Hello,
I'm new to this site and forum, so please excuse me if what I'm asking is not allowed. I've had a Sony RDR-GX7 I bought new in 12/03. It's worked flawlessly until recently. For some reason, it no longer seems to recognize my DVD+RW's that I've previously recorded. I get a "Disc Error" messase on the panel display, and a "cannot play this disc" message on the TV. DVD+R's seem to be no problem, and if I put in a brand new DVD+RW it will format and record. But as soon as I take it out, and put it back in it does the above. While I am considering seeing what the cost is to have it repaired, I've been very happy with it all these years, so can anyone give me a recommedation for a replacement that would be the current equivilent or better ? I only want a DVD recorder, not a VHS combo recorder.
Thanks for any advice.
Bill

Just don't get another Sony. They are really overly-sensitive to copy protection.

The only ones I could recommend that would have as good of a picture quality that you're used to with the GX7 would probably be a Panasonic, or maybe a Toshiba.

But most recorders nowadays aren't built anywhere as near as good as those older ones, including the brands I mentioned. They're all made in China now, and you'd be lucky if they lasted a year. Personally, if I liked the recorder so much, I'd just have it repaired (if I couldn't repair it myself).

I have a Sony RDR-HX900, and I can certainly understand how you feel. Those old Sony's are like tanks and excellent recorders (players, too) compared to the flimsy junk out there now.

Take the unit apart and look at the brand of the actual burner, most are generic IDE type. You could try to fing one and just replace that and see if the problem goes away. There are many post here and at AVforums on replacing DVD drives for other brands of recorders.

Thanks for your replies. I will see what I can do to keep this. As mentioned, all the new ones look and feel like junk.

Thanks again, Bill
