Ok, I have HD-Net set up on my dvr to record Enterprise. It is currently half-way through the 3rd season (of 4). I hear that HD-Net will now become part of the HD Extra Pack, which will cost an additional $4.99. Fine. I don't like it but I'll pay it.

I call and try to add the service so that everything will be recorded when I return from vacation in three weeks.

They tell me it is in free preview and I can not add the service. The csr also says that HD-Net will be shut off when it stops being free and I will then have to add the service. I don't know if I will have any cell phone or internet access while I am gone so I'm not sure what I'll do.

But I wanted to warn others that may be expecting HD-Net to remain and have things set to record, that D* says they will be shutting it off after the free preview and you must add it yourself.

So if you get it now, you will get shut off if you don't add the pack? Or will it continue automatically and they just charge you more?

If what the CSR told him, the problem is what you suggest won't work, which is why is letting folks know.

"They tell me it is in free preview and I can not add the service. The csr also says that HD-Net will be shut off when it stops being free and I will then have to add the service. "

HDNet filed a temporary restraining order to prevent D* from implementing this package, or at least including the HDNet channels in it. A hearing to determine if an injunction is to be put in place is to be held on Dec 7th.

My guess is that you won't have to worry about losing HDNet for awhile, at least until the court hears arguments in the matter, and I wouldn't expect that to happen until sometime next year.

OTOH, the court could rule against the injunction on the 7th, but from what I've read that seems unlikely.

I believe the package was supposed to go into effect Dec 15th.

It's true that you can add it from their website, even while it's still in free preview mode. You will at least avoid disruption of those channels.

I added it when I signed up for DirecTv back in September. Billing/signup package has it listed as "Free for 3 months".

When I first called a CSR about HD Extra (had selected it online, but was unsure at the time about the need to), she had no idea what I was talking about. Granted, this was Sept. & the HD EXTRA option had only then just snuck onto their website. But I found that with DirecTv (as with Comcast before them), your best bet for programming info/changes is the online route, not their phone CSRs.

With the HDNet restraining order business, it may be that the Extra tier changes won't effect HDNet/Movies' current presence for at least the near future.

It's only a rumor, but I heard D* will be adding a new tier of charges based on how many times the remote is pressed - "Interactive channel delivery service"

You can also call the automated service and order it without speaking to a representative.

Well, looks like my problem has been solved--THANKS MARK!!!!

(HDNET will remain, HDNET-Movies will move as part of a settlement with D*)
