View Full Version : How many issues have you had with your HDM machine(s)?
Gordon Shumway 12-05-07, 02:08 PM Let's see how honest the HDM crowd can be...:)
It's very simple..no matter what machine you own, I'd like to see how many, if any, issues, troubles, glitches etc you have had since day one of ownership.
Feel free to list the issues so others may learn from them if need be.
Thanks for the feedback
Lee Stewart 12-05-07, 02:28 PM None - and I use rented DVD's from my local library. I do not belong to either BBI or NF.
I had minimal that all were resolved completely with firmware updates. When I did have an issue, I was still able to resolve it by ejecting the disc.
IRockSoAwesome 12-05-07, 02:34 PM I had a 360 Add On for about six months then gave that away when I got an A3 about a month ago. No problems with either (though the A3 is still early)
Gordon Shumway 12-05-07, 02:35 PM Good info so far..thanks for the feedback.
wostertag 12-05-07, 02:40 PM I own an XA1, A35, BD-P1000 and a PS3. I used to have a lot of trouble with the XA1 (skipping, freezing, etc.). Just about every movie did something bad. Sent it in for repair. Toshiba replaced the drive and the mainboard (took 5 weeks) and no more problems :) The A35 has been flawless so far. The BD-P1000 I had to wait on a firmware upgrade one time, and it would take forever to load some disks (these are pretty much resolved). It still streches 4:3 SD material:( The PS3 after the latest firmware will not handshake at 1080P/24 to my Pearl thru a Denon 2808I with the player set to "auto" (does 1080i/60). I have to force 1080P/24 to "on". I haven't really looked into this problem to see where it lies, yet. For new technology, I'm pretty pleased with all of them (once the XA1 was repaired).
I have an HD-E1. Had the following problems;
1.) Sometimes when I start it up, it just hangs and displays "WELCOME" on the front forever. Only solved by unplugging power then plugging back in.
2.) My Freedom discs don't work. I forget the error messsage. Probably a firmware issue, which goes to
3.) Can't update the firmware via network. No other device has any problem with the network, but with all the settings confirmed, the E1 just doesn't want to play ball. Toshiba don't make it obvious on their UK site either where they keep the latest firmware for downloading (when you do find it, it's inncreeddiiblly slow to download).
I never had any problems with my HD-A1 (despite the fact it was dreadfully slow). Never had any issues with the original Samsung or my PS3 either.
A2 and PS3 here. Needed a firmware update for one title glitching on the A2 and had the PS3 long enough to run into the firmware 1.5x pausing issue with active internet connection. No lasting issues.
rynberg 12-05-07, 02:48 PM After updating the firmware on my A3, it refused to play HD-DVDs. A simple reinitialization fixed the problem and haven't had any since.
coolhand 12-05-07, 02:49 PM I had a bunch of people over to watch Departed on my HD DVD player RIGHT after I got it. They came over and the disk wouldn't work. Ended up watching the SD version. At the time I had no idea that we needed to upgrade the firmware. I did so and I have not had a problem ever since.
Rambler358 12-05-07, 02:49 PM None on either my XA2 or PS3 to date. :)
EDIT: I should add that I kept firmware up to date on the players as they became available.
Gordon Shumway 12-05-07, 02:54 PM Yes lets just keep it at HD DVD standalone players and Blu Ray standalones...PS3... etc since the average shopper will be buying those rather than trying to build a HTPC.
:)
It depends on the machine. My A1 had a couple of minor glitches a year ago, but no problems in a long time. My Sharp BD player has been trouble free so far. My Sammy 1200 got so bad, that after a few months it was incapable of playing anything all the way through.
So, how am I supposed to vote?

