ive noticed during scenes especially when in 1080i that there seems to be a visible 'scan line' if you will going across the screen about every second, and now that i notice it its very annoying...i dont know how else to describe it...whats the deal? i have an hd-dvd player hooked up through hdmi at the moment but i see this with my 360 through hdmi too...so its obviously the tv...

is this just the scanning beam im seeing going across and is this whats commonly referred to as "flicker" for interlaced? it can be very distracting,it kind of has that refreshing/flickering effect you see on old CRT monitors...

If the "scan line" is a vertical ~2inch pinkish bar that scrolls left to right or right to left across the screen, this is very likely the "dreaded vertical scrolling bar". This thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?threadid=190083&highlight=vertical+bar) has discussed the problem for 5 years. I recommend you read the last few pages of the thread. The problem can be mitigated, not fixed, with a few service menu changes. A very quick mitigation is to send 720p to the set instead of 1080i for HD.

On my KV-34HS420, there is a translucent bar, about 2-3 inches thick, that sweeps across the screen, vertically, from right to left. This totally disappears if you change the output on the Toshiba HD DVD player to 720p.
Why don't you try changing the output on your player and see what happens?

Hei Guys i Have a KV36HS500, since i connected the DVI Cables,i also get those lines, on component video i never noticed them,.What you have to do is to keep the brighteness as low as possible, adjust the brightness so you have the blank screen as much dark as you can,i don't need to adjust nothing i just keep the settings on (VIVID) factory adjustment, also you can change the HD to 720P instead of 1080I,but pic will not be as crispy,But even though i didn't see as better HD pic as this on the LCD or Plasma technology,

won't that reduce the quality and defeat the purpose? and yes that basically describes what i see....

that thread looks utterly confusing..i bought this model on clearance for a good price and i highly doubt it under warranty still,it does not seem that my model is listed either,i wouldn't know where to begin...
i dont know how to access this service menu,i looked online but they all charge money for these things,i only payed 600 for the tv i ope some setting changes is all thats needed.but i could use some guidance as to what to do.

If you want to input 1080i, then do it on component, which MAY reduce the visibility of the scrolling bar. Otherwise, you WILL need to make a few service menu changes to mitigate the design flaw.

Yes, the picture will be a bit softer if you output at 720p. Originally, I had my PS3 blu-ray hooked up via component input. But, I was getting very intermittant diagonal lines. Very faint and thin and they scrolled from the bottom right corner to the top left corner, sped up and then reversed direction, then would disappear for 20 minutes to an hour!!
This intermittant issue was much less obvious on the hdmi input so I bought a manual monoprice switcher and use both HD DVD and blu-ray via hdmi.
I don't notice the vertical sweep the vast majority of the time and I find that I personally can live with it. It sucks to have this design flaw, but few CRT tube tv sets are perfect. Always seems to be some kind of minor issue.
I just take comfort in the fact that the set has a nice clear picture with no annoying scan lines and has beautiful shadow detail compared to any flat panel tv in existance.
I also bought the set as a clearance model and bought the extended warranty.

which i would be happy to try,but how do i do that,i dont have a service manual, and lets say i get into it from what ive read if iturned the HDTP to 0 in the service menu the quality will become poopy.

1 Live with the scrolling bar on HDMI.
2 Live with the possible scrolling bar on component.
3 Live with the possible degradation of using 720p only.
4 Live with the difference in picture that the HDPT=0 creates.
5 Replace your set.

Since you have tried the first option, I recommend you move to the second one and try it for a while.

i applied the hdpt change from 1 to 0 on my 34hs420 and it made it much worse the bar was much much more pronounced,u absolutely could not miss it. needless to say i changed it back....but this is very discouraging...
