View Full Version : Need $150 -$200 remote for HT setup
xnio333x 12-03-07, 11:59 AM Hey everyone. Hopefully theres someone who has a quick response to this before i start digging in the forums for an answer. I have the following setup:
Panasonic PT-AX200U
Onkyo HT-S770 HTIB
XBox for DVD Player (buying Oppo Upconverting DVD player)
Motorola HD Cable box (Verizon Fios)
I also will be purchasing lutron IR panels for the recessed lighting. All my componets are located in closet so I guess I would need a RF remote. Is there anything with the $200 range that can accomodate everything or am I just dreaming? Thanks!
allredp 12-05-07, 11:50 PM :(Dreaming--those RF rigs will set you back at least $3-500+ depending on the number of components.
I bought a Harmony 890, which does the RF as you need, for $210 shipped off that auction site.
stepmback 12-06-07, 09:02 AM I just bought the RF-20 pack at Meyer Emco here in Northern VA for under $200 and it came with the base station. It is not as feature rich as some of the other MX models but does what I wanted it to do, which is control my rack components (HD-DVD, PS3 and Cable box) that are in my basement home theather from upstairs.... works fantastic.

I was thinking of a harmony remote, but my installer was saying that anything coming from Logitech was a pain to program due to lack of customization. Is that the case?

I believe I saw this in Best Buy today for around $125. I think this will be my choice. Thanks!

Just the opposite - you can program any command to any button, mix devices in a single activity-based button layout, etc. Maybe he was thinking about the macro features, which are limited to 5 commands?
The weakness of the Harmony remotes, IMO, is the ergonomics... small number buttons, flush vol./channel buttons, poor tactile response.
ThomasV555 12-09-07, 09:53 PM The Harmony is a good beginner remote. Custom delays and adavanced macros are an issue.
They are also cheaply built meaning buttons wear out very quickly and drops or spills often end the remote.
The PC programming at it's pricepoint is what sells them.

Are there any other brands out there besides Logitech that allow PC programming? And I mean with some sort of GUI interface, not actual programing.

Step,
Does this model control lutron lights as well? I've tried searching around for this info, but have had no luck. Thanks.

What would be a good RF remote that doesn't have these weaknesses?
Do all RF remotes come with base stations that have some number of IR emitters?
Thanks,
Nick
And there are no discrete on/off codes for the PT-AX200U which is completely unbelieveble !!! That's the answer they gave me when I asked for it : Unfortunately the projector will only accept discrete commands using the rs232 serial commands. I apologize for the inconvenience. Thank-you for choosing Panasonic North America.

Some just have one, some have more the MRF-350 for URC MX remotes does have six separates IR emitters. You can buy some single or double head IR emitters for 5-15$ each so if that's your only concern you can add some emitters, harmony remotes are fine for the price asked (the 890 comes with the RF extender in the box) but if you need more you're going to spend more. (the harmony 890 was'nt for me so I'll have to pay the price for what I need)
MX350 and MRF260 is good combo for 300 retail, sure they can be had cheaper
Not as pretty as an 890 but realiable.