Very simple...count how many seperate issues each machine had, add them up, post your findings....:)
PlayDoh 12-05-07, 03:06 PM I rarely have a disc that plays all the way through flawlessly on my A1. I just bought an A2 and have already had several issues (freezes, "Not a DVD" messages, etc.) It took 7 times ejecting and restarting before it would recognize "Knocked Up", for example. This has been typical of both my A1 and A2 - both always with the latest firmwares. The 'freezing' (video pause, then stutters back) is intermittent, and occurs on both rentals and brand new copies of movies (TF, for example).
My PS3 has been flawless from day one.
Russ Younger 12-05-07, 04:39 PM No problems here.
HDA1
Sony PS3 80GB
tormond 12-05-07, 04:41 PM PS3, A1, A2, XA2 here. Have had 2 issues playing discs on the PS3 that a pop the disc out and reinsert fixed. Have had 2 issues on my A1 where it failed to handshake properly on HDMI and caused the discs to be wonky (kept downrezzing etc) Have had 1 issue of playback on the A1 where reinserting the disc fixed the issue. No issues at all on the A2 or XA2
ccotenj 12-05-07, 04:45 PM 2 xa2's that had the shutdown problem...
zero problems with a20...
zero problems with bdp-s1...
firmware current on both...
both play movies i own and rentals...
i hope i didn't just jinx myself there...
i'm assuming you voted zero, right gordon? ;)
PS3 20GB user, no probs except for 1 unreproducable freeze about 9 months ago. Own ~100 BDs.

Sorry no..I don't wanna mess up the poll...I'm sure some are out to throw off the numbers but oh well... :)
Azrael616 12-05-07, 04:50 PM Only problems I've had with my A2 or PS3 is a couple of Netflix discs needed cleaning before they would play. Other than that both have been flawless.

Thanks for the info..BTW..this is a good example folks...for him I'd say he has "2" problems so he can safely vote "1-2". :)
fuzzatch 12-05-07, 04:52 PM I had one issue playing the We Are Marshal combo disk where the aduio would stutter and then get out of sync. This issue was resolved by getting a new copy of the disk, so I don't know if it would have been fixed with new FW. This was on an HDA3 with 1.2 FW.
Timothy Ramzyk 12-05-07, 05:04 PM XA2
I voted one to two, but since the second to last firmware update, nada. On the whole I cannot complain.
MauneyM 12-05-07, 05:39 PM I have an XA2, and I have seen two issues of note:
1) I had a lock-up with a rental copy of The Departed' - a re-start solved the problem.
2) I had a similar lock-up with 300; a restart solved it, as well. I will probably check this to see if it's consistent at the same place (indicating a disc issue); I need to see if the latest FW has fixed it (before I have the nieghbors over to watch....)
42Plasmaman 12-05-07, 05:55 PM I own the BD-P1200 and HD-A20
1. Playback issue with F4 ROTSS - fixed with FW update.
2. Pause/play/resume 1 second stutter on Blu-ray discs - hope to be resolved on next FW update.
3. Angle icon appearing breifly on certain CGI discs since last FW update - turned off realtime display popup until FW update resolves issue.
4. Playback issue with Live Free Die Hard - currently there's a workaround but ultimatley should be resolved with FW update
5. Playback issue with POTC AWE - can't play - should be resolved with next FW update
6. Macroblocking on HD DVD discs via HDMI - worked around by using Component output
7. Audio low on Transformer HD DVD - just turned up volume to compensate
I have a Sony BDP-S1 and I keep it up to date as to firmware. I had to wait for the firmware updates to play the original POTC discs and there have been a few freezing or skipping issues, but nothing that significant and nothing that required me to do anything I couldn't do from my remote control. It is a bit slow, but such is life.
vurbano 12-05-07, 06:41 PM I havent had any problems I can recall that were not fixed with a new disc or the result of a scratched disc. Toshiba has been very prompt with updates. No complaints here. I hate polls like this because they get referenced by fans from the other side without consideration that most have had their problems fixed.
Customgamer1 12-05-07, 06:50 PM A1 had it for just about a year with 1 or 2 problems not a real big deal!
I love my A1
mproper 12-05-07, 06:55 PM Had the add-on for about 8 months and replaced it with the A3 about 3 weeks ago. No problems with any discs...even though I rent mostly from Netflix.
Slim GoodBooty 12-05-07, 07:00 PM With HD DVD, my players had some discs they didn't like last spring, but since it has been fine.
With BD, my pioneer takes a while to load and BDJ heavy discs seem to piss it off ever so ofter. The latest firmware didn't really help.
My issues were really just impatience.
Transformers and Evan Almighty take quite a while to load the first time you play them.
That is more of a knock on the studios, who decided for me that I wanted online interactive features than my actual player though.
Once had a DVD create a screeching noise on my HD XA1. Ejecting the disc and playing it again solved it.
I was able to replicate a couple audio glitches on my HD XA2, but I never had one in normal use. Once had a Netflix disc not play, but wiped it off and it played fine.
No issues at all that were not immediately solved that interfered with me enjoying the movie that day
sivartk 12-05-07, 09:35 PM No problems with my HD DVD Player...however, my PS3 locked up / froze on the first day. I was using the media center capabilities, so I didn't count it as a HDM problem. Had to pull the plug...rather upsetting for such an expensive piece of equipment.
joe01880 12-05-07, 09:49 PM I own a Toshiba HD-A3, i have watched 14 HD-DVD's through it and 12 SD DVD's and have not had even a hint of a problem.
I also own Westy 37w1 1080p monitor, also not even a hint of trouble and it passes every screen test pattern on DVE.
HDLooker 12-05-07, 09:51 PM No problems!! Nada!! Kind of ironic that a guy who refuses to buy into HDM is trying to get ammo to justify his view. LOL Unfotunately (for him), in my case, "The sky is NOT falling!!"
george king 12-05-07, 10:07 PM I have an a20 and have had no problems, although it does take awhile to boot.
Not one problem with my A2 or A3 from day one...I did have a problem with my first PS3, it died after 2 weeks of ownership, my replacement has been flawless though.

