View Full Version : Problem with my HT1000: Discolored & Distorted Image

The lamp on my NEC HT-1000 had more than the maximum hours on it, and suddenly the image looked weird; almost like one of the Photoshop filters had been applied, but dark and missing colors:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=95598&stc=1&d=1196590054

Furthermore, when I disconnected the blue channel (component input), there was no difference in the colors.

Has anyone seen this problem before? Any clue what may be wrong with the projector (it is of course out of warranty now, and I am not sure if it is worth it to spend the $$ on repair).....

Could be a colour wheel problem. It may be the timing or it's controller needing replacing. Cost may be around $600 if it's similar to the cost of similar repairs made in the UK. Contact your NEC repair center and see what they have to say.

One repair shop estimated $300, but then I also need a new lamp at $400, so total $700.
Is it worth it? Can't I get a new/better projector today for $1,000-$2,000?

There's one in the AVS classified for $400 best offer. Make him a $300 or $350 offer or even the $400 if you still like your HT1000, the new extra bulb you bought being the motivation.

But first a long shot because it does look like a color wheel problem but did you ever try cleaning the color wheel glass? HT1000s have a problem with crazing after a period of time. Use qtips and some glass cleaner, access thru the bulb area, go easy.

Yes, I cleaned the color wheel glass, it was quite dirty (white film). However, this problem is something completely different. It once came on, disappeared for a short while, and now back permanently.

Surprised that no one else has seen it before, considering all the HT1000s out there....

p.s. Didn't get the point of clipping the nails in the next post...?

I do remember several years ago someone having a similar problem with their HT1000/1100. After several attempts at home remedies they sent it in for repairs. As I recall several components were replaced. It looks like it may be time for a new projector.

I tried to contact the seller of the projector several times, but have problems getting any response (e.g. regarding the condition of the projector). I am beginning to suspect that there may be something wrong with it .

I have seen new HT-1000s selling for $1200 and that is of course with a brand new lamp. Thus, the cost of a used HT-1000 should be about $350 max:

50% of ($1200-Lamp($400))=$350 since a used projector probably need a new lamp, and I figure that I would pay max 50% of a projector used for 4-5 years. In particular, since they seem to brake easily due to the high temperature.

I like the HT-1000, and for me getting a used projector may be a good way to have some spare parts on hand for the future; can pick from either projector.....

Anyway, does anyone know where I could find a used HT-1000 for $300-$350 (depending on condition)? Seems to be nothing available on E-bay....

I may have my ht1000, excellent condition.. up for sale very soon, upgrading to a Sony Black Pearl.... I am the original owner non smoking house was used in lower room of house that stays cool. Also have always had a filter on lens assembly to give better contrast per guitarman. Let me check on hours on bulb but cannot be more then 1200, location is in Colorado so very low humidity if that matters?

I have the original carrying bag but would have to look for box not sure if I have that still.... also have ceiling mount.

pm me and I can let you know when Sony is being purchased...

I have the similar problem with my NEC HT1000. After 30 mins of watching the movie picture starts looking as its shown in the message of rbrande 12/02/07 and then it totally disappears. I have already replaced a Brand new lamp. I want to clean the color wheel but I can't open the pj. I opened all the screws and was able to lift the front half of the pj but was unable to open from back. Can someone please provide me the manual of it for disassembling the HT1000? Thanks.

Make sure you clean any air filters as this kind of picture distortion might be due to component overheating, if my experience once with an Optoma H-79 is any guide.

And I'm sure guitarman has clipped his fingernails since that "twisted" pic was taken.

rbrande. Regarding your search. I recently bought an RS1 off the AVS classifieds and have an NEC HT1100 prepped for ebay posting. The unit has been well taken care of an looks/operates like new. Wheel has recently been cleaned and the image is still absolutely outstanding. My original HT1000 had the image issue you show and NEC ended up repairing (Replacing components). I have everything - Box, Case, manuals, Anom. Lens (if needed). Current bulb has life left but a new one would be best. Unit was ceiling mounted and pampered. If interested let me know and we can discuss.

My HT1000 just picked up this same problem. I can't get the back of the case open either, how do you do it? I missed the cut your finger nails rib, hey my handle is guitarman that's my right hand for finger picking acoustic guitars, noting like it.

It might be a heating problem because it starts out fine then after 5 mins it goes to that posturization look.

I had this problem and showed pictures of it on this forum. Look in the archives for HT1000 posts by JackB. May have been a bad power supply but I can't remember. Nevertheless, my recommendation is to forget the HT1000. Most any of the sub 1000 projectors are better in my opinion. I replaced my HT1000 with a Sharp 12000 MKII. Night and day difference. These can be had on eBay for <$1K.

It's wierd the HT was working fine I just moved it to my home theater room to test and it started doing the mosaic thing. I bought it for fun in a garage set up with a 4.3 screen. I have a JVC RS2 in the home room so I'm good there. Just would like to know how to open it maybe just some connections came loose.
Anyone know how to open the case?

Guitarman,
PM me with your email and I'll send you the "Method of Disassembly" manual. Page 8-3 explains "Removal of the Top Cover" as step 1.

Thanks I'm right on it. I may have yanked a wire loose because all I get now is vertical bars no more image.
