View Full Version : recommend a HD title
I'm getting a Blu-ray/HD DVD player later today, but still don't own a Blu-ray or HD DVD title. Is there a title (for either format) that really shows off the greatness of HD quality?
(yes, I have a HDCP enabled HDTV and HDMI cables)

MovieSwede 12-05-07, 05:35 AM O not the tier threads... ;)
But to give a neutral answer
BD
Casino royal
Kingdom of heaven
HD
Riddick
Hot fuzz (well I havnt seen the HDM yet, but i dont think I heard anyware else that this isnt among the best ever made)
stereo_steve 12-05-07, 06:07 AM I love HDDVD and I only buy HDDVD but you will get others firmly on the blue side for their own reasons.
Its really something you are going to have to decide on your own! Look at price, quality and features and come up to your own conclusion!
Good luck!
Bailey151 12-05-07, 09:02 AM BD = Ratatouille (hands down the best transfer I've seen on either side)
HD-DVD = Transformers, King Kong, or Hot Fuzz
DamageMcRamage 12-05-07, 09:10 AM BD = Ratatouille (hands down the best transfer I've seen on either side)
HD-DVD = Transformers, King Kong, or Hot Fuzz
I don't own a BD player yet, but Bailey is right on the money with these HD DVD picks. Darn good looking movies.
Lee Stewart 12-05-07, 10:02 AM OP - what is your favorite movie genre?
RScottyL 12-05-07, 10:13 AM Look here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=858316) and here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=942015).
I agree! These are probably the best places to look for HDM titles based on picture quality. Take your pic from there on what you would be most interested in seeing!
Morpheo 12-05-07, 12:05 PM I don't own a BD player yet, but Bailey is right on the money with these HD DVD picks. Darn good looking movies.
I agree but I would add M:I 3 to the list. If the OP likes classic movies, then I'd go for Forbidden Planet and Mutiny On The Bounty as well. I just bought MOTB and it looks (and sounds) just terrific.
wakashizuma 12-05-07, 01:35 PM BD
Black Hawk Down
Casino Royale
HD DVD
Transformers
Troy DC
alpha21 12-05-07, 01:43 PM Serenity - loads of replay value!!!!
jwebb1970 12-05-07, 01:55 PM Recently re-dipped BATMAN BEGINS on HD DVD.
All the 2-disc DVD extras included on a single HD DVD (albeit in SD, but so what), a very cool "In Movie Experience" PiP commentary/making of, and one hell of an HD transfer.
Another movie with lots of replay potential.
badandy642 12-05-07, 02:01 PM If you need a concert disc then you must get NIN: Beside You In Time
cobolisdead 12-05-07, 02:13 PM I can't speak for BD, but HD DVD-wise, I would greatly recommend the following:
Transformers
King Kong
Hot Fuzz
V for Vendetta
Chronicles of Riddick
Pitch Black
The Departed
Happy Feet
Batman Begins
Christmas Vacation
Matrix Trilogy
Superman Returns
General Kenobi 12-05-07, 02:39 PM The Thing is a must own on HD. Most of the other good ones have already been mentioned. Bourne next week:D I was also pleasantly surprised by Trading Places... not too shabby!
For BD:
the POTC movies
Spiderman 3
Die Hard 1-4
Troy DC
The Patriot
Black Hawk Down

Apparently there have been 632 MOTB sold. We were just discussing the matter here:

Welcome! (I cannot speak to the PQ or AQ on this title myself).
For HD DVD I would stay with Transformers, King Kong, Shrek 3 (purely on a PQ/AQ level, the movie was awful), Hot Fuzz, Corpse Bride, Matrix Trilogy(ALL look GREAT), and Harry Potter OotP (comes out next week-getting stellar marks) and Harry Potter 4 (I have the import: stellar demo material).
Only HP and Matrix don't come up as tier 0, some strange voting on HP...
Okay thanks everyone. I've seen most of the movies listed and I don't wanna buy something I already saw or own, so I'm gonna go with Forbidden Planet, Mutiny On The Bounty, Batman Begins or Black Hawk Down.
Thanks again folks
btw, what does HDM mean?