Glad you're lucky enough to have a flawless player so far....and correct, last I checked the sky wasn't falling...thanks for playing though.
ChrisBeveridge 12-06-07, 08:37 AM Across five different units, never a problem. Samsung BDP1000, Panasonic BD10 and three PS3's (two 60gb and one 40gb).
I didn't include my HD-A1 since everything I had was a rental disc and those were just problematic in general. Never bought a release past the first one when I bought the deck so I can't speak fully of it. My rental experience was just a mess however.
Mr. Cinema 12-06-07, 08:52 AM A3...flawless
BD30...flawless
PS3...flawless
A1....90% flawless with a few hiccups here and there. No different than my first couple of dvd players.
Glad you're lucky enough to have a flawless player so far....and correct, last I checked the sky wasn't falling...thanks for playing though.
Gordon, Here's more ammo. I didn't know you were looking for ammo though. My A-35 had some freezeups and refusals of 2 or 3 HD-DVDs. I had a problem getting FW burned to a CD. Woe is me. NO, NO, I had read reviews on A-35 before purchase and knew ahead of time that there were certain things I was going to have to do in order to achieve perfection. (kidding of course) Since upgrade no problems. Through the HD-DVD distractions as I have said in other posts I had mind-boggling SD viewing. I have no complaints about anything, Perfection is beyond mere mortal man, so I go with what I got.
DamageMcRamage 12-06-07, 09:10 AM I have had a quite a few problems. My first HD-A1 was buggy. At first it was fine, but after I played a CD in it, it wasn't the same. It would randomly not play discs and freeze up. I sent that unit back to Crutchfield for an exchange. The new one was fine, for a while. For some reason, when I had some friends over, I put in an HD DVD and it would not recognize it, the drive kept making a faint clicking sound. I tried other HD DVD's, same thing. Interestingly enough, it played SD DVD's just fine. I unhooked it, and put it away. Anyone ever hear of something like this? Perhaps the unit is still fine, though I never bothered to have it repaired under warranty...lazy me, I just bought the HD-A2. This unit has been relatively problem free. It has had problems playing 2 discs, 300 (combo) and Children of Men (combo?). Every now and then it freezes if the disc is dirty or scratched up. It has been and interesting ride, and my pro Blu Ray friend makes fun of me:o

I was fine with the 'quirks' and long load times, etc. of my A1... until I got my PS3. Lately, the issues I've had with so many discs has lead me to hold a grudge against HD DVD, if that makes sense. :) Just to spite my HD player which couldn't load/play "Knocked Up", I took it out of the player, flipped it over (combo!) and played the SD side on my PS3. I find myself using the PS3 MUCH more often than my HD player(s), both for SD and HD material. Which is all pretty unfortunate, as I'm (was?) a big fan and promoter of HD DVD...
And I know, comparing the PS3 with the A1/A2 isn't exactly fair, but in my mind a standalone *should* be a better experience than a 'gaming machine'. (And I did consider the 360 AO, but there are too many negatives vs the A1 for me)
Oh look what I did, I ranted a bit. Sorry about that. :o
anttimonty 12-06-07, 10:40 AM Not a single problem with my PS3
pablo13 12-06-07, 10:42 AM HD A2
Wouldn't play my Gladiator SD DVD - I tried after every update - no go
I switched discs with my brother, his works fine - so all good now
No problems with any HD DVD - and most of the viewing discs are rentals

