View Full Version : HD-10k not displaying digital HD content

Hi all, I'm having trouble determining if my issue is the projector, cables or scaler. I've got a JVC HD-10K projector which you probably know accepts just one input, 1080p 40, 50 or 60 Hz over DVI. I got the bundle package that included the JVC HR-1080-PRO scaler which I guess is just an oem'd Realta HQV system from Silicon Optix? My current sources are a Verizon Fios STB feeding the scaler with component 1080i, an old Kenwood progressive scan standard DVD sending it 480p over component and as of yesterday, a Toshiba HD-DVD player (A30) using the HDMI input and a Samsung BD player connected with an HDMI to DVI cable since the scaler's only got one HDMI input.

Prior to purchasing the two new HD sources yesterday, the projector was fed off the scaler's DVI output from a separate room using DVI over fiber. It has been working great upconverting the two analog sources to the required 1080p output. With the two new digital sources I just get a black screen but the scaler's LCD displays the expected input rates that I set it to from those devices, I've tried all varieties and nothing produces anything but black screen. I noticed in the scaler manual a blurb that states "If you are connecting to a panel or projector that supports the coding of HDCP encrypted material on its DVI input, you must connect to that DVI input using the HDMI OUT connector (and an HDMI to DVI adapter)." Before thinking any further, I run out and get a converter, forgetting that there should only be HDCP content while the movie is playing correct? I should still get the players' setup menus, etc. shouldn't I?

So now I'm running HDMI out of the scaler to the DVI over fiber contraption; same black screen. Now that I've got this happy adapter though, I take it and plug it into the Toshiba which I've set to 1080p and which the scaler had registered as outputting 1080p/60 or 1080p/24 if set to that mode. I left it on 60 since the HD10k only accepts 1080p/40, 50 or 60. In that configuration I get a bright blue screen coming from the projector instead of the black, so I move it back to the scaler.

Both the projector and HR-1080-Pro advertise upgradeable firmware but of course there's no firmware to be found anywhere I looked online for either device. The scaler does have a web interface supposedly, and serial, so I'm going to try to hook those up and get into the config that way to see if it tells me anything different. In the meantime, does anyone have ideas on what might be wrong?

Thanks!

Ok, bought some more goodies at the store to test out my theories on this issue; needed an LCD for the home office anyway so picked up a Sharp 32" 1080p LCD with HDMI & DVI inputs, some adapters, cables, etc. After lots of experimentation, including using all the various adapters I have connected directly to my HDDVD and BD players, I have now determined the JVC HR-1080-PRO scaler, which JVC offered as their high end bundle option with the HD-10k when I bought it six months ago, does not support, or correctly support, HDCP on either its DVI input or DVI output. For example, HDMI from any device to the scaler and HDMI out of the scaler to the Sharp produce video at 1080p. DVI into the scaler and HDMI out, no good.

When I hooked my Verizon Fios STB HDMI to the scaler's DVI via converter and then HDMI out to the Sharp, the STB at least gave me an on-screen message saying HDCP authentication failed, use component out.

So, I can't pass HDCP in or out and no one seems to have any firmware updates for this scaler, or barely even a mention of its existence for that matter. Am I screwed or does anyone know more about this device and where I might get some updates or a fix?

Was this a new projector, or used?

Was this a new projector, or used?

It was new, but my builder took far longer to construct my house than expected so it sat in the box until the house was done and I didn't have time to get any 1080p sources until now. Of course the HD10k was discontinued over that time frame too. :( I discovered last night the HR-1080-Pro scaler is actually an OEM'd Silicon Optix Whitehorse unit, so I emailed them to see if maybe they will give me new firmware to fix the HDCP issue.

To my knowledge the HD10k was always HDCP...but, I'll admit that I have not worked with that particular processor.

You can feed the signal straight into the projector (but only at 1080p) and see if it displays.

Yep, the projector itself does, the scaler is just not passing HDCP in or out its DVI ports. And I'm using a DVI over fiber to get to the projector so the normal HDMI to DVI adaptors don't power the transceiver. LOL, I love it. While getting the serial number off the box for the JVC support email I did notice it shows manufacturing date of March '06 for the scaler, so it must have been sitting around in a box for a while; I'm hoping a firmware update will fix it if I can find who has firmware for the unit, or the Silicon Optix Whitehorse it's oem'd from; I emailed them too.

Yeah that is what I am wondering...did earlier versions of that scaler not support HDCP...let me know what JVC says.

Just got a response from an engineer at Silicon Optix; the hardware itself doesn't support HDCP on its DVI interfaces, so I need to use an HDMI swtich on the input side for my two players and HDMI on the output side to convert to the HD10k, which only has a DVI input. Since the HDMI to DVI converters available do not pass the power on to the DVI side, I'm going to have to replace my DVI over fiber cable with a powered HDMI over fiber and convert it back to DVI on the projector end. I found a 50 foot powered HDMI over fiber that is being overnighted to me, so I'll get it all hooked up tomorrow and hopefully finally be able to enjoy some 1080p on the HD10k. :)

Yikes. Lot of work! :) Well good that it is resolved...