Batman Begins is a pretty good movie, much better than the other Batman movies in my opinion. Looks and sounds pretty good.
coolhand 12-05-07, 10:30 PM HDM= High Definition Media
Encompassing both BD and HD
Baccusboy 12-06-07, 02:36 AM I watched Sleepy Hollow on BR last night. I was impressed with the feel of it -- even the grain, which was there in full. I really enjoyed the dimensionality of it. Not the greatest movie, but I am a sucker for period flicks with good actors who look like real people.
2Channel 12-06-07, 03:20 AM There are plenty of good looking movies in both formats. A few of my favorite HD DVDs are:
Casablanca
The Departed
The Matrix
If I could only pick one, it would be The Departed.

Am posting some wikipedia text ,may be that will help you to choose one for your self.
"The first HD DVD titles were released on April 18, 2006. They were The Last Samurai, Million Dollar Baby, The Phantom of the Opera by Warner Home Video and Serenity by Universal Studios. The first independent HD film released on HD DVD was One Six Right.
In December 2006, Toshiba reported that roughly 120,000 Toshiba branded HD DVD players have been sold in the United States along with 150,000 units coming in the form of HD DVD upgrade kits for the Xbox 360.
As of April 18, 2007, (on the first “birthday” of HD DVD), the HD DVD camp reported that they had sold 100,000 dedicated HD DVD units in the U.S. alone, (not including any computers with HD DVD drives or Xbox 360 add-ons drives—the latter of which was reported to have sold 92,000 units during the Christmas holiday season)."
So this might get you a title for your HD DVD player.Well I suggest you choose "phantom of opera".
Good Luck
odd... i got into Best Buy and totally forgot my list. i ended up getting Fifth Element and Casino Royale on Blu-ray. I've already seen CR but it's so good, i don't mind seeing it in HD. I've only seen a couple of minutes of FE some time ago on TV, plus with those visuals, i imagine i'm in for some great HD eye candy. or am I?
i understand some HD converts are cheap and dirty converts, which titles are those (so i can stay away from them)??
Die Hard 3
Biased because I just watched it and it was a great ride.
MovieSwede 12-07-07, 07:26 AM Can add if I was only allowed to own 1 title.
It would be Batman begins, best replay value.
MidnightWatcher 12-07-07, 03:48 PM Every HD DVD owner should buy Transformers without a doubt.
khwiggins2 12-07-07, 04:05 PM Every HD DVD owner should buy Transformers without a doubt.
My wife and I have watched this 5 times already and she usually doesn't like to repeat movies.

My fiance was mesmerized by Transformers. Don't know if it was the movie or the fact that this HD DVD is so impressive. :)
chipvideo 12-07-07, 04:33 PM Maybee it was the IronHIde flip that made her feel all warm and fuzzy inside.LOL.
MovieSwede 12-07-07, 05:48 PM Whats so great about transformers? Its seems like there is more action(explosions) then story?
Havnt seen it yet.
TuenMuner 12-07-07, 06:42 PM BD:
Casino Royale
Crank
Black Hawk Down
Live Free or Die Hard
HD:
Transformer
Matrix Trilogy
Fearless
Batman Begins
Morpheo 12-07-07, 09:36 PM Whats so great about transformers? Its seems like there is more action(explosions) then story?
At first I was really skeptic about Transformers. After all, what's so great about a movie coming from a bunch of toys ? ...But... Michael Bay sure has his own style, some like it, some hate it, no news here, but he managed to make this impossible story an absolute thrill ride. Besides, eventhough we're used to great visual effects in todays movies, this one has the most realistic CGI I've ever seen. The robots are simply jawdropping. The movie doesn't take itself too seriously, and that is also one of its strengths. Even if you think you won't like it, you'll enjoy it anyway!:) It's just a big summer blockbuster, but it's a really great one. As for the HD DVD, it has a reference quality picture, and the sound is first class (I don't have the LFE issue I've seen in another thread)...
Best HD-DVDs I have so far:
Troy: The Director's Cut (it's just...WOW)
Batman Begins (of course)
Hot Fuzz
The Last Samurai
SomethingMore 12-08-07, 11:51 AM Shooter (I own the HD DVD, but I'm sure, if you want and can still find the BD, it's worth picking up)
thebends22 12-10-07, 07:43 PM Planet Earth on either format. Absolutely stunning moving imagery of this doomed planet.
Timothy Ramzyk 12-10-07, 08:15 PM KING KONG
It looks nice, has a lot rumble-your-butt surround-soundy things and is a great general-purpose film to show to any audience IMO. Women like it too.
Baccusboy 12-10-07, 08:24 PM Any of the following titles from Amazon Japan:
Hi-Vision レイプCOLLECTION
Excite ビーチバレー
Hi-Vision Debut 香坂百合
初撮り素人