I have a Toshiba HD-E1 for five months now, latest firmware updates have been installed. I am also using the Toshiba as a SD DVD player and as a CD player, so i am using it on a daily basis.
The only problems i encountered a few times (more than five times iirc, maybe about 6 to 8 times) were freezes of the player, when it no longer reacted to the remote control. It would even keep playing a movie/cd flawlessly, but it didnīt react to the rc any more. In these cases the player couldnīt be shut down using the "power button" on the player itself. I had to pull the plug to get it to reboot.
HD-A1 since August of '06 and the only problem I've had is with Happy Feet (28 mins).
Zero problems so far from my PS3.
Never had a single glitch with either my PS3 or HD-A2. Both 6+ months old running current firmware. My launch HD-A1 had several freezes and lockups pre 2.0 firmware.
Bailey151 12-06-07, 01:06 PM Had a couple rentals that had the "used as a coaster on concrete" look that skipped but zero issue with either A2 or PS3.
JBlacklow 12-06-07, 01:12 PM PS3 from December of 2006, and no problems yet...except for spending more money on BDs and A/V equipment upgrades. ;)
Will BD set tops require firmware updates to play new discs moving forward due to BD+ DRM?
If BD+ is circumvented, will new disc purchases after that with revised BD+ require firmware updates?

These things are not ready for primetime. My HD A2 had the load up times of a Commodore 64 and worse SD PQ than my 3 year old Panasonic DVD player.
I was able to offload the thing, thankfully.
cobolisdead 12-06-07, 02:07 PM Other than my 360 getting the 3RLoD, I haven't had a single issue with my add on drive.
1) My A2 doesn't work with my Z2.
2) Can't tell, it has been collecting dust since there is no point of matching it with my 42" 7xxp LCD in the bedroom, especially with the load time...
westgate 12-06-07, 06:05 PM i think i eff'd up when voting. i voted 'no issues'.
toshiba hd-a2, hdmi to dvi cable, to pan. ptl500 hd pj.
i do have the hdmi-dvi black crush/color space issues on film based hd dvds to some extent but it still looks very good. increase brightness a little.
video based hd dvd (concerts) and all sd discs, no problems at all. so far.
other than that, ive have had no issues. ALL discs have loaded and played very nicely.:D somewhat to my surprise. i do clean ALL discs first.
i may move a2 to kitchen hdtv and try a 3rd gen machine w pj if hdmi-dvi issues fixed.? but who the hell watches any type of dvds in kitchen? LOL!
and, im running fw 1.1 on a 10-06 build machine.

This is apparently not clear. Some speculate that many of the stand-alone players will simply not work with 1.1 or 2.0 discs, some speculate that they simply won't work with the advanced features, and some speculate that they may be firmware upgradeable. We probably won't know for certain until we see some 1.1 and 2.0 discs, and it might well be different for different players.
The PS3 would appear to be the most likely candidate for upgrading to the new profiles (it definitely has the processing horsepower necessary), but it has not been confirmed as of yet.
That said, this is a bit OT for this thread - your question would probably be better posed in the BD forums.
rynberg 12-06-07, 07:37 PM iand try a 3rd gen machine w pj if hdmi-dvi issues fixed.?

