I recently purchased a Sony Bravia KDL-52W3000 LCD TV. It is a decent set but I have an issue. My SD DVD and cable content is below par in my book. I am noticing a lot of blurriness/shadowing (with almost what seems like a greenish/redish tint). I currently have a replacement scheduled to be delivered this friday. My question is, do plasmas have the same problem as this? I don't know if its because this set is only 60hz vs the new 120hz displays. I paid money for it at CC on Nov 24, 2007 and still have time to replace it for a new set but I don't want a set with blurriness during movements. Any recommendations for someone who has no idea about plasmas? Do they last longer than LCD?

well the sets with 120hz do not work well until you turn it off. go see the threads on lcds. so thats not the problem. thats a nice set and i considered it. but the plasma picture is better for me. when you get it home the picture just seems to pop. my friends lcd was very bright. that would wake my kids up i`m afraid. anyway, plasmas now last as long as lcds. ir is all but a thing of the past. npioneers and panasonics have really stood out in that regard. go back and look at the pioneer 5080hd. IMO it runs circles around the 3000w. you will thank me later. btw the 5080 can be had by most of the site sponsors. click and ask.

I don't know about the blurriness, but the coloring issue could be the settings. Most TV's come with their settings in what a friend of mine has dubbed "Disney Mode." The color, brightness, and contrast are all jacked up to make the TV "pop" on a showroom floor. If you have any THX DVD's they will have an optimizer that can help you tone it down back to reality. Try adjusting the setting first. Although I personally prefer the PQ of a plasma, most LCD TV's should still look pretty good once calibrated.

I am in exactly the same boat as lokus. Picked up the 52w3000 at Circuit City for $2600 on Black Friday and can't seem to get an acceptable picture out of it. The blurriness is driving me crazy, even on Blu Ray material. A static image looks unbelievable (Discovery's Sunrise Earth is breathtaking), however content with lots of movement produces very noticable blurriness, especially around faces for some reason. I've spent no less than 20 hours since I've purchased this tv trying to get the picture to my liking, but I've been unsuccessful. I'm coming from a 10 year old CRT, so I guess I'm just really sensitive to smooth motion or something.

I think I'm going to pick up a Pio 5080 or possibly a 5010 if the price is right.

I own both plasmas and LCDs. Let me put it this way. LCDs can produce very nice, sharp, bold, bright pictures. They're nice TVs. But now owning 2 Pioneer Kuros, imho, plasmas (at least the Kuros) have a depth and richness to their picture, hard to describe exactly, that LCDs can't quite touch. Plasmas just produce a very appealing picture to me. Go take a look at some of the nice plasmas like Pioneer and Panasonic, and see what you think.

I used to recommend plasmas to some people and lcd's to others...now I recommend plasma across the board. As anyone who has been keeping up the past few years knows..burn-in during pc use and gaming isn't a huge issue with the latest gen panels as long as common sense is used...and the only other lcd avantages got taken away when Panasonic introduced affordable 1080p and their anti-glare screen coating on the 77U's. All but the most diehard lcd fans will admit that movie watching is a better experience on a good plasma but even they will admit that they don't see the same kind of "motion blur" they get with their lcd's in fast action sports. Frankly, with prices the way they are right now I can't imagine going with an lcd unless you absoutely have to have an anti-glare screen above 50". (but I'm sure larger AG screens will come soon)

I second the last comments. I don't see any reason to not go plasma. I am very sensitive to the LCD motion blur. I get headaches watching sports on them. I was so glad when the Panasonic anti-glare PZ77 came out. We bought one for our well lit family room and moved our 37" Panny to our bedroom. They both give a picture with depth (almost 3D) and no motion blur.

There are a few things preventing me from getting a plasma: an upcoming wedding (one reason I returned my set) that we need to save for and uncertainty. My one concern is IR and burn in. It is my understanding that some sets have programs that run to avoid IR. I also read a review made by HDGuru about how many of the LCDs don't properly deinterlace 1080i film but do properly interlace 1080i video. I believe most of the HD channels on TV are 1080i film. So my questions are:

How well do plasmas deinterlace video?

How well do plasmas present SD DVD (through an upconverting player like the PS3)? I noticed blurriness and "shadowing" on various DVDs with my w3000.

WHat do you mean? A set with a 120Hz refresh rate is "on" all the time. It is a 120Hz TV as opposed to a 60Hz TV, theres no on or off switch for that man! You might be thinking of Motion Enhancer, which is encorperated with 120Hz, but it doesn't sound like you know all of what you're talking about. You even called the Sony W3000 the "3000w". I don't give you an ounce of credibility due to your misinterpritation of 120Hz refresh rates and misuse of the make "W3000" it looks like you're just posting to post, and you don't have much of an opinion, you pick the 5080 to compare, well almost anyone will agree with that.

Re: the posters concern...are you coming straight forma CRT to an LCD? Or have ytou woned a plasma or LCD in the past? I'm asking because sometime people who owned a CRT and move to an LCD expect the same picture that they got before. I kind of understand that, but it is a toally different technology. You will not get the same picture when watching SD on an LCD as your CRT...depening on the CRT. Although, with HDTV, the LCD will blow most anything out of the water. It is a common misunderstanding that an LCD will have the smooth as silk picture with all content, even SD. Some sets do, some don't. The W3000 does an alright job with SD in my opinion, so I don't know if you'll ever be satisfied with an LCDs display of SD. Go to the store...hopefully one with a live cable feed on their display sets, and check 'em out. Or take in a SD DVD and compare sets, see which one attracts you.

Good luck!
:)

To this day I still sometimes recommend plasmas, and I'm a 52XBR4 owner. Sometimes people could uyse a plasma more than an LCD, i.e. no windows or bright lighting around to cause glare, no video games, etc. It is all depending on individual needs and prefference and opinion. Nothing more nothing less. No TV is better than another, every TV is different for every individual buyer.

I have met a handful of people in stores that cannot for the life of them see the difference between the Sony XBR4 or the Samsung 81-Series and a Vizio at Wal-Mart. Yet they kick down the cash and off they go with their expensive TV that they can't honestly see the difference in picture quality with! It all depends. Some people hate LCDs, some people hate plasmas, some people hate both and will have a 27" CRT the rest of their boring life. :D ITs just all opinion.
