View Full Version : Smithsonian HD Bug on D*
ThumperII 12-02-07, 04:08 PM I was over at my parents place and The bug for the Smithsonian HD channel was mostly cut off in the lower right corner. The other channels did not have this issue so I do not think it is an over scan issue. Maybe it is getting zoomed somehow?
Has anyone else seen this?
videojanitor 12-02-07, 04:48 PM Just checked it, and although it is a little lower than most, it fits well within my screen (Panasonic 1080p plasma). However, I can see how this might be on the verge of cutting off on some sets. Here's a pic with the Panasonic in 1:1 mode (ie: zero overscan). Note that in this mode, I'm getting about a 3/8-inch black bar at the bottom, so the logo is actually a little higher than it appears.

Vampz26 12-02-07, 05:49 PM Nice screen cap...I know this is a bizzarre question, but what TV program is that?
videojanitor 12-02-07, 06:14 PM It was called "Smithsonian Spotlight." It's on again at 2:30am (ET), with many repeats after that. If you get the channel, search the guide and you'll find it.
shortkud 12-02-07, 08:41 PM Has always looked fine to me.

ThumperII 12-02-07, 09:52 PM Thanks for the replies. It looks like he has lots of over scan then.
MDKeller 12-02-07, 11:23 PM It is funny that you mention a problem with that channel in particular, I have been getting some pixelation on that channel only which is a bit bizarre.
mikemikeb 12-02-07, 11:26 PM How'd you get that screenshot, shortkud?

Its the only channel where the bug is partly off screen. The rest of the HD channels seem fine.
Why are networks still using bugs with colors in them? I wouldn't want that on my plasma.
jwebb1970 12-03-07, 05:12 PM I have DirecTv, and watch it on a Hitachi CRT RPTV that sits @ 4% overscan per AVIA.
I get no ID bug cutoff on any HD channel, although @ 4%, some bugs (ABC HD, for example) butt right up against the edge of the screen, whereas on my 19" bedroom LCD HDTV I get a little bit of space (of course, there is nothing important, image wise, on the 4% I "lose" on the big Hitachi).
The only real cutoff of info I ever see with the Hitachi/D* combo is on stuff like the Discovery HD simulcasts, when they are zooming/upscaling SD 4:3 stuff (generally info at the top/bottom on comercials, almost never "real" programming)

Good info, I appreciate that!

Thumper, don't feel bad. My overscan is much worst. Mine is so bad, I hardly see the logo. Here is a post and a couple of pictures from a very old thread from 10-29-06 about the overscan on my Pioneer set...

Saw those Pio shots on the archived link.
Wow....even my Hitachi was never that bad (came OOB @ about 5.5% overscan--reduced it to a solid 4% all around myself).
You can reign that in by reducing the horiz/vert size of the image, although doing so will require some serious geometry/convergence touchups. According to ISF guru Mr Bob over on the RPTV threads, 4-4.5% overscan is the goal on his CRT RPTV calibration jobs, and as low as most CRT RPTVs will get. Or if really brave, you can actually move/shim the entire CRT assembly closer to the mirror. Have heard of some getting near 0% overscan w/ that method.
That Pio looks much farther out than that, and uneven to boot.