The 3rd gen machines (finally) use the studio RGB levels for HDMI-DVI connections.
Why aren't you running the current firmware?
I've had the A3 for a full week now. It has worked flawlessly without a single hitch. *crosses fingers*
So far, the only issue I've had is incompatibility between the HDMI output on my HD-FX2 (Japanese version of A2) and my Sanyo Z2 projector's DVI input (even with the latest firmware). To be honest, I knew about this issue before I bought the FX2, so I can't really complain. I'm planning to upgrade to a 1080p PJ in the next few months anyway, so I've been happy enough using the Toshiba's component output.

actually, im still waiting for disc from tosh. i have one of the w-mart c-note a2 specials; i mailed in reg and fw paperwork around 11-5-07, its been a month.? i called on 11-3 and csr said they were way backed up and may take a few weeks. guess he was right. i may not use it right away anyway.
from what ive gleaned from various threads here at avs, hdmi-dvi rgb issue fw solutions for a2 are not quite ready for prime-time.
'ht' setup is 40' from computer and i didnt want to mess w ethernet deal anyway.
edit- im also sort of operating under the old adage, 'if it aint broke....'.
Rachael Bellomy 12-07-07, 01:15 AM I said 5 or more. I mothballed an XA1 because it wouldn't play much of anything with freezing or losing audio-video sync....losing the audio...usually. I have an A1 that's done much better and with the last few firmware upgrades works better than ever. My A2 was disappointing at first with some freeze-up's but with the last several firmwares works very well. No problems so far with an A35.
My Samsung 1000 took nearly 6 months to get any good use out of it. Samsung's suppourt was too slow and inept. I even sent it in to them and they didn't finish all the work...It works on most discs I suppose. I gave it to my mom.
I had 2 freeze-up's with the Panny A10 with the early firmwares. It has just been a magnificent since then. I have a Sony 300 that I just don't like. It has HDMI issues and minor navigation issues. I'll proably sell it. I got a Panny BD30 and no issues so far.
My Samsung 1000 barks a bit. My XA1 acts like a dead dog.
Toshiba craftsmanship at it's finest.
Lee, if you are reading, remind me why no one aside from Toshiba makes HD DVD players, because I would hop on a Denon or Sammy or God Forbid a Sony in a minute.
Right now I have the 360 add-on which is made by Toshiba, and it treats me good, but these horror stories about the SA's is a continual bummer. I love HD DVD as a format, but will not buy a SA until a decent one is made.
Above statement makes not implications on the crap SA BD players either.
Why do the two gaming consoles that every HT enthusiast hates the existence of have the best track record for general playback?
I know the audio codecs on the 360 AO are limited at best, but I have never had a single bad experience with it. Same goes for the PS3.
What gives?
westgate 12-07-07, 01:20 AM long live rin tin tin!:D id like dvds of that, fury, a few others i cant think of right now.
blazed54 12-07-07, 07:28 AM xbox 360 add on. not one single problem ever.
R Miyashiro 12-07-07, 09:11 AM I've had a few odd issues with the HD-A1. Freedom volume one didn't read the SD layer when I first bought the DVD, but worked after a few firmware updates. One of the Heroes discs (I think third) froze in the menu screen.
There have been a couple of DVDs (Sneakers and Fear and Loathing) which had no audio when playing both DD+ or Dolby True HD going through 5.1 analog although the button sound effects came through. This was fixed by simply stopping and playing the DVD. I think both times I had turned on the machine with the monitor on a different HDMI input since it takes so long to turn the machine on.
No problems on the PS3 so far and the HD-A1 issues don't bother me that much since they are not mid-movie issues.
MidnightWatcher 12-07-07, 03:49 PM HD DVD owner here (HD-A20 and XBox 360 HD DVD add-on for my HTPC) and I have had zero issues.
khwiggins2 12-07-07, 03:58 PM In order of purchase:
1. HD-A1 - 2 problems that were resolved with firmware. CoM and something else.
2. BD-P1200 - more than I can count. Confirmed every bad thing I ever thought about blu-ray.
3. HD-A35 - 0 problems. Faster than HD-A1, mainly purchased to bitstream dts-hd ma for imported disks.
4. DMP-BD30K - 0 problems, is quickly making me think that blu-ray has a future along side hd dvd. Quicker than HD-A35 and almost as many features.
Never had a problem with my PS3, nor the HD-A2 I used to own. The HD-A1's I once owned OTOH were genuine POS's.

Since most HD DVD owners own a standalone instead of the add-on, and because people usually post about a problem rather than post about their player working perfectly, you'll hear about a problem more with standalones than the add-on. Overall, problems with both are very small. I'm willing to bet there are more problems with Blu-ray players, though, than HD DVD.

