I just got this TV KDF-60WF655 from a guy off of Craigs list for some speakers and a guitar. He say's the tv needs repair. The I already checked the bulb hours and its around 8800 hours.

The tv powers on, the bulb warms up, then it turns off (including sound), and flashes a green light for about 30 seconds, then turns back on for another 30 seconds and repeats this non stop.

I called a repair shop and they said it might be my power supply or my light engine, both are around 500 dollar repairs. I have also read on another forum with someone with a similar problem with a different tv just got a new bulb and the problem went away.

Please guys, I'm a noob when it comes to the HD world (this is my first HDTV) any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

And please, if you know where I can get an answer just provide a link.

You need to tell us how many times the green light flashes between cycles.

8800hrs on a bulb is a lot. Try a new lamp first. Suspect one of the fans next. Try Display, 5, Vol Down, Power - should bring up error report.

1. lamp err 0
3. lamp cover 1
4. fan-e / temp-e 1/0
5. lamp driver 1
the rest are all 0's

and the green led flashes 29 times before the picture comes back on. 36 flashes in total untill it stops.

First make sure the lamp cover door is secure. Probably not the current cause, because the tv shouldn't start at all with that open. Just a "left over" code.

So your left with a Fan, which is usually the lamp fan. Try pulling the lamp and using compressed air to blow out all the dust off the fan, then re-assemble. That might be just a temporary fix. Or it's the lamp driver (ballast).

You should clear the error report by pressing 8, Enter while you are viewing it. Now try another few restarts and then check the "clean" error report.

I took the lamp out blew it off as best I could with compressed air, then blew out as much of the guts as I could. I turned the tv on without the lamp in it to see if it would reset something.

The bulb is all funky looking! It has burned dust all in bulb. I'm pretty sure it might be a bulb issue, because when I put it back in, the lamp light was flashing red. I turned off the tv for about 5 minutes, turned it back on, and the screen came up, but it was still doing the on/off thing. I should have a new bulb next week. I'll be sure to report my findings.

Problem fixed and explained!!!

I replaced the bulb and its working like its new. But read below to find out why this happens!

"DLP Light source
The main light source used on DLP based rear screen projection TVs is based on a mercury vapor arc lamp. At start up the arc lamp is "struck" by a 5000V charge to start the arc in the arc tube. The arc starts and after warmup the "hold" voltage drops to approximately 60 volts. At the end of its life, a mercury-vapor lamp commonly exhibits a phenomenon known as cycling. As a lamp gets older, the maintaining voltage for the arc eventually rises to exceed the voltage provided by the ballast module. As the lamp heats, the arc fails and the lamp goes out. Eventually, with the arc extinguished, the lamp cools down again, the gas pressure in the arc tube is reduced, and the ballast can once again cause the arc to strike. The effect of this is that the lamp glows for a while and then goes out, repeatedly. The RPTV ballast designs detect cycling and give up attempting to start the lamp after a few cycles. If power is removed and reapplied, the ballast will make a new series of startup attempts. This failure is then typically indicated via LEDs on the unit, and necessitates replacement of the lamp." Which fixed issue!!!
