I am not sure what the z-wave wireless or z-wave lighting does exactly for the 890. There's nothing on the Logitech 890 overview site that explains it. I guess that the wireless lets you push buttons without having to point the remote to the component--which is great for people that have theirs inside drawers or behind reflective glass. All of my components are in the open, which may cause me to go with the 880. (Plus it would be easier to convince the wife)

Are you asking that we explain the difference between the 880 and the 890? Sounds as if you have already made up your mind. BTW you can get an 890 on ebay for the price of an 880 in the store. Then again, you can get an 880 on ebay too, and cheaper than in the store!

I was asking what the z-wave is. I decided to go with the 880 because I don't have any components behind a drawer or glass.

Z-Wave is a type of wireless protocol kinda like x10. It allows you to control switches, dimmers and outlets with your remote. With the 890 you can assign control of zwave devices to an activity. You can for example press the "Watch a DVD" activity and have the remote turn on all your components AND automitacally dim the lights. In my living room my sub is tucked away in a corner away from the receiver so I could not plug the power cable from the sub into the receiver so that it automatically turns on when I turn on the receiver. So I got an 890 and a Z-Wave outlet module; now when I click "Watch a DVD" it turns on all my components and automatically powers on the sub.

Will the 890 also control x10 equipment? Thanks.

Not to hijack but I have similar questions.

I have a lutron maestro dimmer that I would like controlled with my 890. In fact, that is why I bought it. The dimmer is in the back of the room. Right now, I have all components controlled with the remote. But I chose not to set up the rf extender or z-wave devices until I found out what I was doing.

In essence, the lutron is being controlled by the harmony but I have to point it at the dimmer. I don't want to have to point the remote at the dimmer in the back of the room. How do I do this?

The 890 ONLY work with z-wave. No X10 and no Lutron. I take it you are controlling the Lutron switches with IR that you "learned" with the 890?

Anyways: Here is the page with the z-wave alliance: http://www.z-wavealliance.org/modules/Members/

I use the Leviton Vizia switches and dimmers without probles!: http://www.leviton.com/OA_HTML/ibeCCtpSctDspRte.jsp?section=15144&minisite=10024

SY, did you have success getting the Z-Wave outlet module to turn off? Which outlet module model do you have?

I have the Intermatic HA03 Lamp Module and I can control it via RF Control and selecting the device for on/off but, when adding it to and activity such as Watch TV I can only turn it on. When turning everything off the HA03 Lamp Module does not turn off.

Actually you can turn off the lights when selecting an activity such as Watch DVD. Also, you can turn the lights back on when going to any other activity. What I could not figure out was how to get the lights to come back on in the sole case of going to All Off directly from Watch DVD. A call to Logitech Level 2 Support took care of that in a flash.

I called Logitech and they couldn't figure it out either. They added an "All off" option under RF Control. Currently I turn all my devices off as normal using off. I then need to go to RF Control to turn off my subwoofer connected to the lamp module. Logitech escalated my case to their developers. We'll see what happens.

HI,

Set up a generic activity using any device and then set a scene that will turn off the lights.
Instead of hitting the "off" button, go to the activity screen and hit the generic activity.
This is the way I do it.

Any time you enter an activity the remote will turn "off" any devices not used by that activity.
Therefore any devices that were "on" when you enter the generic activity will be turned "off".
The lamp module(s) will be turned "off" by the scene that you attached to the activity.
