View Full Version : Newbie questions on impedance

I just purchased an HTR-6190 Yamaha receiver (which is functionally equivalent to the RX-V1800). My 2 main speakers are Mordant Short 914's, with an MS-905 centre, MS-903 surrounds and a Paradigm subwoofer.

The back of the speakers say "Impedance 4-8 Ohms Nominal".

The receiver has two settings for impedance:

The default is 8 ohms, and for that it says "the impedance of each speaker must be 8 ohms or above".

The other option is 6 ohms, and for that it says "the impedance of the front speakers must be 4 ohms or above, and for the center and surround must be 6 ohms or above".

Now for the newbie questions: What would be the optimal setting for my set-up? Would I be harming the speakers by using the wrong setting (I didn't even really think about it when using the speakers with my old receiver). I also plan to bi-wire the front speakers (not sure if it will make a difference, but I figure what the heck) if that makes any difference.

Thanks so much in advance.

Leave the receiver switch on 8ohm, even if you have speakers of lower impedance. Also, I would not worry about Buywiring, you will accomplish nothing as this is not true bi-wiring.
