I mean most are made in the US - what's the deal? Is it the studios - region?

Just curious, because there are a lot I would like to get.

Thanks

Altough a movie could have been created in the US by one studio it may be distributed overseas by a completely different studio.

Since these overseas studios have different distribution rights from studios here and HD DVD has no region coding it makes it possible to order a different selection of movies including ordering on HD DVD what would be consided some Blu-ray exclusive movies here in the US.

Or not even a studio at all, but a distribution company. Rights to overseas distribution are a separate deal in most cases, which is why one should never assume that because a film is released in the USA that it will be released overseas, or vice-versa. People who "wait for the USA release" may be in for a bad surprise.

the better question is why certain movies (or at least movie (enemy at the gates)) would be available as an import but not a domestic release

Enemy at the Gates is a Paramount film (I believe) which may well be released sometime in the future here in the US
