I upgraded to the newer HR20 from the HR10-250. I wanted to make sure I was able to receive all the HD channels. However, I kept my 10-250.

You might want to hang on to the HR10-250 for use on a spare TV. Even if the other TV isn't hi-def, the 10-250 will store a LOT of standard def programs. That is what I did and I eventually upgraded the main TV so I wound up moving a high def TV into the bedroom to use with the 10-250

Although the HR20 is not a TIVO, Direct TV will only charge you the DVR fee for one unit (in other words they won't charge you $5 for the TIVO service and $5 for their branded DVR (HR20)). So you don't get hit twice if you do decide to keep the 10-250 and get a HR20.

If you upgrade, try to talk to customer retention if you have been a DTV customer for awhile. You should be able to score the HR20 for next to nothing.

One year later I have this same question: Where can I learn with the least fuss what D* HD channels or content I will be able to get into the HR10-250 I bought this week ... in case I subscribe to D* HD service next spring?

I don't know anything about MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 in relation to the 10-250 or to DirecTV programming.

Tivo is planning an MPEG-4 compatible tivo for D*. Might be shown at CES.

Go the DirecTV HD TiVo forum at www.tivocommunity.com (http://www.tivocommunity.com).

I don't know anything about MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 in relation to the 10-250 or to DirecTV programming.

By the first of March MPEG-2 HD Channels will be gone because the Lease for that space on that satellite will have expired and Directv has no intention of renewing it for the sake of MPEG-2 and those are the ones in the 70s Range of channels.

The only HD channels you will be able to get will be Local HD Channels via OTA if you have an OTA antenna.

Otherwise you will just be able to use it to view and record SD channels.

I will be SWAPPING out one of HR10-250s as soon as my Directv Installer gets the HR23-700 into his warehouse which should be within the next couple of weeks. Directv already has approved me for this SWAP but I told them to put it into my notes on my account because I would call back when my installer told me he had it in stock.
