Hi Everyone,
My dad knows a guy that's selling a 50" Hitachi Ultravision RPTV. The TV was supposedly top of the line in 1991 when purchased. Only issue with the set is when the TV turns on it's blurry for about 5-10 seconds, but after that everything is fine from what the guy has said.
He's looking to sell it for $300 Canadian Funds.
Any advice as to whether or not this is a good deal?
Thanks!

1991? Are you sure? I've never heard of a 16 year old HDTV.
The Ultravisions sold in the last three or so years have not been the most reliable, but if you like the picture well the price is right. Be aware you could soon have to shell out another $300 for a new lamp.

If it's 1991 vintage it's an analog only 480i tv. It does not use a lamp--back in '91 all rptvs were crt based. I'd also agree that it's obsolete.
I'd ask him for $300 CDN just to cart it out of his house! :)

1991 is awfully old for a second hand tv.
Have you checked out kijiji.ca or craigslist.net for your area?
While I browse the Toronto sections searching for 'hdtv' or 'crt hdtv', I come across numerous 3, 4, 5 year old Panasonic, Hitachi and Sony big screens for sale.
The 46"-60" televisions are priced from around $500- a ridiculously high $1500.
A motivated seller will take $300-$400. Folks have jumped on the flat panel bandwagon and want to move the old tv out.
Some folks will say, "We paid $3200 for it just 4 years ago. I've got to get at least $700 for her."
I wouldn't insult them by saying so, but, "Good luck!"
You get no warranty with a used tv. You have to do the delivery work and assume all the risk that goes with that.
Heineken77, if this is a 2001 Hitachi Ultravision that your Dad's friend has, then take a look. However, "5-10 seconds" of blurriness is not normal.

Man 1991, I could see a few years, but save your $$$, and look on craigs list or ebay for something used and newer.

If you want to save money, look for something refurbished. You'll regret buying something from 1991.