They may seem small to you but if I bought an A3 and got errors or couldn't play the discs included, that would be more than a small problem to me.
And yes, that has been reported more than once in the HD DVD player forum.
And you know as well as I do that both formats have their share of issues.
It just seems more of the 3rd Gen HD DVD players seem to be having the issues though on the HD DVD side and older 1st/2nd Gen Blu-ray players seem to be having some issues.
IMO, the 3rd Gen HD DVD players should be pretty close to bullet proof and should play the discs included with zero issues but that hasn't been the case.

gorthocar 12-07-07, 07:35 PM My PS3 BD player has been very good. With an ancient version of the firmware, I got bitten by the "random network related 15 second pause" in about 4 or 5 movies. This has been completely fixed by newer firmware. The layer change point in Black Snake Moan gave it trouble, but from threads here, that sounded like it was a manufacturing problem by Paramount because a lot of people had the same problem with that title.
I had a HD-A30 for a couple of weeks before I returned it primarily because it didn't have a force 1080p24 mode. The third brand new HD DVD I plopped into it gave a disc read error; after washing the disc it played fine.
Then I picked up a HD-A3 on sale. A brand new copy of Hot Fuzz had a little bit of fuzz or dust on it that hit playback around the 1 hour mark, but I was too lazy to stop it and clean it in the middle of the movie. It was very blocky with significant audio dropouts for a couple of minutes. Once it returned to "normal", the audio was about 5 seconds out of sync with the video. One of the Star Trek TOS remastered discs needed cleaning in order to play properly, and it hit at the 4 minute mark of the 2nd episode on the disc.
In my firsthand experience with a bunch of new BDs from Amazon, Fry's, BestBuy, and CircuitCity, and some new HD DVDs from Amazon, the HD DVDs seem to be much more sensitive to dust, debris, and/or manufacturing residue than BDs. Is that a HDM player issue? There is a line between obvious misuse, fingerprint smearing, and scratching of the discs vs. reasonable treatment of the discs.
JosephShaw 12-07-07, 07:37 PM PS3: zero problems
HD-A2: kinda slow, and gets confused when buttons are pushed more than once. I need to upgrade firmware to make sure it's just not caused by old firmware. Otherwise, performs solidly.
XBOX 360 add-on: audio sync issues.
CraigCooper 12-07-07, 09:10 PM I have had both the Panasonic BD10 and the Toshiba XA2. Neither of these machines have had any issues with disks or playability.
Personally I couldn't be more happier.
Flylow5 12-12-07, 06:15 PM I have had my A3 for 3 weeks. So far twice in the middle of two netflix scratched HD DVD's the system had continual missed frames/lockup/out of sink audio. My new HD DVD's have all played perfectly. Looks like something we will have to live with on HD DVD.
5 Problems
3 Toshiba HD-A2's, 1 XBox360 Drive+PowerDVD Ultra, 1 Samsung 1400, 1 Pioneer BR drive.
3 Combo HD-DVD defective discs (Superman, Breach, Good Shepard)
Samsung 1400-POTC-AWE menu problem (movie played though)
PowerDVD Ultra-Problems playing back Sunshine BD (Region B problem)
Baccusboy 12-12-07, 09:03 PM I answered no issues, but if we were to expand the poll to reflect difficulties with TVs and HD players, I would have to say 1 or 2.
I find that HDMI from my PS3 to my particular LG model 1080i Plasma has line-jumping issues on hot whites. I can't blame the PS3 though, because it seems to work fine on my lady's 1080i Samsung LCD (and worked fine on my previous LG LCD TV at 1080p).
I will purchase an HD-DVD player when I make it to Honolulu next January, and we'll see how the compatibility with HDMI is between that and my TV. It could be an HDMI handshaking issue. Hard to know.
Like many here, prior to a software upgrade my HDA1 would on occassion lock up. 1000 hrs later, no complaints. PS3 purrs along too.
Catfish 12-13-07, 03:36 PM If you had asked this question when I bought my unit (360AO) back in August, I would have said there was no end to the difficulty. Turns out my 360 was the culprit and not the AO. Since replacing the 360 it's handled everything I've thrown at it and I mean everything. Disks with documented playback problems, disks with scratches even disks with visible cracks (yes cracks) in them. Unfortunately the scarring I've incurred from my initial experiences with the unit is hard to shed and I still find myself crossing my fingers everytime I load up a disk.

