either format right now. A very small library of mediocre titles for both Blu-Ray & HD-DVD.

I think both of these formats will fail and DVD will remain the defacto video standard. Remember Laser Disc? LD was vastly superior to VHS in every way but it didn't matter. The consumer electronics industry blew a golden opportunity when they couldn't agree on an HD media standard. Now we have a small, fragmented market with a great deal of consumer uncertainty. --z

Jan. 8 will probably be the most new release I've ever picked up on one day for HDM.

The Rock
3:10 To Yuma
Man on Fire

Those are 3 absolute must owns in High Def.

Even though I'm neutral, and eventhough I do favor HD DVD, Blu is looking good.

Blu Ray's line up for January is just too good, while HD DVD looks like it is absolutely giving up.

I hope HD DVD has some major announcements soon to even things up.

Thanks for the linky!!!

FINALLY! Newhart is coming to DVD. I've wanted that series forever. While I didn't exactly love the first season, I can't wait (?) for 'The Great White Buck' episode. That and the UFO episode.

The music reminds me of much more peaceful times, living in Massachusetts.

Looks like a pretty disappointing list from both formats. I'll pick up the Sunshine, Sister Street Fighter duo, the werewolf /zombie duo, Bonnie and Clyde and maybe Into the Wild, and that's about it for the first quarter. That's not much.

Agreed. So far, there is nothing on that list I am interested in buying. I'll certainly watch a few (via Netflix), but there are no must-have movies yet.

Perhaps we'll get some good titles announced at CES. One can only hope.

Does anyone know anything about when HBO is going to release anything and what?

They went to the trouble of annoucing they would match Warner in going BD exclusive after May (before Warner pushed the date 3 weeks), but it seems silly since as far as I can tell from their own site they have released only one disc set at all, ever (The Sixth Season of the Sopranos, Part I, on both formats) and have nothing announced in the pipeline. Why announce a practice if you aren't releasing anything anyway?

I tried posting this as its own thread since I know it may not interest may of you but was told this is the only place you can ask about the release plans or strategy for either format.

Thanks.

I recieved an E-mail from some Media site I signed up for, but never order from. Anyways, they sent me an email saying that 2-Disc DVD Editions of the first four Batman movies are no longer available from Warner... Not really news, I guess they will just keep the Anthology till the Dark Knight comes out.

The E-mail also stated that Universal has discontinued the Indiana Jones Collection. Perhaps we will be hearing some announcement shortly on the new collection coming out... hopefully having a HDM release???

I'm not trying to start any bantering, but I'm hoping there might be some insider here who could provide some truth to whether or not these have both been discontinued... and what it means for possible new releases.

I think both of these formats will fail and DVD will remain the defacto video standard. Remember Laser Disc? LD was vastly superior to VHS in every way but it didn't matter.

It was also too big, you had to flip the disc, it was too expensive for J6P, and there were hardly any places that rented it, in many cities...Right up until it's death.

There's nothing that ever could have been done with LD, to make it popular.

I'm assuming you mean for the preview. As the original is a PDF.
I will see what I can do about readability.

Yeah I was refering to the preview, there are tricks to output that can be experimented on. Acdsee and IrFran view can open PDF files, then convert to GIF.

Whatever the case - It will be interesting for the next week or so to see if HD-DVD keeps what title releases on track and how fast BLU titles expand.

PS: What was the GREEN titles for? I just saw the notice for not making this public, but hope this is okay. Sometimes this info about acrobat can be helpful for others.

It has added the following BDs:
April 15: Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
May 6: The Air I Breathe
May 20: Company, Short Circuit

All Navarre titles of March 4 have been postponed till March 18.
