View Full Version : Stop using 300 to test HD DVD Quality!!!
jefflins 12-05-07, 08:38 AM Thats all...going crazy reading these, " I loaded 300 in my HD DVD player, and I think something is wrong...the picture is all grainy"...
UGH!
Toshiba should find the guy that came up with that idea...and make him go byebye...
Gary Hudson 12-05-07, 08:43 AM Yes, the obvious choice should be Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.
...just kidding, use Transformers.
sivartk 12-05-07, 09:11 AM yes, the movie sucks and the director intentionally made it grainy.
It was a bad choice to throw in the box for free.
Grainy is good. Grainy makes it look filmy.

guyutemsg 12-05-07, 09:23 AM Wow. 300 looks beautiful. The slow motion, 360 degree blood splatter shots ROCK. If people never heard of directors intent, then OH WELL for them.
I love the way this movie looks. It creates a great mood. Maybe one day the complainers will watch the blue screen PiP layer to get a better understanding.
JOHNnDENVER 12-05-07, 09:38 AM I would only say? The free titles were picked to be offered as free titles for a reason.
I wish more people had the SD-DVD of the same titles as well to make a direct comparison. I think this alone would satisfy the original posters in such threads.
raoul_duke 12-05-07, 09:40 AM Anyone that think 300 looks bad on HD DVD is quite frankly: (a) A liar or (b) Partially Sighted or even (c) An idiot.

Actually, it makes perfect sense as, even though it has a lot of grain, people want to see it in HD. So if they are going to Best Buy, are they goiong to buy a $500 player and buy it for $30, or are they going to buy the $200 player that comes with it and another movie?
EDIT: And BTW, I really like this film, both in the theater and on HD DVD.

d) all of the above
elezzar 12-05-07, 10:05 AM To some people this movie is bad in picture quality. I bought this movie yesterday and i find it has terrific picture quality. Well it has grain but i didn't find it distracting at all.

I 2nd that opinion! I love they way it looked
sswingle 12-05-07, 10:10 AM Problem is, J6P doesn't understand all that. They see the grain, and think OMG HD sucks. They need to put Hot Fuzz in the box.

my guess is "c"
This movie looks exactly like it did in the theater! If people don't understand this....too bad for them and ignore their posts.
HD doesn't magically make a movie look 3D. It shows how the movie was intended to look by the director.
automata 12-05-07, 11:06 AM I, for one, am greatful that some people hate the way 300 looks in HD. I got my copy for free, from a freind who hated it. I was really impressed with the PQ. I wasn't a big fan of the film itself so I didn't plan on buying it. Now that I have a copy, it's starting to grow on me.
RBurnthorn 12-05-07, 11:11 AM 300 has got to be one of the best movies of 2007... Pride, dignity, honor. Love that movie!
I have it recorded on my phone "the world will know that few stood against many..."
For the video, I have it on SD on my HTPC with Theatertek and HD with the Toshiba.
There is a difference, my wife says she can't tell, but after doing a side by side with her and pointed out the addtional detail, she can now appreciate the HD DVD player I bought. (or thats what she is telling me anyway).
For what it's worth I really like 300 PQ, I get it:rolleyes:

You forgot adultery, discrimination and stupidity in that list.
Adultery ...... queen uses sex to try and bribe councillor
Discrimination ........ against the cripple.
Stupidity ........ stand him on the end of the line.
(Not that they ever fought with their shields protecting the man by their side)
Stitchesman 12-05-07, 11:22 AM I can see why someone would think that it is not a good demo disc. The director added so much grain and black crush. I am all for artistic intent and thought it was great in 300, but let's be honest with ourselves....it's not a great demo disc.
HPforMe 12-05-07, 12:05 PM We better get used to some of these styles. Another stylistic choice I despise is the desaturated color look, for example, Flags of Our Fathers and Letters. I think it's stupid and unecessary. What's worse, is that once it starts other directors start playing the same game. What is unique on a couple of occasions becomes a tired refrain on others.
Having said all that, there is a uniqueness to this presentation which only a high definition presentation can maximize.
suffolk112000 12-05-07, 12:13 PM Grainy is good. Grainy makes it look filmy.
Uh oh... here we go again... :D

Well I think that they put this in the box to demo interactivity as opposed to just HD PQ. BTW I loved 300 and the way it looks.
bflip1080 12-05-07, 12:20 PM I thought the PQ was good. compared to the sd side of the disc the colors and everything else just popped. I just did not enjoy the story. everyone i knew said it was this fantastic movie, so maybe all that hype set me up for disappointment. i like the actors and think they did a good job, but after watching the movie i just sat there and said eeehhh. not too impressed. i'd rather watch gladiator.
PQ is great and the AQ is also some of the best I've heard so far.
Its a pretty cool flick, I like it, don't mind the intended look, I just much prefer the traditional look of movies...and one thing is for sure, I NEVER reach for 300 to show off "HD DVD" with to friends who've yet to see it, I think that would actually discourage them, now Kong, MI:III, Seabiscuit, Unforgiven, Batman Begins, Matrix, Planet Earth, etc? You bet, they get the "wow" from noobs. :)
PooperScooper 12-05-07, 12:33 PM We've already been down this road before with 300. Not again.