Morpheo 12-13-07, 03:40 PM My A30 is working like a charm.
anotheraviator 12-14-07, 08:37 AM A2 and never had a problem except for a cryptic error message when trying to update firmware via CD. (figured out I had to burn at 8x instead of 52x and error went away)
iontyre 12-14-07, 09:53 AM A2, no problems of any kind. I have played HD DVD's, SD DVD's, DVD+R's, CD's, and CDRW. Not a single hiccup. Combos have not had a problem. Rental discs (4, including one combo, The Fountain) have played without error. Currently on FW 2.5, have not upgraded to 2.7 since everything works so well, why tempt fate? Will upgrade when it is needed.
Gordon Shumway 12-14-07, 09:59 AM Lot's of great reply's folks...thanks for the thorough info.
Seems it's neck and neck almost....assuming some folks with grudges weren't sabatoging things.
120 with issues of some kind
151 w/o
I do see though that daily it appears there are more "HD DVD" issue threads popping up every few hours...
Stevie76 12-14-07, 10:16 AM Never had ANY problems with my PS3 or HD-A2 :)
Had a maybe 2-3 problems with freezing with my old A1, but that was it.
No problems, unless of course you count not being able to go shopping without picking up a movie a problem.:D
AZHTGeek 12-14-07, 10:22 AM I picked 5 or more. In order of purchase. All firmwares up to date.
A1 = Has huge issue with netflix discs even today, and some combo problems early on that where fixed with disc cleanings and firmware upgrades.
BD-P1000 = Was rock solid until Java titles started rolling out. This unit is now in the bedroom and doesn't get used often but it still is a 50/50 shot if it locks up on POTC DMC or not during load. Haven't tried any of the new ones yet.
PS3 = I don't use this for movies but the 2 I have played on it a 8 months ago played fine. It is now a backup to the BD-P1400.
360 Addon = Used this for a backup to the A1 when we had issues with netflix. Never had an issue with it except for the early audio problems that were fixed.
HD-D2 = Never had an issue with this player. In the Game Room now so it doesn't get a lot of use though.
HD-A2 = Never had an issue with this player. Replaced my A1 and has been perfect with netflix and rock solid. In fact I know personally 4 people that have this model (soon to be 6, thanks walmart) and have never had an issue with it.
BD-P1400 = So far the only issues I have had with this player are the 5 min pause time out that will stop the disc. This doesn't work so well with advanced authored titles. A few video sync issues here and there and some skipping on a netflix title I watch last night. I haven't had this player for a month yet so time will tell how well it will stand up.
Lucien1964 12-14-07, 10:47 AM My friend and I both have A-2s. Mine has firmware 2.7 and his has 2.5. On 2 seperate copies of LIve Free Die Hard they freeze (sd-dvd) at the same spot. If you skip over that part in the movie it will play all the way through. If you let the players freeze at that part they will not recover and display a m665 (something like that). Thats the only issue I have with the player. Other than that its works great.
donricouga 12-14-07, 10:56 AM I've had my ps3 since December 2006. Zero issues with BD. Froze once when my brother played motorstorm! I've had my HD-A3 for almost 2 months now. 1 issue with Hot Fuzz freezing and audio drop.
hdtheater 12-14-07, 10:58 AM Mine was just a firmware upgrade needed to do TruHD on HD-A1. Some of you might not consider that a problem, but it should have been on the unit when I bought it.
chili555 12-17-07, 11:48 AM HD-A2 Wallyworld $98 special. No problems, unless of course you count not being able to go shopping without picking up a movie a problem.Exactly!!!
khwiggins2 12-17-07, 01:05 PM Mine was just a firmware upgrade needed to do TruHD on HD-A1. Some of you might not consider that a problem, but it should have been on the unit when I bought it.
Not to be snide, but how could it have been up-to-date? If you bought one that was manufactured before 2.0 was released, barring someone opening the box and performing the update, you're going to have older firmware.
TrueHD 2.0 is mandatory. They later released a firmware update to support the optional TrueHD 5.1. So technically it did support TrueHD, just not in 5.1 surround.
